Avatar f tn About five years ago, I was on a nasty cocktail of medications and gained 110 lbs in a few months. Not long after that, I began insisting my thyroid be tested. Finally, all this time later, I've found I have multiple thyroid nodules. I am pregnant, and waiting to hear my biopsy results to find out if we are doing a thyroidectomy now or post-delivery. At any rate, I've maintained that initial weight gain through two pregnancies.
Avatar f tn I gave in, figured I needed a psychiatrist, went that route, was not it,my eight went to a whopping 378 pounds with extreme rapid gain, I could not take it anymore, I decided to get Baritric surgery. Once again I was prepping for surgery and my thyroid test was bad, indicative of hyperthyroidism.I was informed to go to my PCP, I did, once again another doctor said no way I should be skinny therefore it is not right. I went ahead with the surgery and have since lost 110 pounds and am 20,000.
Avatar n tn I was also wondering if anyone that had total thyroid surgery has had the feeling of something stuck in throat after and food just not tasting the same. Not sure if it is from tt surgery or having my tonsils out at the same time. I just hope that I get this figured out since I am taking my son to a child endo in march since he is overweight and the drs are conserned since I have a thyroid issue and it runs in my family hope my son doesn't have any issues he is so young.
Avatar f tn I want it removed and spoke to the Endo specialist and she said there are many risk having this surgery, due to it being on or so close to my vocal cords and blood vessels and so fourth. Is it true that you really gain weight after having this surgery done and one will have to take hormone pills for the rest of their life? Please let me know....
Avatar f tn You need thyroid medication because you no longer have a thyroid, From what I understand you need the thyroid medication to help your body function without a thyroid. But don't quote me on that, you should ask your doctor to explain it more thoroughly to you.
Avatar f tn I did the same thing, I think I gained maybe that much, however, I was at 88 lbs before surgery. I hit 134 lbs after the TT. For me it took eating right, it did take about 3yrs or so to get back to normal weight. It took a year to get my dosage to where it needed to be. I do eat okay now. I eat a lot of protein, but I love meat. How long has it been since you had the surgery?
Avatar m tn Yes, I have heard of several women on this forum who have thyroid problems either before or after the surgery. How are you doing on the synthroid? It's important to keep on eye on all of your levels, not just TSH. Did they check that along with FT3, FT4, and antibodies? You really need these tests too and many Drs will only check TSH.
Avatar n tn I DON’T like being overweight either! All I could find was weight loss after surgery till I finally found this, but nothing about weight gain! Thnx everyone!
Avatar n tn I am a fitness instructor and even while eating well, and vigourous exercise I have been gaining weight. The only factor I can attribute this to would be my surgery. Could this be? Thanks for any help and insight. I might also add that I feel awesome otherwise! I have not had a single episode of SVT since my surgery.
1286779 tn?1400012806 Make sure that you are on thyroid replacement therapy of some kind from your doctor first, since inactive thyroid can cause many more serious medical problems than weight (high cholesterol, slow heartbeat, heart failure). Make sure your diet contains many basic foods (lowfat milk, fruits, vegetables, lean meats, enriched grains).
Avatar m tn Hi Everyone I have read on the net that most people are suffering from weight gain after Thyroid surgery. I had a hyperactive thyroid (due to toxic nodule) which made me loose around 33 pounds whithin a 3 month period. I had a subtotal Thyroidectomy on the 6 of Aug 2010 and I am still the exact weight that I was on the day of surgery. I would like to know how long does it take more or less for someone to expect weight gain after surgery?
Avatar f tn You have to have adequate thyroid hormone levels, from your thyroid gland and/or from thyroid med. Although weight gain can be related to a number of things, certainly one is low metabolism due to low thyroid levels. If you will post your thyroid related test results and reference ranges shown on your lab report, we can try to assess the adequacy of your testing and treatment. Also, what thyroid med are you taking and what dosage? What symptoms do you have other than weight gain?
1613542 tn?1366468543 Dr said swelling was normal because of infection was very bad. I got my drainage tube and staples removed today :). Also that some of the swelling could have been from my thyroid ( I have Hashimoto's disease) and that the surgery could have affected how well my meds absorbed. All is great now my swelling is down and I am back to normal weight. Soooo happy Thank you both.
Avatar n tn Not everyone gains weight after thyroid surgery. The key is to make sure your replacement thyroid hormone dosage is sufficient to keep your levels within normal limits. Make sure your doctor tests you within 6 weeks of any dosage change. I have struggled with weight all my life, except when I was hyperactive thyroid from Graves. I had a TT two years ago, and have been able to actually lose 10-15 pounds.
Avatar f tn t have the energy to workout like I used to even though I am trying. Can I still loose weight after my thyroid surgery like I am now which I hope I will it's better to loose than gain. I much prefer where I am right now at 125lbs than my normal weight 160lbs. Again thank you for you advice, also should my body go back to it's normal stage when my thyroid is removed.
Avatar f tn weight fluctuation, hair loss, mood swings, etc. It eventually stopped and I lived normally and happily throughout the rest of high school and even college. Now, years later, I am struggling with thyroid problems again. I've undergone more radioactive iodine 3 times in the last 2 months...then I had a biopsy done. Thankfully, it is not cancer. I am grateful for that completely, but still overwhelmed and frustrated because I have no clue as to why I am going through all of this again.
Avatar f tn Weight gain is common after hysterectomy. Of course, your thyroid could also be a culprit. And your symptoms of hair loss, foggy head, inattentiveness, and memory loss could be signs that your ovary is "sputtering out" as a result of the hysterectomy. Post-hysterectomy ovarian failure happens about 40% of the time (sounds like your OB may not know this or may not want to admit it).
Avatar n tn So Free T3 and Free T4 will give the best picture of your thyroid status. Due to the cause for your weight gain, you should be able to lose some of the weight by getting your Free T3 to the right level for you. After that it may be necessary to work on diet and exercise to get where you want to be. But making sure your Free T3/metabolism are right should be the first step.
Avatar n tn Has anyone lost weight after they were treated or had there thyroid removed?
Avatar f tn It is probably worth at least having an ultrasound to determine if there is any growth or new nodules since surgery. This may not be thyroid related.
Avatar n tn tall 120 pounds and 6 months after that I was diagnosed with Hyperthyroidism and graves disease, After months of treatment the doctors decided I would need surgery to correct the problem. After the surgery I gained 30 pounds in 2 months, and now 2 years later I am 165 pounds, I have modified my diet and tried to exercise as much as possible but its hard because of knee surgery a year ago. I've talked to several doctors and no one has helped.
542445 tn?1215132963 Hi Stella, I had total thyroidectomy after I found out I had thyroid cancer. My Thyroid hormones were normal, though. After the surgery, the high levels of levothyroxine (137mcg a day)I had to take made me hyperthyroid - I weigh 57 kg, so if you weigh the same maybe the hormone you're taking is making you sub-clinically hyperthyroid too. Even though my T4 is now balanced, I don't think artificial hormones are as effective as the natural ones.
Avatar m tn Hello! My girlfriend Emily has been having some problems that just worsened recently and thinks it might be her thyroid but isn't sure. For 9 months she has noticed a slight bump on her stomach area around the colon I think. She thought it was her Hernia...which she had when she was younger and had surgery. There was no pain. It may also be important to mention she's anemic.
