Avatar f tn Talk to doctor he said my metabolism has slowed due to the med, as well as low estrogen, Any advice? weight is at stand still even with exercise and moderate food intake, water.
Dinosaur You should talk to your doctor about getting some simple blood tests done to check your thyroid function. The thyroid controls metabolism, so if the thyroid becomes under active, it will be difficult to impossible to lose weight. Ask for the following tests: TSH, Free T3 and Free T4. Don't let them get by with just a TSH.
Avatar f tn Since you asked the question about weight on this Thyroid Forum, I have to ask if you have any reason to believe that thyroid is involved? Do you have any of the typical hypo symptoms shown in this link? http://endocrine-system.emedtv.com/hypothyroidism/hypothyroidism-symptoms-and-signs.html Have you ever been tested for the biologically active thyroid hormones, Free T3 and Free T4?
Avatar n tn The Doctor put my on Synthyroid to help me loose weight (my thyroid levels were in the safe range but were closer to the hyperthyroid range) When starting the thyroid meds, my mental clarity improved, and I felt like 1 million bucks, but I continued to gain weight at a rapid rate, even when the dose was increased. So he took me off the synthyroid completely, as he wasn't convinced that this was my problem.
Avatar f tn All I ever read is the key to weight loss is your metabolism. How do I increase it without a thyroid? It is very frustrating!
Avatar m tn My wife has a "condition" where she gains weight if she eats over about 900 calories in a day. The problem is she weighs about 260. She has lost some weight with healthy eating and exercise but still cannot go below a very low caloric intake. She had gastric bypass surgery and it helped her not be as hungry and she eats healthy and exercises regularly. She lost a little more recently to the weight she is at now, and has to stop eating at a little bit lower caloric amount.
Avatar n tn This is not an argument to use thyroid hormones to increase metabolism above normal to achieve weight loss. Our goal is to correct the hypothyroid response in a weight loss patient and return him/her to normal metabolism so that the patient feels normal and is better able to lose weight and maintain that loss.
Avatar m tn Abnormal body weight, either over or under is mostly controlled by a balance of what you eat and the metabolic rate or the body's metabolism (Speed) When your metabolism is fast, you burn off the fat, thus stay slim. If your metabolism is slow, you have a problem burning off fat and become overweight. Your Thyroid has much to do with the metabolism, in your case, your thyroid may be secreting too much hormone causing your body's metabolism to burn off the food you eat.
Avatar m tn I am confused, cause in hypo, we gain weight n have slow metabolism. But i have gud metabolism and i am not able to gain weight.
Avatar f tn Often, when one has a thyroid condition and a weight issue, together, thyroid hormones are not properly adjusted or there are other issues present, such as metabolic syndrome, insulin resistance, etc. I did see that you posted another question regarding pre-diabetes, which is also known as insulin resistance, which sometimes goes hand in hand with hypothyroidism. Typically, in these situations, weight loss clinics will not be your best bet, because any weight lost, will not be lasting.
Avatar n tn It is my understanding that the thyroid has a part in metabolism, and when we are hypo, our metabolism slows down, As you know from experience, it is hard to get it jumpstarted again. Even with dieting and exercise. I read that cayenne pepper upped the metabolism, I have been adding it to my food. Who knows, we get so desperate and want to lose that weight so bad, they could tell us to eat the stuff off our bumpers and we just might do it....ha ha ha Gross, I know, but you get my point!!
1289966 tn?1326101570 having a underactive thyroid ,ive gained a little weight ,i did put it down to giving up smoking 3 years earlier, but my doc says it is down to the thyroid problem, now that i have started on thyroxine and trying to exercise, will i lose the weight or will it always be there, what im trying to say is, as i lose it will my underactive thyroid make me gain it again just as soon as its gone
Avatar f tn Please post recent thyroid test results with reference ranges. Ranges vary lab to lab, so they have to come from your own lab report. Do you have other symptoms of hyper or hypo? What do you take for meds?
Avatar m tn Eating simple carbs like sugar, for example, alters metabolism. Eating more protein alters metabolism. Not eating alters metabolism. And the thyroid is intimately connected with the adrenal glands, which you will throw off and they also regulate metabolism. The connection between the thyroid and weight is not settled -- doctors believe there's little connection, while anyone who has had a thyroid problem will say it does.
Avatar f tn I started excercising, taking a multivitamin and doing weight watchers about 7 weeks ago and weight was flucuating between 2-3 pounds. I had my thyroid checked and my results are TSH .917 which are within the "normal range". MY TT4 is 9.9, TT3 is 153, fT4 1.34, fT3 3.5 however, my rT3 is 36.9. Which is high. I was diagnosed with poor conversion??? What does this mean? I was prescribed iodine, vitamin D 10,000iu daily and iron. My ferritin results were 50. What does that mean?
Avatar n tn Free T3 is the most active thyroid hormone, and largely regulates metabolism. If you are under medicated or incorrectly medicated, there is no way your metabolism will be at the level that is normal for you. I think you might like to read a previous post that I found to be so very interesting, because it is about the effect of thyroid on metabolism. by pickdaisies , Apr 18, 2009 05:27PM I was having some major problems with my metabolism.
Avatar n tn If you are slow you gain - High lose. Thyroid hormone controls metabolism so hense if your meds are not balanced your weight and energy to control the weight will change. Being a patient from Hyper storm to almost Hypo coma my weight has changed alot. Amougst other things. I find IBS and acid reflux an issue too. Low - IBS / High - acid. Hormones and metabolic rate changes in a monthly cycle even in non thyroid patients.
1436343 tn?1283875331 Have you had your thyroid checked? Hypothyroidism is a major cause of sudden spikes in weight. Your thyroid controls your metabolism and when it's not working right, your metabolism isn't working right either. I gained about 30 pounds in < 3 months when my thyroid quit working. Ask your doctor to test TSH, Free T3 and Free T4.
Avatar f tn One of the main symptoms of hypothyroidism is weight gain, because your thyroid controls your metabolism and when your thyroid no longer works properly, neither does your metabolism ... bingo, we've probably found the cause of your weight gain/inability to lose!! Welcome to the club. I'm assuming that you're on thyroid replacement hormones... is that correct? What med(s) and dosage(s) are you on and how long have you been on them?
Avatar f tn I have a inactive pituitary tumor or has been for a couple years. Thyroid test a month ago has me confussed. The TSH is 2.24 the HEM-WBC is 4.18 and T 4 is 4.9, should I be concerned? My immune system is in the normal range but on the low side. It was killing me so I now get vivaglobin 30ml, weekly. On my Dad's side of the family just about everyone has a low or thyroid (9 out of 10) a couple thyroid cancer.
Avatar f tn You have been so helpful and so generous with your knowledge. The main reason I picked this alternative/holistic doctor was her view on hypothyroidism/metabolism etc. She points out that the tests don't always show a poorly functioning thyroid and there are many tests to do (like you suggested) and also many ways to treat hypothyroidism...Her goal is to help her patients having "optimal functioning thyroids"...sounds like heaven to me. I will try to remain upbeat.
Avatar f tn s overall metabolism rate. If you have a low thyroid problem, your metabolism will be slowed and your body simply makes it difficult to impossible to burn calories. And thus weight gain. Which is why weight gain and inability to lose weight is such a common symptom of low thyroid!
Avatar f tn I just thought because thyroid affects metabolism, losing weight might boost my metabolism thus affecting thyroid levels. PLUS I was concerned only because I know thyroid will affect your periods etc..So I guess I figured since it affects your periods there must be some kind of connection between thyroid and estrogen and progesterone. I only lost 10lbs within 2 months..not too fast, etc.
Avatar f tn The thyroid maintains our metabolism. If your thyroid slows, your metabolism will slow and you will gain weight from the same food you've always eaten. Weight gain for no apparent reason is a sign of thyroid dysfunction.
Avatar f tn I am taking L-carnitine amino acid for weight loss and to speed my metabolism. How long before I see some results? Also, has anyone taken b-12 for weight loss? Does it help?
Avatar n tn If you have no thyroid can you still increase your metabolism by eating more often and excercising. etc.. I've tried looking online but can find no answers. I would think that my metabolism would pretty much be a constant because the Synthroid keeps it regulated. I gained so much weight right away after the thyroid removal that it's frustrating.
Avatar f tn s just save for me to remove it right now. Right now with the way my Thyroid is I am losing alot of weight I am way under weight right now which I feel really good about, and I have lost my appetite right now and my thyroid has really affected my body. That is why I am really anxious to get it out, it has affected my sleep my appetite like I said my body just doesn't feel right and I have never felt this bad.
