Avatar n tn May need to see a endocrinologist to have your thyroid checked. Symptoms of an under-active thyroid include unexplained weight gain, fatigue, slow heartbeat, constipation, dry skin and a low tolerance for cold. The stress of trying to keep up with hormone needs can cause your gland to swell and create a bump in your lower neck.
1756321 tn?1547095325 BMR = 66 + ( 6.23 x weight in pounds ) + ( 12.7 x height in inches ) - ( 6.8 x age in year ) So, a female weighing 130 lbs., 5 ft 4 inches, and 50 years old would have a BMR of about 1295, without any estimate of calories for physical activity. If that same lady was a hypo patient and about 10 - 15 % below where they would normally be, due to being hypothyroidism, then for a woman that would be approx. 195 calories less per day that they could consume without gaining weight.
Avatar n tn You might want to get your thyroid function tested to make sure it is just the lack of (I think) progesterone that is causing your weight gain and not hypothyroidism.
2059648 tn?1439766665 Some people just seem to gain weight whenever the thyroid if off in either direction, although weight gain is more often associated with hypo. I dropped 25 pounds after starting levo without doing anything differently. You just have to keep after your doctor to adjust meds until all symptoms are gone. I also have a heart arrhythmia, in my case a congenital heart defect that makes me prone to episodic tachycardia. Once again, both hypo and hyper can affect arrhythmias.
12182312 tn?1427683956 BMR = 66 + ( 6.23 x weight in pounds ) + ( 12.7 x height in inches ) - ( 6.8 x age in year ) .This formula suggests that for every pound gained, on average BMR goes up 4.35 calories per day. So, if for any reason your BMR dropped, say because of hypothyroidism, if nothing else changes, you will gain weight until the weight gain offsets the reduced BMR. So, say that you become hypothyroid and your BMR is actually 150 calories per day below the expected amount, for your weight, height and age.
Avatar m tn I am sure I gad Thyroid disease in my thirties also, I never had any symptoms other than a slightly elevated cholesterol level, but when I hit 58 things really started going down hill, I started out with insomnia and had to quit work because I could not sleep, and that made the fatigue worse, but everyone is different as far as symptoms go, some get most of them and others only a few, it seemed in my case, I had all of them hit me at once, it then took a year before I found an MD that diagnosed
Avatar f tn There is no thyroid specific diet, but several books give good general advice on weight issues. If the thyroid function is normal or slightly high (due to cancer history), there is not much to do from a medication adjustment standpoint.
Avatar f tn Omg my hubby has never been able to gain weight and since being pregnant he's gained 10 lbs, he's got a pregnancy brain (forgets everything), and always tired.
Avatar n tn No supplement is likely to help. Weight is a balance of calories in // calories out ---- this is true for thyroid and non-thyroid patients. Keeping the TSH in target range (ask your doctor about your target as it may be different based on the thyroid cancer history).
Avatar f tn I struggle with my weight as it is and i have heard that with a total thyroidectomy and going on synthroid weight gain is an almost certainty. Can anyone shed light on this..I am considering a partial and if its cancer having it done again. Good or bad decision?
317787 tn?1473358451 First off, her Free T4 is very low in the range, indicating that her thyroid is not producing adequate thyroid hormones. Rule of thumb is for Free T4 to be about mid range; your sister's Free T4 is only at 13% of its range, so it's quite understandable why she has symptoms of being hypo... Unfortunately, Total T3 is considered obsolete and isn't very useful, but it, too, is lower in the range than we'd recommend...
Avatar n tn If you have Graves Hyperthyroidism then medications like carbimazole are needed to slow the thyroid back to normal to avoid complications like heart failure and stroke -- weight loss is common with hyperthyroidism and many will regain some of the weight as the thyroid is normalized.
Business woman2 In all probability your thyroid control is not good. So, test for TSH, T3 and T4. Other than this, in females, polycystic ovary too can cause weight gain. Diabetes and insulin resistance should be tested for. Anemia can cause weight gain through water retention. Please consult your doctor regarding this. Take care! The medical advice given should not be considered a substitute for medical care provided by a doctor who can examine you.
1426120 tn?1283039272 Certain medications like antidepressants cause weight gain. Polycystic ovary too causes weight gain, hence has to be ruled out by an ultrasound of abdomen. If the above causes are eliminated then you can join a weight trainer and a nutrition expert and follow their advice and lose weight under their guidance. Hope this helps. It is difficult to comment beyond this at this stage. Please let me know if there is any thing else and do keep me posted. Take care!
199954 tn?1294944669 I assume you meant one tablet 5x/week (not day). There are some people with weight gain with thyroid replacement - but most weight gain is (unfortunately) lifestyle. It is important to make sure the TSH in target range -- which may be 0.2-0.5 depending on the risk of your thyroid cancer.
199954 tn?1294944669 If your levels are ok, there is not much more to do from a thyroid standpoint. It is important to remember that most people with weight problems and cravings do not have a thyroid problem -- so it is likely, in large part, unrelated.
Avatar f tn i cant loose weight i have thyroid and i have try so many things and its hard and i'm tired of trying everything and i have gone to the gym too... please help me what can i try?
Avatar n tn in january dis year i had intnse pain in my neck and doctor had given me sum medicines..after dose medicines...i have put on 10 kgs of weight also my periods whch used to b for 4-5 days have reduced to two days n am getting a lot of pimples too.plz suggest wat should i do ??
Avatar f tn Since you both have had thyroid tests and say they are "normal", I would love to know what the results are because some people can fall into the "normal" category on the lab report and still have hypothyroidism because some doctors (and labs) still use outdated reference ranges AND what's "normal" on the lab report, may NOT be normal for you -- your body may need different levels of thyroid hormones.
Avatar f tn I have been gaining weight over the past 8years. I cannot seem to lose weight no matter what I try.I have done all the diets only to lose 5lbs and gain10lbs..Extremely tired all the time. I am 5ft 175lbs and 54 years of age. I do not want to be on any prescription medicine. I just lost my baby sister to breast and brain cancer and she too was hypothyroid . Is there any other alternative?
Avatar f tn After first week of tx my doctor started my on thyroid meds (25 mg); now I am up to 50 mg. I will be finished with tx soon and want to continue taking the thyroid medicine. I have heard that once you take thyroid medicine you have to take it for the rest of your life. I heard that some people have experience post tx weight gain as well. This is my biggest concern that if they take me off of the thyroid meds that I will experience weight gain.
