400667 tn?1203744543 The thyroid gland regulates the body’s metabolism and has no effect on calcium levels while parathyroid glands regulate calcium levels and have no effect on metabolism." My daughter does have a large (9 CM) on her thyroid with some Nodules. I question why the Dr would speak of calcium deficiency if the thyroid has nothing to do with the production of it.
Avatar m tn There are four parathyroid glands behind the thyroid gland. Occasionally an extra parathyroid can be elsewhere in the neck. You can have a Sestamibi Technetium scan to see possible enlarged parathyroid glands or adenoma. The nature of the mass in the parotid salivary gland should be cleared up. A malignant tumor can also cause high calcium.
Avatar n tn The parathyroid glands are small endocrine glands in the neck that produce parathyroid hormone. Humans have four parathyroid glands, which are usually located behind the thyroid gland, and, in rare cases, within the thyroid gland or in the chest. Parathyroid glands control the amount of calcium in the blood and within the bones.
393685 tn?1425812522 They got their name because they sit behind or outside (para means outside) the thyroid gland. It is possible to remove the thyroid completely and not involve the parathryoids. They only come into the picture during a thyroid surgery when they get nicked or damaged during that surgery. I had one parathyroid gland go hyper and it had to be surgically removed. I also had my enlarged thyroid gland removed at the same time. Those were considered two separate surgeries, done at the same time.
679810 tn?1226460382 I have just been diagnosed by lab tests and a sestamibi scan to have a lower left parathyroid tumor. The scan also identifies my the left side of my thyroid gland as being significantly smaller than the right side. What are the ramifications, if any, of this observation? Thank you for your consideration.
Avatar n tn I agree with AR-10. There are two sides to the situation. Living without a thyroid vs. possible multiple surgeries in that area. My surgeon went with the later when I had parathyoid surgery. But I think my thyroid might have been in worse shape than yours. A second opinion doesn't sound like a bad idea.
89559 tn?1234880265 Sestamibi is a nuclear radiopharmaceutical (methoxy-isobutyl-isonitrile) which is bound to the radioactive isotope Tc99m. Tc99m-sestamibi is taken up by both the thyroid gland and the parathyroid gland, but can also be taken up by enlarged thymus or lymph nodes within the neck, and is also used in nuclear myocardial perfusion imaging and in detection of very early stage breast cancer.
Avatar n tn PTH is made by four small parathyroid glands located in the neck behind the thyroid gland. Hypoparathyroidism occurs when there is too little PTH. Blood calcium levels fall, and phosphorus levels rise. The most common cause of hypoparathyroidism is injury to the parathyroid glands during head and neck surgery. Rarely, hypoparathyroidism is a side effect of radioactive iodine treatment for hyperthyroidism.
Avatar m tn Yes I have a parotid mass in the deep lobe scheduled surgery for June 30 also had biopsy on parathyroid tumor get those results Tuesday. Very worried.
Avatar f tn I had a parathyroid gland removed in February after blood tests showed an elevated pth and calcium level. My calcium and pth returned to normal immediately. Last week, new blood tests showed a normal calcium level and an Intact PTH of 152.9 (14-72). The lab report says this indicates secondary hyperparathyroidism. My research shows this typicslly occurs when calcium levels are low. My level is normal. Other abnormal lab values: Creatinine 1.2 (.6-1.0) CGFR.
Avatar n tn Most of us have 4 parathyroid glands that reside directly behind the thyroid gland. The only relationship the parathyroids have with the thyroid is their location. If you have additional information regarding this parathyroid nodule, it would be helpful if you could provide it.
675329 tn?1297288378 he says this will cure this problem. do you mean another parathyroid gland has another adenoma on it. how will they know. can i have surgery to remove thyroid nodule if i need another surgery to remove parathyroid gland with adenoma on it.
Avatar n tn focal hyperechoic well circumscribed 10 mm nodule at posterior most aspect of left thyroid gland which appears to be extrinsic question parathyroid lesion. My doc says surgeon will decide if biopsy needed or not. Can anyone offer advice?
Avatar f tn The thyroid gland is very heterogeneous in echo texture which makes evaluation for nodules difficult. Right lobe: Size:5.2x1.5x1.8cm Nodules: The right lobe of the thryroid gland is very lobulated and very heterogeneous in echotexure. There is a hypoechoic mass in the midpole of the right lope measuring 5x4x4mm.A bright echo seen in the inferior pole measures 2mm in size. Left Lobe: Size 3.7x1.0x1.
Avatar f tn Most people have 4 parathyroids, located BEHIND each of the 4 corners of the butterfly shaped thyroid gland. The only relationship between the thyroid and the parathyroids is the location in the body. Kidney stones are a classic symptom of hyperparathyroidism, so with your high PTH and many kidney stones, your doctors certainly need to investigate further.
Avatar n tn HI, This is a great question..My surgeon did an ultrasound...however I think that was mainly to check the Thyroid. He said he could see something on the parathyroids, but then I was sent for the sestabami scan. I luckilly had only one gland affected,, initiallly he thought it might be two. . I believe the sestabami scan is what most doctors use.. not ultrasound alone.. The labs are how the diagnosis is made. but the scan can help pinpoint exactly which glands are involved..
Avatar n tn The thyroid nodules are small, the 0.7cm L area may be the overactive parathyroid gland. Would consult with an expert parathyroid surgeon -- check out parathyroid.com to learn some more.
Avatar n tn It is possible to have an extra parathyroid gland which can cause problems with calcium levels. My sister and nephew had a fifth parathyroid gland, however the problems they had are supposed to be family inherited and rare.
675329 tn?1297288378 i had this condition in 1991 which i had surgery to remove one parathyroid gland with adenoma on it. can this happen again. does my thyroid nodule have anything to do with this. i am taking vit d3 1000 mg daily for low vit d level which i started last fall. vit d level still low but higher than it was. thank you for any help you can all give me.
1611319 tn?1378618399 Parotid are saliva glands which are all around the mouth and under the tongue Parathyroid glands have nothing to do with the thyroid, regardless of the name, but sit ON the thyroid. Typically there are 4 of them on each corner of the thyroid.
Avatar n tn Asymmetric uptake inferior to the LEFT lower pole of the thyroid may represent parathyroid hyperplasia, less likely parathyroid adenoma." Like I said, since nothing "jumped" out at the docs (ENT) with all of these scans, they will not operate and almost refuse to believe the symtptoms I have (low energy, fatigue, mild acid reflux) correlate with the condition b/c they believe my Ca+ is at normal to high-normal levels. What would you recommend I do next?
Avatar f tn Left lobe measured 3.3cmX1.4cmX1.9cm. Isthmus is 5.9mm thin. Thyroid gland is heterogeneous. No dominant well defined solid or cystic mass can be demonstrated. Inferior to the lower pole of the left thyroid lobe is a 2.2cmX1.1cm solid nodule which could represent a parathyroid nodule. There is a small adjacent cyst about 8mm in size along the superior margin of the parathyroid nodule. TSH Level: 0.0 [0.35-5.50uU/ml] Thyroid Perox Results: Greater than 900 Free T3 Results: 6.3 [2.3-4.
Avatar m tn The parathyroids have no relationship to the thyroid gland, except for the location in the body. Throat pain when swallowing and the night sweats and the leg pain could indicate a thyroid condition. Where is the pain when he eats spicy foods? That could be a gall bladder issue. The tests he needs to check thyroid function are TSH, Free T3, Free T4 and thyroid antibodies, Thyroid Peroxidase Antibodies (TPOab) and Thyroglobulin Antibodies (TGab).
