Avatar n tn The GMC have agreed that Dr Skinner was not acting dangerously in initiating treatment with thyroid hormone replacement for those patients who had normal thyroid function tests but who suffered several symptoms and signs of hypothyroidism. They also agreed that for those patients who did not do well on levothyroxine-only therapy, the use of natural desiccated thyroid extract (i.e.
Avatar m tn I do think the quality of mental health services is dependent on what each state does and funding. In general, mental health is underfunded nationally. Our state does a pretty good job, to be honest. We have clinics and outreach services that the doctors involved are excellent. My professional life involved working with mental health professionals and organizations/associations/services and would put forward that care in my state/city did what it was supposed to do.
Avatar m tn I had my thyroid removed Nov 2002 due to a tumor. I have suffered with depression ever since it was removed. I am always tired and have a hard time to get the energy to do much. I have lost all motivation and ambition in life. I have been diagnosed with depression and take antidepressants that help some but I just have not been able to come out of it. My personal and professional life have suffered dearly.
Avatar f tn Depression sucks. I know the deep depression you are talking about. Remember it's your thyroid. I have Graves too and when my thyroid gets out of whack, I start getting really depressed. It's hard especially when you have no energy. That's why when I'm well and having a good time, I make a mental note to remember what a great time I'm having. It's definitely a roller coaster of emotions so I know I have to rely on logic so I don't get sucked into a black hole.
Avatar f tn The sad part was I was misdiagnsosed with depression for 6 months before I hit a thyroid storm. For six months I was treated for depression..(anti-depressants)..finally got over the anger of it all. Not once did they do a blood test....I was only diangosed by a fluke...

Avatar f tn Depression is listed as one possible outcome post surgery for thyroid disorders. is this because of the high possibility of hypothyroidism after surgery which will cause weight gain? I would like to know more about the long term effects of Graves and how to get things back to the way they were. My boyfriend has been diagnosed recently and is still trying to get the levels under control before he can have iodine treatment or surgery. He wants the surgery and to be done with this.
Avatar f tn I think once you find your med and the dosage, you are going tofind that you do not need the depression meds. Depression is a big player in Hypo and thyroid problems. Unless you have a family history of this? Not sure, or maybe just a family history of thyroid problems that were undiagnosed? Please hang in there and stay positive as hard as it might be. Feel free to contact me anytime.
Avatar n tn I had surgery for Thyroid Cancer in February 2008, thyroid removal, had treatment (radioactive pill), 8 months later had Body Scan and another pill and was found not to have any cancer. Will be checked next year. In the meantime I am so tired and depressed I do not know where to turn. I asked the Endo Dr. and was given the name of 3 psychiatrists. I am not crazy, just tired. My primary did a blood test all looked ok. I don't know where to turn.
Avatar n tn Wow -- I can't believe that his doctor would recommend waiting until the thyroid has "died off" to start treating the thyroid issue. Do you have a copy of his latest lab report? It would be great if you could post the tests run, along with their results and the lab's reference ranges, since different labs use different ranges. If you don't have a copy of the lab report, it would be a good idea to get one.
Avatar m tn You should be able to get the CMV results from your main doctor- I hope they give them to you in short order! Weight gain is typically what happens w/hypothyroidism, so I'm glad they are sending you to an endocrinologist.
Avatar f tn Are you currently on med? Your fatigue, depression and anxiety, could all be caused by your thyroid. You were under treated for a long time. I hope you can finally get the care you need.
Avatar n tn I’ve found Silver Hill Hospital’s website to be a useful source of information about treatments for Adolescent depression. They provide hope for people who may not have been getting the right care.
Avatar n tn I was in your situation for years being told I had clinical depression -- but thyroid was the root of my problem, not depression. Get copies of your test results and keep at it. Good luck.
Avatar f tn It is unusual and often dangerous for a patient with an underactive thyroid from autoimmune destruction (or surgical removal for that matter) to stop their thyroid medication for more than a few days to weeks. Once the diagnosis of low thyroid is correctly made, lifelong thyroid replacement is life-saving. It can be difficult to find the correct thyroid replacement medication and dose - but what is not questioned is the continued lifelong need for treatment.
Avatar n tn i quit my thyroid pills for 4 months and nothing changed so i told my doctor he took my test and it was good but he said it was because it was still in my system after 4 months What do you think
Avatar f tn Hi, I happened upon your post while doing a search for something on thyroid this morning and wanted to stop by and say hi. If you ever need any support for thyroid issues, we're always here for you on our thyroid community. As the above poster mentions, the change in environment and probably not your thyroid helped with your depression. However, I wanted to mention that maybe at your next Dr. appt ask to have your Vitamin D levels checked.
Avatar m tn Like, for example, with your fatigue and depression, have the tested your thyroid function? With your fatigue and memory problems, have they also done an iron panel and tested your vitamin B 12 level? Even though they might not suspect iron deficiency anemia because you are a guy, it can happen. Iron deficiency can also cause headaches, impaired coordination and depression (see private message).
Avatar f tn My question is whether having a very low free T4 is harmful when taking Cytomel? About a year ago I was started on Cytomel by my psychiatrist as an adjunct for resistant depression. I had my TSH tested in the past to screen for thryoid problems, but they had always been "normal" (lab range 0.27-4.20 mIU/mL, results = 2.61 in 2010 and 2.87 in 2013). The Cytomel worked really well for my depression and my energy increased.
