Avatar n tn Hello, my husband was diagnosed with papillary thyroid cancer at age 40. The thyroid gland was removed, and he was given radioactive treatment. He is currently on thyroid medication. Does this type of cancer come back in any other areas of the body ? What else can we do in terms of treatment ?
Avatar f tn If they removed your thyroid and gave you chemo, since thyroid cancer is about the most curable kind there is, I do not believe your symptoms come from that. Rather if you hit your head in the wreck or it got yanked around, you may have gotten a concussion, and that will cause your symptoms. With that said, you MUST visit either a neurologist or orthopedist ASAP to get a head scan... sometimes scans right after a head injury won't show much.
Avatar m tn So, the only gland in the body that uses iodine is your thyroid, if you have cancer of the thyroid tissue, RAI will be sucked up by only the remaining thyroid tissue and killed off, then they will give you a full body scan afterwards to make sure they did not miss any. I am currently about 5 days away from RAI 131 ablation, only when I get my body scan will I really relax and consider myself cured.
Avatar n tn I have read of less chance of you developing thyroid cancer. My TSH and T3 is normal but my left thyroid gland is now "cold" non functioning possible cancer. Good luck to you on your decision.
Avatar f tn My sister had two goiters and although she kept checking them frequently, lateley she was diagnosed with thyroid cancer. She was operated and had her thyroid removed and after 6 months she took the iodine radioactive pill. Now she is on thyroxin and her doctor told her that right now its important to keep her thyroid fast. My problem is that yesterday my sister had a panic attack . She felt like she was going to throw up and her heart beat was very fast.
Avatar n tn The RAI is to ablate any left over thyroid cells. Even with TT, they can't always get all tissue. Depending on your dose, you may be kept in isolation in hospital, or at home. Sometimes your taste buds are affected for a while, and possibly your saliva glands. If your doctor allows, you can use Thyrogen, instead of going hypo. You would go on a low iodine diet (LID) for two weeks prior to RAI.
Avatar m tn My 18 year old daughter just had her thyroid taken out due to the finding of fallicular pap. (sorry about the spelling)cancer. We are think about waiting until december to do the radioactive iodine treatment. Is that ok? From what we are told waiting as long as she is on the hormone pills will be ok.
Avatar n tn my mom needs to do radioactive iodine treatment and her numbers have to be up to 25 before they will do the treatment she is off all her thyroid medicines so her number should be going up but it goes from 7 to 13 back down to 9 why is this happening? Should we be concerned? This discussion is related to Wondering about TSH levels up and down...HELP.
1932310 tn?1323294316 It sounds like the initial surgery and radioactive iodine treatment for your thyroid cancer went well. Now the question is how much thyroid medication you need and what the target TSH level is. The current TSH of 0.01 is low, reflecting a high dose of thyroid medication. Often this is the goal in patients who have a history concerning for a more aggressive thyroid cancer. However, this can cause patients to feel tired and achy as you are feeling.
Avatar m tn She also needs to have her labs checked at least every 6 months to ensure she is on the correct dosage (she will be on a high dose to suppress any remaining thyroid tissue/cancer). Please make sure that on top of the regular thyroid labs that her endocrinologist checks her thyroglobulin (Tg) level - that's the cancer marker. As for the chances of it coming back. I can only tell you my personal experience.
Avatar n tn Have a 4cm mass on my thyroid that the FNA was inconclusive as to cancer or not. Endocrinologist thinks it is cancer and we have scheduled a complete thyroidectomy. My surgery is almost a month away -- seems like forever. Is this typical? Should I be pushing for a faster surgery? My endocrinologist said that thyroid cancer is slow growing and it shouldn't be a problem. Any feedback would be appreciated.
Avatar n tn is it possible that i could have some form of thyroid cancer AFTER radioactive iodine treatment? 3.and is the thyroid really completly destryed after this form of treatment? 4.should i have pictures taken of my thyroid area again?
Avatar n tn Is it best to have the RAI treatment after thyroid removed, with large lymph node, that all contained pappilary cancer, even if the thyroglobulin test is zero?
Avatar f tn It rarely needs radiation therapy or chemotherapy. What treatment you need depends on your age, the type of thyroid cancer you have, and the stage of your disease. Stage refers to how severe the disease is and how far, if at all, the cancer has spread.
Avatar n tn During a total thyroidectomy if thyroid tissue found in surrounding lymph nodes does that mean it's cancer? Also if a person has thyroid cancer, hurthle cell, what is considered late stages?
414800 tn?1205428010 Is the only way to rule out thyroid cancer through a scan? My bloodwork was as follows: thyroid peroxidase ab >1000 thyroglobulin ab >77.3 TSH 8.7 T3 1.2 T4 0.1 also WBC was 12.5 My Dr. diagnosed me with Hashimoto's thyroiditis causing hypothyroidism with multinodule goiter.
Avatar n tn Weight gain can be related to a number of different causes, including of course low metabolism due to low thyroid levels. If your thyroid levels (mainly Free T3), are too low, then that is what should be addressed first. You need to identify and address the cause(s) instead of considering appetite depressants.
Avatar f tn If you have a FNA biopsy and get an indeterminate result, you will have to remove the thyroid to get a diagnosis. Many times they cannot see cancer until the thyroid is out and examined by a pathologist. Barb is right, no problem living without a thyroid, but living with cancer is another story! The nodules will not go away, you will probably lose thyroid function eventually, as my doctor/brother told me, do it now when you are young and get it over with!
400195 tn?1253745062 It was encapsulated, no blood vessel invasion and no lymph node invasion. My endocronologist, who is herself a thyroid cancer survivor of 20 years, discouraged me from RAI treatment. She stated Mayo Clinic studies show recurrance rates in people 18 - 40 with carcinoma's under 1.5cm is 5% whether they had RAI or not. She felt the benefits of the RAI did not outweigh the risks for me. I also posted my question about RAI treatment to Dr.
Avatar m tn Relax PLeASe??? I know what you are going thru - it IS scary. ( I once had melanoma way back in 1988. I had a three year old to care for!! ) But now it's time to research as much as you can. Please, please PLEASE google ladybugsandbees. One woman's journey thru thyroid cancer. It is her blog and tells every step of the way what she experienced when finding out in 1999/2000. Her doctor found her nodule right after her check up after having a baby!!
Avatar n tn Surgery is currently the only tested treatment option to cure papillary thyroid cancer. Most people can be cured by surgical removal of the thyroid gland. Once the diagnosis of papillary thyroid cancer has been made by fine needle aspiration biopsy, surgery is indicated in order to remove the tumor. There are differing opinions among surgeons regarding the amount of thyroid tissue that should be removed from a patient with papillary thyroid cancer.
656157 tn?1224637803 (Unlike my experience). If it is cancer you will need to have the entire thyroid removed anyway for followup treatment. It sounds like the endo you saw today is more on the ball than the first one you saw. What were your feelings about him? Did he have a recommendation for a good surgeon who does a lot of these surgeries (you don't want a rookie for this one)? Please hang in there and keep us posted!
Avatar f tn That's a hard call to make on if taking it out is the correct measure. I am in a situation where I have a nodule on my ablated thyroid tissue. The nodule in description "could" carry cancer - but there is no solid proof it is either. I have know about this for 2 years. I go for ultra sounds to watch size. My situation is a bit different - but one says remove it - others say watch and see.
1181220 tn?1305120509 t treat thyroid cancer - even my oncologist (who works at the largest cancer treatment center in Utah) refers thyroid cancer patients to an endocrinologist. Do you have a good endocrinologist who specializes in thyroid conditions (most don't)? You really need more testing. If my endo saw my Tg level at 2.1 he's have me in the hospital immediately for another dose of I-131.
