Common Questions and Answers about Thyroid and vitiligo

Avatar m tn To have a second opinion we went to an another dermatologist he said it is not vitiligo and is 100 % curable this may be because of thyroid / liver problem and suggested LFT and thyroid tests. Now am totally confused what to do, what all tests (another than the mentioned above) should we do so as to know the actual cause. Is there any tests / specific symptoms for vitiligo ?
358699 tn?1297646442 My primary care physician did test my thyroid when I first met him when he noticed I had Vitiligo and I found out I have hypothyroidism. I am being treated for that but I've read that this autoimmune disorder may be caused by vitamin deficiencies and my doctor has never mentioned I should be tested.
Avatar f tn The pressure urticaria and vitiligo is what made me think thyroid. I had the rheumatoid factor and that was negative. That's when we discovered the low positive ANA. Thanks so much!! O and my mom has rheumatoid, fibro, lichen planus, and ulcerative colitis What type of test would you run for the symptoms I mentioned?
Avatar f tn I would agree with LazyMoose (Because he knows more than Me) , but I think it would be wise to see an Endo and get another run at all the tests to determine your situation, and if you have Hashimoto's your thyroid production decreases over time and medications need to be adjusted. Good Luck and Welcome to the forum.
Avatar f tn Vitiligo is 10 to 15 times more common in patients with other autoimmune diseases, such as Addison disease, diabetes mellitus, pernicious anemia, discoid lupus, and abnormal thyroid function. This disorder has only recently been identified as an autoimmune disease because organ-specific antibodies have now been detected in patients with vitiligo. The autoimmune reaction leads to destruction of pigment cells (melanocytes). Pigment cells are what give color or tint to the skin.
Avatar f tn m a 48 year old female and have developed flat brown splotchy hyperpigmentation on my face and arms. What is this? Is it hormonal? How do I get rid of it and prevent more? I also have areas of depigmentation (small white spots) all over my arms and legs. Again, what is it and can I get rid of it and prevent more? I'd appreciate any information about causes and potential treatment options. Thank you.
Avatar f tn This includes constant fatigue, inability to put on weight, thin skin, heat sensitivity, shortness of breath, muscle weakness, heart palpitations, eyes that water excessively, lump in throat, as well as premature graying of some pubic hair and a few eyelashes and vitiligo (only on one section of my body), both of which are linked with hyperthyroidism.
358699 tn?1297646442 I know research has been going on through the vitiligo foundation that they are closer to finding the connection between thyroid problems and vitiligo. They are leaning towards the thyroid causing the vitiligo. Wouldn't it be great they can fix that too?
697386 tn?1241026555 albinism of the ocular type, autoimmune polyendocrinopathy syndrome, congenital deafness with vitilego and achalasia, dyschromatosis symmetrica hereditaria, ermine phenotype, familial histiocyctic reticulosis, kabuki syndrome, and the syndrome of spastic paraparesis, vitiligo, premature graying and characteristic facies.
Avatar f tn I have both autoimmune thyroid Graves and Hashimoto along with Vitiligo however, my skin condition is very minimal and is definately a secondary issue. Commonly an autoimmune thyroid will have a cluster of three autoimmune diseases form. some patients don't see - or are not diag with others some can have more than three. Here's a good article to start some reading. http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.
Avatar n tn Both these diseases are associated with autoimmune diseases like thyroid diseases and hence need to be ruled out. Vitiligo is a pigmentation disorder in which melanocytes (the cells that make pigment) in the skin are destroyed. As a result, white patches appear on the skin in different parts of the body. Diagnosis can be confirmed by external examination, blood tests to check skin cell count for melanocytes and biopsy of the skin patches.
Avatar f tn Hi Cindy, I have the same type of discoloration (and am also fair-skinned). Redheadaussie is right, mine is vitiligo. Were you diagnosed with Hashimoto's or Grave's at any point? I have Hashimoto's, which is slowly killing my thyroid and making me progressively hypothyroid. Hashi's and Grave's are autoimmune disorders, and my endo told me when you have one autoimmune disorder, you're much more likely to have another, like vitiligo.
Avatar n tn I'm look for advice. I am a 24 yr old female with a history of Atypical migraines that started off with aura and classic symptoms of light and sound sensitivity, nausea, irritability and has progressed over the last 3 years to mood changes - euphoria, depression and about 6 episodes of seizures. Since the seizures I've been left with muscle twitches in my eyelid, but mostly in my legs, gluteals included, sometimes actual muscle jerks than can move the limb.
Avatar f tn The thought just occured to me, does having grave's disease mean I should be on the look-out for other diseases that may be more likely to strike graves patients? I have severe asthma, and was once diagnosed with arthritis, and fibromyalgia (I didn't have it.. The thyroid meds fixed my fibro symptoms!) Could my other glands be more likely to be disordered? Or am I more likely to get thyroid cancer, or arthritis or other autoimmune disorders?
Avatar f tn I found this article "One patient's UC success story" (google for the whole article) but this guy was about to have his colon removed his symptoms were that severe! Now he is free of symptoms on SCD (specific Carbohydrate Diet) and LDN (Low Dose Naltrexone). I've seen these results on other blogs, videos etc. I thought i had IC for two years but found out it was due to severe magnesium deficiency! Graves' disease and Ulcerative Colitis are both autoimmune diseases.
Avatar n tn These can be due to autoimmune disorder (affection adrenal gland and thyroid), viral infection, neurological problem or due to genetics. Other possibilities of a similar white patch are tinea versicolor (fungal infection), idiopathic guttate hypomelanosis (usually related to sun exposure) and progressive macular hypomelanosis. If it is vitiligo then treatment is by sun blocks, PUVA (combination of Psoralen and Ultraviolet A light) and immunomodulators.
Avatar f tn s thyroiditis, vitiligo, and alopecia areta. My white spots (vitiligo) are still the same size. I get even more white spots if I stop taking vitamin B12 (not enough B12 is another cause of white spots on the skin). The top three most common low or deficient states found with Hashimoto's thyroiditis is vitamin D, iron, and vitamin B12. One of the causes of an elevated RBC count is dehydration. This is of note since hypothyroidism is a cause of dehydration.
Avatar n tn These can be due to autoimmune disorder (affection adrenal gland and thyroid), viral infection, neurological problem or due to genetics. Since your son and daughter too have it, it is probably genetic in origin or has an autoimmune component. Other possibilities of a similar white patch are tinea versicolor (fungal infection), idiopathic guttate hypomelanosis (usually related to sun exposure) and progressive macular hypomelanosis.
Avatar f tn Since you are pregnant, your body is experiencing a flux in many hormones, and your need for thyroid meds. will change over the course of the pregnancy. So if you have Hashimoto's your need for thyroid meds may go up, until the thyroid is rendered useless. Hopefully you have an OB/GYN doc who understands the cause of your hypothyroidism and can help you navigate thru term. When my thyroid medicine is not at a high enough dose, I get acne like I am a teenager again. lol.
Avatar m tn I also suffer from some symptoms of vitiligo, asthma and some symptoms of poor thyroid function. For years I was on Prevacid (a proton pump inhibitor to reduce stomach acid). That was before I knew that for most people, GERD is caused by low stomach acid, not high acid. As a direct result, I began to suffer debilitating symptoms of B12 deficiency - one of the most difficult vitamins to absorb unless your digestion is near perfect. I ended up needing injections until BreatheB12 came along.
648155 tn?1238197357 Recently, officially diagnosed as vitiligo, I was given Vanos cream for the itching and xyzol (antihisthamine) also for the itching. I have been loosing my hair stedily for the past several (maybe 5ish ) months. I have an 18 month old son, whom I am still breastfeeding. I also have severe(and have had for many many years) Male-ish facial hair growth...some pigmented dark, some which lack pigment , but are still course. I am not overweight.
Avatar m tn s progressive in that it continually attacks the thyroid. As it attacks and destroys thyroid tissue, the thyroid will produce less and less hormones. Eventually, it will produce nothing and you will become permanently hypothyroid and will need replacement thyroid hormones, since you can not live without them.
