This morning I awoke with pain and clicking in my right thumb. Additionally, there is swelling in the thumb and a soreness into the heel of my hand (where thumb connects to hand). I am taking meds for migraine/stroke (Plavix, verapamil, lasix, lisinopril, along with thyroid replacement therapy and some allergy prescriptions.
I am a total klutz and ran my thumb into a wall, really hard, and felt a pop. My thumb then went numb, started to swell, and then began to tingle. About an hour later, it felt like someone had taken a sledge hammer to my thumb joint... I took some ibuprofen and put ice on it off and on, just like I would with any other injury that swelled up.
My hand was stuck in my coat pocket and when I fell I landed on it, palm side up. I now have pain on the palm side of my hand near my thumb. I can move my thumb using my other hand, but I can't stretch it out all the way from the rest of my fingers on its own. I don't have alot of swelling or discoloration. I does hurt more when its not elevated, and my hand feels a bit weak. Do I need xrays, or should I just ice it and wait a few days since there is no swelling?
A localized bruising, swelling and pain in thumb can be due to infection, bleeding blood vessels, injury, rheumatoid arthritis, bursitis or inflammation of the lining of joints, arthritis or due to tendonitis. You need non steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, along with something to bring down the swelling. An X-ray may not reveal anything if there is no fracture. You may need blood tests and MRI. You need to consult a rheumatologist. Take care!
My daugher got hit this past summer in the hand, in the area fatty between her thumb and pointer finger. It was swelled and very stiff. Our family Dr. said said it was just inflammed. Ever since that area gets sore and will swell up when she is hitting. I was told that there is a thumb brace guard that she could wear WHILE she is batting, to protect her thumb area. Where would I find something like this? I have checked online and can't find anything.
TMy thumb got tangled in my 100 lb. bulldogs collar while trying to get him off of my son's dog. When I FINALLY got them seperated I had the worst pain in my thumb and around the base of the thumb. It immediately started swelling. I could move it some, it was just very painful. I thought it would be back to normal next morning if I iced it before bed. Had very painful night and swelling had spread from thumb and base to whole top of my hand and fingers below knuckles, also palm of hand.
Sorry folks, I messed up the question! First part should read: I fell and sprained my thumb. The thumb swelled up and IP joint was painful for 3 weeks, it is 6 weeks now and pain is much much better but the swelling hasn't gone down. What concerns s me most is the IP joint (on the nail side) is swollen and hard like bone! The rest of the thumb is swollen but soft.

Some common symptoms of sprained wrist are;Pain with movement of the wrist ,swelling around the wrist joint, bruising or discoloration of the skin, burning or tingling sensations around the wrist .The treatment include;Rest, stop activity and don't use the injured wrist for 48 hours or until the pain and swelling has subsided. .
It has been about 2 weeks now since my wrist started hurting. The pain is on the thumb side of the wrist. It don't think it is a fracture because there is no swelling or discoloration.
But it sure hurts a lot.
When I wake up it hurts a lot - even for the slightest moment and then the range of motion improves as the day progresses. I am not sure if it is a a ligament tear.

What other symptoms are present? Arthritis may present with symptoms such as joint pain, swelling, inflammation, and stiffness. To confirm this diagnosis, imaging studies such as x-ray or blood tests may need to be done. Aside from arthritis, musculoskeletal issues may also need to be ruled out. If it persists, it is best that you have this checked by your doctor for proper evaluation. Take care and do keep us posted.
pain and swelling is to be expected. The pain will be alot worse if swelling is not tended to. Swelling will also cause numbness at times
Elevate hand above heart level off and on thru the day. EX: sit on a couch and prob hand on backrest. Remember"above heart level" That simple!
Pain in other parts of the body, in your case shoulder, neck,elbow etc is often caused by the odd way we hold our arm when in pain.

I am 27 and otherwise healthy. I have had soreness in my left thumb, and my Doctor said it was carpal tunnel. Suddenly it became so painful i could not move it, and the er doc. said it's dequervain's tendonitis. I have redness, swelling, and slight bruising, but no pain in my wrist. ( also there was no injury ) I have been wearing a splint and taking nsaid's for 3 days now with no improvement. Does anyone know what is wrong with my thumb?
I accidentally bump my hand into my husband very hard as we crossed paths, and I heard the joint of my thumb crack. It really hurt. The pain didn't subside and now three days later, the pain has extended to the underside of my arm. The joint and base hurt the most though. Could this be a sprain or a fracture? I don't notice a swelling but it hurts a lot. I do the cleaning and taking care of my 1 year old, but not without grunting and whining.
They did an ultrasound and found no clots. She has always has swelling and extreme pain in the right wrist as well as the arm and shoulder. Do you think the Chiari is causing the swelling or could it be the bulding discs causing her pain and swelling? She also suffers from such severe leg and hip pain as well as severe headaches. It also aches on the opposite side of my hand. I am able to use my hand and wrist to do most things. My hand is still slightly swelling at night and I wake up with a stiff hand. I am noticing the most pain when my hand and wrist are at rest. Could I still have a fracture somewhere and not know it.
It swelled and bruised immediately at the base of her thumb and on the pad of her thumb by the inside wrist. Also, pain and swelling on the outside down low between thumb and pointer finger. It hurts to use it but she can pinch her finger and thumb together in a circle. We iced it last night and saw an orthopedic doctor today. The swelling has come down a bit. She xray-d it and said that she either broke it through the growth plate at the base of the thumb or sprained it.
Symptoms begin with either numbness and tingling of the first three or two fingers from the thumb side or by just pain. Usually there is no swelling. Treatment is usually by splints and steroid injections. Surgery may be required in some cases.
It could also be rheumatoid arthritis, gout or tendonitis. However all these would also cause some inflammation and swelling. Please consult an orthopedic specialist.

Consider your activity modifications with your hands and wearing a splint to decrease the pain and swelling. Take intermittent non steroidal anti inflammatory drugs to decrease the inflammation.
Apply ice packs on the swelling.
Discuss with your surgeon and consider taking a steroid injection before your surgery if required.

d torn a ligament in the thumb and provided me with a splint. The splint exacerbated the swelling and the pain was consistent while wearing the splint. I ended up going back the the clinic where a different OT saw and informed me the splint was moulded to the incorrect position, and reshaped it accordingly. New splint, same issues but now over two months since the injury. It again was remoulded and although it was slighlty better, the swelling and pain only was relieved once it was off.
I have the sensation that from my wrist to my thumbnail the top of the hand is asleep, but I did feel some twinges of pain in that joint last night. Now today it is very noticeable. The doctor said that I had arthritis and it was there before. (I don't and it wasn't) He left to get the x-ray and the MRI. The end of my thumb was missing in every image. I left without any answers and don't follow up until second week of September.
i can still move my fingers except my thumb but there is very little swelling but severe pain. when i try to move my thumb or wrist pain shoots through my arm up to my shoulder and brings tears to my eyes now i have a very high pain tolerance as i have had stitches with no anesthetic so this pain is BAAAD. can it be broken and i dont know it? what do i need to do?
Index finger on right hand swollen and painful to bend.. Hard to tell if pain is first or second knuckle.. Swelling is mostly at base of finger.. No warmth or redness noted.. Have "skiers" thumb for about a month now.. Just woke up and boom thumb was swollen at base.. Finger was little stuff and next morning swollen and painful.. As long as it's straight there is no pain.. Getting old is for the birds!!
