thumb pain treatment

It's been about 10wks, had therapy and there has been no improvement at all in my thumb, still can not get it to bend on it's own. Orthopedic wants to give it 3 more wks and is considering sugery. EMG showed median nerve damage and anterior nerve damage as well. What are your thoughts on having surgery. It's become quite a problem for me to grab large things or grasp a ball too without having that thumb to bend.

The scar on the inside of my arm is adhearing to the muscle and tendon that control my thumb and when fully extended the scar is pulled toward the hand to the point that pain can be felt similar to pulling off a hangnail under the scar. It also move significantly when the thumb is bent as if trying to touch the palm. I have a piece of plastic from my pt that I was instructed to use to massage the scar and surrounding skin around to loosen the adhesion.

The pain radiates into my elbow area and even seems to be triggered by certain positions. This morning I awoke with pain and clicking in my right thumb. Additionally, there is swelling in the thumb and a soreness into the heel of my hand (where thumb connects to hand). I am taking meds for migraine/stroke (Plavix, verapamil, lasix, lisinopril, along with thyroid replacement therapy and some allergy prescriptions.

Inability to bend the thumb can be due to flexor tendon injury. It can cause pain on the palm side of thumb base. Treatment usually involves ice packs, splinting, pain medications and rest to thumb. Very helpful thank you, I did go see a doctor and shes 99% sure it's tendonitis and this is just the first time it has ever become inflamed. She has has sent me for X-rays I will be getting tomorrow and she wants me to see a physiotherapist. She wont tell me 100% till she runs more tests but between the ice and heat sand of course the Tylenol the pain is gone but now I'm feeling pain in my left thumb.

I have done the carpel tunnel wrist test positions that my general prac taught me when I was having neuropathy and urgent care tried to say it wa carpel tunnel. Anyways long story short, no pain when I do this position. Only pain when pressure is applied. I did nothing to injury it and I'm right handed so I'm unsure what to think of it. The only thing that is different is that i have been sick with a flu bug that turned into a cold. I don't have a fever anymore just congestion.

My thumb is not bruised or swollen but I have shooting pain when I bend it. I can bend it all the way but it shoots pain and it hurts in between the two joints. I have tried icing and wrapping it but nothing has helped and it has been nine days. My hand is also very cold but like I said before it is not bruised or swollen.

I've had steadily worsening osteoarthritis in both thumb joints for that past two years. My rheumatologist can offer nothing other than steroid injections, but I've had those in other joints in the past and at least half the time I end up with worse pain and swelling as a result. I can't take any NSAID's due to cirrhosis. What I'm wondering is if I can wait it out will the joints eventually fuse themselves and stop hurting so much, or will I have to have surgery for that?

m still experiencing symptoms - mainly muscle stiffness and pain. There was about 50% improvement since I began the treatment (that was a year ago) and i'm still experiencing a slight improvement every month or so. According to what I learnt - I know that's the ideal levels are very individual but that the guidelines are about 50% FT4 and 75% FT3. What should I do? Find a doctor who will subscribe me cytomel in addition to the eltroxin and aim for the 75% of the range?

t work so well for the bone on bone pain in the thumb joint and works so well for the same bone on bone pain in the knee!!! Hope i hear from someone/anyone who's gotten relief in this area.

s nails got weak and shredded when she was on Herceptin for breast cancer. Even one year after treatment, they have not come back to her pre treatment levels. I know some people drink gelatin (that stuff they use to thicken things - I think it comes in an orange package) to strengthen nails. I know a lot of folks have problems with teeth on tx and I have read some article about treatment and decreasing bone density but don't think I can put my hands on it.

Nearly 12 weeks post trigger thumb/carpal tunnel surgery on primary hand, the thumb joint is enlarged and hand still feels tight. Pain in the region of the surgery and thumb when hand is utilized in a normal/usual pattern. Palm has some discoloration and remains tender. What would you recommend? Would an orthopedic physician be of any assistance? Thank you.

I used to have a lot of pain in my large thumb knucke and wrist area. I thought maybe it was carpal tunnel, but was tested and the nerve is fine. I could not even cup my hand to hold water to wash my face. If I bumped it the pain was unbareable. You may not believe this, but I bought this band call Q-ray and within 24 hours the pain subsided so much that I hardly notice it at all. This was over 5 years ago and I am still relatively pain free. Mind over matter....

for about a month now my rights thumb has been very cold all the time it never warms up,, on a part of my thumb where they hand meets it is very painful??? please tell me whats wrong??

I have been having pain in my right thumb for the last 2 years. The only way I can describe it is a constant soreness. I have been to numerous doctors including neurologists, orthopedists and hand surgeons. Tests done include 2 nerve conductions, nerve block, mri on thumb, wrist and spinal cord, x-ray on hand and a ultrasound. None of them have been able to diagnose what the problem is. Is there anything else that could be causing this pain?

I had horrible pain in my bottom knuckle on my thumb, and now the knuckles in my middle and ring finger are hurting. I'm sorry for such a long post, but I'm really hoping someone might have some advice. I'm a single mother and I don't have insurance so I can't afford to go to a doctor. It hurts to bend my thumb sometimes too. Sometimes my wrist hurts but recently its been more in my thumb. I was wondering if this was carpal tunnel or if any one had any other ideas? Also I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions on what I should do about it? Thank you so much!

t swelling anymore. I still have pain in my hand, on the top of my hand (mostly between my thumb and pointer finger) and under my thumb on the side of my wrist and hand. It also aches on the opposite side of my hand. I am able to use my hand and wrist to do most things. My hand is still slightly swelling at night and I wake up with a stiff hand. I am noticing the most pain when my hand and wrist are at rest. Could I still have a fracture somewhere and not know it.

small bump has arrisen on the area of the wrist where the thumb and wrist attach. painful to use thumb. can move thumb with other hand no pain. skin in this area also sentitive to touch. hard to grasp anything with right hand. I wear a small brace on this hand during day hours to be able to do my job.

How many of you are gamers? Excessive pressing the thumb against a joystick can cause pain in the thumb and seeing as the left thumb is used most for gaming it's a no brainer.

The portion of my thumb that is below the pad (below the first crease marking the joint) is normal, as is the rest of my hand, fingers, and the rest of palm. It is only the .......... the thumb that is affected. There is no pain or trouble moving my hand or thumb, only an odd sensation and loss of feeling (although not a complete loss of feeling).

I have developed a trigger finger and dequervains tendonitis in bilateral wrist w/thumb pain. Had to go off med for a month and also have sites injected w/cortisone. Never had any of this before. Oncologist said she had seen trigger finger before no dequervains tendonitis? Wondering if anyone out there has had any of these side effects? And what do you think of this? I am miserable w/all this discomfort.
