Thumb pain playing guitar

Common Questions and Answers about Thumb pain playing guitar

finger

Avatar m tn It's probably a pinched nerve in your thumb, should go away on its own, I am guessing a week or so if you don't use it again. If it does return you could have a sensitive nerve there (I've gotten them on the side of my thumb from barely hitting something). Were you my brother I'd recommend you not stop playing, but stop that maneuver that puts pressure on the thumb until you can do it pain free.
Avatar m tn My doctor prescribed anti-inflammatory drugs to take in order take care of my tendinitis from guitar playing. Unfortunately, I'm not sure if my additional gastrointestinal problems would permit the use of them since they are known for having negative effects on the digestive system. So, my question is, can anyone suggest any alternative therapies? Should I keep it in a sling and avoid my guitar for a month or two?
Avatar m tn Symptoms begin with either numbness and tingling of the first three or two fingers from the thumb side or by just pain. Usually there is no swelling. Treatment is usually by splints and steroid injections. Surgery may be required in some cases. It could also be rheumatoid arthritis, gout or tendonitis. However all these would also cause some inflammation and swelling. Please consult an orthopedic specialist. Hope this helps. Please let me know if there is any thing else and do keep me posted.
Avatar n tn I'm not sure pinched nerves are caused by guitar playing. I've also been playing guitar for about that long, but I have no pinched nerves from it. I am, however, wracked with pain from other things, and if you do have pinched nerves it's likely the posture we assume when we play the guitar, with too much neck bending.
Avatar m tn I started to notice when I straighten my right elbow, fingers out, and twist so the palm is up, I feel pretty bad pain in the inside (thumb side) of the wrist. (the same pain happens when I just pinch the thumb and fingers and straighten) I also noticed if i massage the base of my bicep near the elbow, I can send a shooting feeling up to that same pain location. I had no numbness in any of my fingers, but the pain was getting worse, so I took it to an orthopedic specialist.
Avatar m tn ) and I am just curious as to what this weird bump on my hand near my thumb is too when I stretch out my thumb, anyways here is a link to pics of my hands any help would be greatly appreciated thank you. http://s1189.photobucket.
Avatar m tn I'm a musician. I play guitar and cello. Now, I've played guitar long enough where I over time developed calluses on my finger tips. However, now for cello I need a callus on the side of my thumb for a certain technique but I don't have time to develop it for weeks or months. If I regularly cut away at my thumb with a razor or something will a callus still build by means of artificial friction ?
Avatar m tn Although some hand and arm pain can be due to problems in the cervical area, because you have been playing guitar for a long time, this is likely to be what is referred to as repetitive strain injury. If you also have a job that requires a lot of repetitive use of your hands and arms, this will also add to your problem.
15711361 tn?1442435208 I am a guitar player and the last month month or two when playing my guitars, especially those with highly resonate bodies, I start sweating, coughing sometimes and experiencing heart palpitations. I've had thyroid issues for years but blood test shows levels are normal. I've also had a sporadic palpitation episodes for years but never anything like this. My regular doctor said the erratic heartbeats are pac's - he just doesn't know why they are happening.
Avatar n tn After playing guitar flash (a similar game to guitar hero), 3 minutes of gameplay I look at the walls and everything I saw showers of particles ( or noise) falling, is this normal? The effect last 5 minutes. I was totally panicked I thought I was having retinal detachment. Now everytime I play this game I see these things.
Avatar m tn As I was typing on my computer I noticed that my right thumb was shaking and it got me worried. It only shakes if I bend it at a 90degree angle but it is still very worrisome. About 3 hours ago I did scrub the bathtub and I thought that might have something to do with it but it has not stopped shaking in 3 hours.
Avatar m tn However, I am unable to comfortably use a guitar pick when playing guitar. What is going on? Should I see a medical doctor?
738075 tn?1330575844 I played between sets last Saturday night after practicing my 3 songs during the day a couple of times.Well, I played like s#!t! My fingers just weren't keeping up with my brain, and I was making just one R hand mistake after another. Spastic, fatigued, numbed. I learned when I was a little kid to keep the tempo the same, even through mistakes, and many people won't even notice. But _I_ noticed! I hate this feeling of loosing my guitar ability.
Avatar m tn hello, this is a strange instance, at least for me, i had an exposure maybe someone that's more experienced in the medical field would call it something else. i play music occasionally with friends in public, yesterday i didn't have my guitar with me so i needed to borrow from a friend that i didn't know much about. i went to her studio and we decided to jam together a little bit, i played her guitar during the entire time.
Avatar n tn Jay, I had a shot in my thumb (guitar player) a few years ago and it worked for many months. Is this the chronic pain problem you have had before?
1271506 tn?1271041933 About a year ago I was playing baseball and swung the bat and felt like i pulled something in my wrist and now, a year later, i tried swinging today in the batting cages and felt like i tore something again, and i cant bend my thumb down without so much pain. Any idea whats wrong with it?
Avatar m tn I have 3 herniated discs one which causes nerve pain - This became much worse after a car accident but it started before that I have osteoarthritis - This is directly linked to guitar playing and the fingers I use most are the ones that are most visibly affected. I also get this kind of pain with doing anything too much with a specific finger, say using my pointer finger to control my laptop mouse pad.
Avatar n tn Of late, I have noticed mild pain in my right hand and wrist especially when on the computer. The pain is more neuralgic type and not necessarily bone or muscle pain. I feel it is also finger specific, especially all my fingers other than my thumb and pinkie all of which I use to move the cursor. I am afraid I may have carpal tunnel. Please do suggest what to do now.
903476 tn?1242237037 Very helpful thank you, I did go see a doctor and shes 99% sure it's tendonitis and this is just the first time it has ever become inflamed. She has has sent me for X-rays I will be getting tomorrow and she wants me to see a physiotherapist. She wont tell me 100% till she runs more tests but between the ice and heat sand of course the Tylenol the pain is gone but now I'm feeling pain in my left thumb.
738075 tn?1330575844 s kind of a pain, and more than a little embarrassing to be playing some good, complex fingerstyle guitar, and suddenly your left hand just decides not to work. It's kind of like the mule in the pack string that sits down, suddenly, and messes up the whole train. I have a guitar group that I meet with on a monthly basis.
736040 tn?1257436457 it sounds like Carpal Tunnel Syndrome to me. Do the pops feel like someone pulled and let go of a guitar string? not sure if that makes sense but I get that sensation. Also, if you tap on the inside of your srist, almost the heel of your hand (by the palm) and pain shoots into your middle finger & first finger & thumb, there is a good chance that it's CTS. that is a test they do for CTS.
Avatar n tn it sounds like callus buildup. when i first started playing guitar my fingers would get extra skin that peeled, and after being around other musicians, i was told the fingers build calluses because of the strings, which explained why when i first started playing, my fingers were really sore, but once i got calluses, the strings didnt hurt my fingers anymore. i did end up with really thick calluses on my fingertips, but i loved playing guitar, so i didnt mind.
683664 tn?1330966324 Yep that was Diana Ross in 1980 with the band members from the band Chic ("Dance, Dance, Dance (Yowsah, Yowsah, Yowsah)" (1977), "Everybody Dance" (1977), "Le Freak" (1978), "I Want Your Love" (1978), "Good Times" (1979)) writing, playing and producing that great dance hit. Nile Rogers the guitarist of Chic also produced "Like a Virgin" for Madonna.
959691 tn?1259410214 My nerves seem to be going crazy too. My right middle finger twitches sometimes then it takes several days off from twitching. Then my left arm (on the in side near my eldow) begain to twitch also. sometimes I think it's from playing the basss guitar because a play so hard I get blood blisters on my right index and my twicthing finger quite often. I get restless and some anxiety at night.
