Common Questions and Answers about Thumb pain and weakness

Avatar f tn I've had both thumb weakness that comes and goes for a few years. It really got bad after pouring a bottle of wine, where my thumb went weak, numb and tingled and i almost dropped the bottle. i've never had pain per se, it's just uncomfortable, just like when your arm goes asleep. i saw an ortho doc who got an emg which showed bilateral carpal tunnel. he even got a cervical spine MRI b/c it seemed to occur in both hands at the same time.
Avatar f tn Gee, it is hard to know. Of course it can easily be the MS. It could also be a pinched nerve. The reason I know this is because my husband has a pinched nerve in his neck and often he complains of the same thingl I would ask my neuro. Then make a decision.
Avatar m tn Thanks for the reply. I haven't noticed any pain or weakness in lower extremities. Pain has been moving around, has improved greatly, sometimes absent, but when present is always either in upper/center of back, right shoulder, right arm pit, or right arm (or all of the above). Index finger and thumb are constantly numb, some times worse than others. I type a lot (computer repair), and that seems to aggravate it. Could it possibly be carpel tunnel? Could that be causing pain in my back?
Avatar n tn I have some pain in my right wrist where my wrist and thumb connect. When I pick up heavy things it hurts, not unbearable but not pleasant. I can pop the third thumb joint every now and then by pulling on the thumb or squeezing the wrist and it feels wonderful to do, usually in the morning when I wake up. The pain stops. I have no weakness at all, just pain. I skateborded as a kid and had my share of falls, I'm twenty six now.
Avatar m tn Have always been a kind of bright, but the troubles make me to walk as pain reliever and other. I get trapped in my condition and do not have control on everyday life. Avatar f tn About 5 years ago I began having pain and weakness in my thumbs. The pain radiates into my elbow area and even seems to be triggered by certain positions. This morning I awoke with pain and clicking in my right thumb. Additionally, there is swelling in the thumb and a soreness into the heel of my hand (where thumb connects to hand). I am taking meds for migraine/stroke (Plavix, verapamil, lasix, lisinopril, along with thyroid replacement therapy and some allergy prescriptions.
Avatar f tn mainly when i laid down at night...then it went away and came back really bad about 6 months with left arm weakness and numbness in my thumb and forefinger... it hurts worse to ben and reach or lie or sit at a desk...after x-rays the Dr. said i had bone degeneration of the c4 and c5. I see a specialist in 2 weeks...can anyone tell me anymore about this? He also told me not to lift over 10 lbs...why is this?
Avatar m tn However, recently, I have developed considerably greater tremors, particularly in the thumb and index finger of my right hand and even more so in the thumb, pinky, and index finger of my left hand. Usually at rest nothing twitches, but under contraction or when trying to execute a movement or task, the twitching/tremors often become extreme. I also feel tight and maybe tingly on the top of my forearms and a sort of almost bony ache in the fingers of each hand. Anyway have ideas?
Avatar m tn The pain is almost gone but I remain with weakness in my right thumb, index finger and pinky. I can barely lift them. I was told that I had a pinched nerve in the C6 area either from the disk or more likely from contraction of the right pectoralis minor or scalene muscles. Should I expect the strength in my fingers to return? What can I told to speed up the process?
Avatar n tn CTS is a is a medical condition in which the median nerve is compressed at the wrist, leading to pain, paresthesias, and muscle weakness in the forearm and hand. The other possibilities are thoracic outlet syndrome and multiple sclerosis.I sincerely advise you to consult a physican/neurologist and get yourself evaluated. Hope it helps.Take care and pls do keep me posted on how you are doing.
Avatar f tn This type of pain and weakness can originate in conditions such as MS, ALS, micronutrient deficiency (like vitamin B), and most commonly, due to stress. Fibromyalgia is also a common occurrence resulting in the same symptoms you are experiencing. As there can be several possibilities, I suggest that you have yourself checked by your doctor, preferrable a neurologist so that you can be assessed and treated properly. I hope you can be rid of this pain soon. Regards and God bless.
Avatar n tn For several years now I have been suffering from sharp lightning like attacks of pain in my chest on the left side behind my breast, this is combined with a weakness and numb like ache in my left arm from the neck to my finger tips. When I have an "attack" my heart rate increases and I briefly have trouble catching my breath. There seems to be a connection to caffeine intake but pain occurs without any caffeine or any action.
Avatar f tn Following that, on Saturday he went to play badminton and after that he started experiencing weakness of the whole arm as well as numbness in the right thumb, index finger and middle finger. On Monday, the weakness got so bad he couldn’t shave and couldn’t reach into his back pocket. Fast forward to Friday and he still has the weakness and numbness although not as bad as on Monday but still not getting better. We had an MRI brain done but it does not show a stroke.
Avatar m tn Upper arm tightnesss and arthritic type hand thumb is new to me. Don’t believe I’ve strained bicep forearm and hand. Mum died from als, she had foot drop first but never really discussed her symptoms. Unfortunately I’m more familiar with end stage. Just wanted to know if my symptoms were typical/familiar to others.
Avatar f tn I have shooting pains in my right thumb and sometimes weakness in it. It hurts worse after using my thumb a lot. I wake up with my hand asleep and last night I woke up with that whole arm asleep and hurting. My wrist cracks badly in that hand as well. It hurts to bend my thumb sometimes too. Sometimes my wrist hurts but recently its been more in my thumb. I was wondering if this was carpal tunnel or if any one had any other ideas?
Avatar n tn I have taken antiviral drugs and am now on some antidepressants at night which seem to help the pain and control and I take pain killers for the nettle effect. I have also noticed a marked drop in my gripping power. and the muscles on the outside of my hand and between thumb and first finger seem to be shrinking by the day. I wonder if there is anything I can do to help this.
Avatar m tn During the 3 weeks I was in bed from the shoulder and arm pain I also started to get some pins and needles between my big and second toes on my right foot. 9 years ago I herniated a disk in my lower back and assumed that this was related. Based on xrays (today I did a cervical CT) I was told that I had pinched nerve in the C6 area either from the disk or more likely from contraction of the right pectoralis minor or scalene muscles. Should I expect the strength in my fingers to return?
Avatar m tn Basically, about a month ago, I started noticing weakness in my left thumb. It was slight, but distinctly there. Over the course of the weeks since, that weakness has spread to my left pinky, left forefinger, right thumb, right ring finger, and right pinky. The rate of progression has increased recently and today, I had trouble squeezing a mustard bottle with my right hand (my right pinky would essentially collapse flat at the 2nd hinge from lack of strength).
4544656 tn?1371593548 I was on compounded armour and it started out as weakness and progressed over a year to joint pain, foot pain, and arm soreness like carpel tunnel, I felt like a 90 year old I was sooo weak but labs were in normal range but the t3 was not at the top and t4 was below 50 percent rather than above. My dr changed me to synthroid and still trying to get dosage right.
Avatar f tn The other symptoms I have are a sore spot in my middle spine, and neck tightness on the right side and some weakness still in the right leg and arm. The pain in my back lower and upper increases with extended periods of sitting. Going to take the steroids for now and hope for the best. Any ideas as to what this is or what I can do to help it? It could be all anxiety and stress, but it’s a lot considering I’m only 20 years old.
Avatar m tn Ok, so for a while now (about a couple of months) my thumb constantly twitches just like I fell this strange feeling in my thumb and my thumb just moves back in forth quickly for a couple of seconds then stops but none of my other fingers do that and have never twitched before i don't know what it is it doesn't hurt or anything it's just weird. I want to know what this is, and how can I fix it?
Avatar n tn Yes, intervertebral disc herniation in the cervical an lumbosacral region can cause these symptoms in hands and feet due to compression of exiting nerve roots at the cervical level and lumbar level, responsible for hand and foot pain respectively. Cervical disc compression if severe or associated with spinal canal stenosis can lead to symptoms in the feet also. You need a neurologist to examine you clinically, ask for an MRI spine to check the exact levels and evidence of spinal stenosis.
Avatar n tn I have pain, muscle cramp, and tingling in my shoulder. and some pain on and off down the arm. Mostly the arm feels heavy. Is this from C5-6 stenosis? Requiring surgery? It is very uncomfortable!
Avatar n tn I was diagnosed with a herniated C6-C7 disk that is pressing on the left nerve root that cause pain in my left arm (tricep, elbow, forearm, wrist) and numbness and tingling in my index and thumb. Weakness in my left tricep. EMG showed weakness in tricep. I tried epidural injection but it did not alleviate the pain. my doc said i dont need ACDF of ADR, but instead he could do a laminoforaminotomy using METRX.
Avatar f tn is there anything that can be done to get rid of this pain and weakness? I do take Mobic once a day and motrin if needed. I ice it and apply heat. PT is using ultrasound, ES. Feels good at the time, but once I manipulate my hand, voila ...
1138632 tn?1260813619 Over the summer I awoke in the night with pain in my Left hand, below the index and thumb finger. The next morning the hand became more painful, weak, and made it difficult to grasp items. The function returned after a few days. But during that time my arm was tingly, my Left foot & leg also began to tingle. The tingle lasted in my hand off/on for a few weeks. The Left leg tingle lasted for nearly 2 months on/off.
