Avatar m tn A cough is generally a result of an irritant such as stomach acid (gastric reflux), mucus (asthma), hair spray, perfume, dust, pollen, mold, even spicy food, post nasal drip, or infection. It could also be due to infection such as pneumonia or bronchitis. Chronic sore throats can be allergic, viral or bacterial in origin. Many viral conditions like EBV (glandular fever) behave in this way with recurrent respiratory infections.
Avatar f tn Symptoms of strep throat include throat pain, difficulty swallowing, red and swollen tonsils, swollen/tender lymph glands in the neck, fever, and fatigue. However, these set of symptoms may also be observed in a viral infection or some other kind of illness. To confirm if this is due to streptococcus bacteria, throat swab or culture and direct physical examination may be done. If this is due to a viral infection, it usually resolves after a few days.
Avatar m tn When I have had symptoms that you described, I have had a viral infection, which has been Strep Throat both times for me. I get pain in my neck when I get this, and it feels like you are getting a cold, but then it doesn't go away. Go to your doctor, or the hospital, chances are that you have a viral infection and need antibiotics. Keep up with the fluids, keep away from milk or ice cream, anything thick like that will get stuck in your throat with the phlegm. Good luck with your recovery!
242516 tn?1368223905 The flu has passed epidemic rates in much of the country, and if you don't have a cold, I'm sure you have a friend who has the sniffles, fever, chills, aches and pains of a viral upper respiratory infection. This is different from a bacterial infection such as sinusitis, bronchitis, or pneumonia. A viral infection doesn't improve with antibiotics as these infections do. A virus hijacks your own body's healthy cells and uses it to reproduce and spread.

Avatar m tn ve got all the same symptoms and now sinus problems on top of that - really sore throat, tickly cough and mucus coming out of throat and nose (often bloody mucus from nose). What is going on!?!? Do my symptoms sound similar to anyone else's? I can't keep going back to doctors as I never get anywhere with them. I just don't seem to be getting any better though?
Avatar m tn Antibiotics will not do anything for a viral infection, nor will they reduce the risk of acute glomerulonephritis in case of the strep throat. Antivirals are not as effective, if the viral infection is well into the replication stages. What did the last doctor suggest? Avatar f tn What other symptoms were present? Sore throat may indeed be caused by viral or bacterial infection. The more common is viral in nature and symptoms such as caused by the inflammation may resolve after a few days of rest and symptomatic relief. Other symptoms that may be present with such infection include nasal congestion, ear pain, headache, fever and dizziness. Rest, increased fluid intake, decongestants, gargle and lozenges may help provide relief.

It could be sinusitis, if it is accompanied by nasal stuffiness and facial pain or pressure. Post nasal drip could also be due to allergens. These are substances like pollen, dust, animal dander, certain foods, insect venoms and certain medications.
