346570 tn?1267500027 When I first started with the panic, I remember feeling something at the back of my throat. It bothered me so much that I took a flashlight to my throat and realized it was my large uvula! Try not to focus on your throat or swallowing. The more you focus on it, the more aware of it you become and thus starts the cycle. Easier said, than done, I know.
277836 tn?1359666174 Thank you, for posting such a complete list of stress and anxiety symptoms ! I have severe anxiety, and panic attacks... and have recently been diagnosed as "cardiophobic" - ie I am irrationally afraid of having a heart attack (despite being a female in my mid 30s). Every one of these symptoms, I have experienced at one time or another.
Avatar f tn For the past 24 hours I've been having difficulty with swallowing. I've had this issue before, but it usually comes on in the evening or when I'm going to sleep. But this time it's been an entire day and not getting better. The symptoms of this are- Food and drink are only mildly hard to get down. The real difficulty is the swallowing when not eating/drinking. I guess it's a reflex? Something I don't really notice usually, like blinking.
Avatar n tn I have been having difficulty swallowing for a few months (food particles sticking in throat regularly) and having to swallow several times to get them down. I also have thick throat mucus. My maternal grandfather died of ALS but all 4 of his children are in their 60's and have no symptoms yet. I feel like I trip on my right foot more often than the average person. I am concerned about the source of my swallowing problems!!
Avatar f tn The last few weeks I have found my eating has slowed right down in terms of pace as I have been a lot more conscious about swallowing and haven't been able to swallow as freely as normal. Yesterday I decided to look in my mouth and I notice that I have a lump at the back of my throat. I had my tonsils taken out when I was younger, but they always said that some has been left behind in the scar tissue.

Avatar n tn You will need to consult your primary care physician who will examine your throat and may ask for some tests like barium swallow or endoscopy to determine the cause for difficulty in swallowing. Hope this helped and do keep us posted.
Avatar m tn Hello, My aunt is having this continuous problem for two years, with this chocking sensation/lump in throat, occasional pains in the chest, difficulties at swallowing and because of this has hard times eating. She eats more crushed food, soups etc. We went to make some X-rays and I was hopping if I could get an opinion on what she might have. Thank you anticipated!
219373 tn?1274921434 i have been having problems swallowing and also abdominal pain...my doc thinks i might be having colon spasms as well as esophageal spasms which would account for my symptoms but the meds i was given are not helping. i have not been diagnosed with MS as of yet but was wondering if anyone has experience with this or knows if MS can cause it.
Avatar n tn I have been having cramping in my throat it feels like a charlie horse and it seems to be more on the right side. it last around 30 seconds and even happens in my sleep it wakes me up. it dose not happen when i am eating or swallowing my doctor has no idea what is causing this. i have sleepapnea and this is very scary. i know i have not pulled a muscle or yawn to make this happen. i hope you can help me or tell me where to look for help.
Avatar m tn So, at times, if I haven't eaten recently and my throat is somewhat dry...and I attempt to eat something bulky and/or sticky, the food ball doesn't go down. It's not blocking my airway, it's lower. So, I then drink some water and can force it down. What I've done when some food is stuck is drink water and do a forceful swallow to push the food down. And when it gets stuck, it can feel briefly like I might black out as it goes down.
Avatar f tn You surely should be evaluated for a possible cause. There are things like vocal cord issues and spasms in the throat area that a doctor would probably consider. Also reflux, which could occur day or night. If this always happens as you are going to sleep and/or wakes you up from sleep, my first thought would be sleep apnea. Before I was diagnosed and began using a CPAP, I had become very afraid to sleep, and avoided it till I collapsed in exhaustion.
Avatar n tn Yes, or maybe on top of that you might need to get checked out by a gastroenterologist for disorders that cause difficulty in swallowing and motility. There are illnesses that can sometime cause difficulty with food going down properly because for some reason the digestive tract does not work as quickly or properly. It is very painful and best that you get checked out. Better to get some help and relief that have to feel pain like that.
Avatar f tn Would the disease be more severe?
Avatar f tn Hi, I have MS and my main symptoms are fatigue and hoarseness. I also have swallowing issues that come and go and shortness of breathe. When I have swallowing issues I have to eat puréed food and also go to a speech pathologist to get checked out. This is very frustrating I know. But the longest I've had to do this was 6 mos. and I am thankful it is not worse. It makes you enjoy food more when you can eat......
Avatar f tn So sorry to hear that your Dad is going through this. Sounds like it's such a discomfort for him to get anything down. After a while of not eating, one's appetite for anything seems to fade. Would some sort of liquid nutrition be an option? i know there are some healthy meal replacements out there that may trigger his appetite again. I'm not sure if he can drink it slowly or not. Perhaps a nutritionist can suggest some options for easy swallowing and digestion.
Avatar f tn I have been paying attention to swelling anywhere else, and there hasn't been any swelling on the lips, tongue, larynx(as far as I can tell) and the only neck swelling is the places I mentioned. The breathing trouble isn't gasping for air or the like, but more mild I'd assume. I'm probably asking for trouble that way, but my insurance doesn't cover much, so I exercise caution with testing and the like.
Avatar m tn After practising this several times a day, I could hear a crackeling sound in my ears while swallowing. I calculated that the throat/swallowing-pain was a result of excessive air in mouth pressed down when I swallowed - into my pharynx. When my nose-swallow was "impregnated" by water-solution, the eustachian tubes opened up for air to flow into them and up the middle ear. I have to repeat this over and over again, not to get swallowing issue and pain.
Avatar n tn The sensation may also result from gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) or from frequent swallowing and drying of the throat associated with anxiety or another emotional state. Other conditions include - cricopharyngeal (upper esophageal) webs, symptomatic diffuse esophageal spasm, GERD, skeletal muscle disorders (eg, myasthenia gravis, myotonia dystrophica, polymyositis), and mass lesions in the neck or mediastinum that cause esophageal compression.
Avatar f tn Hi..you are right that some of your throat issues could be Chiari related but Hashimoto's is Chiari related too....so regardless if it si the thyroid issue or Chiari itself both can be attributed to Chiari. Having Chiari makes us prone to auto immune and connective tissue disorders....so Hashimoto's is an auto immune condition and it is very hard to determine which condition is causing which of out issues. I too have Hashimoto's and had swallowing issues....
