Avatar f tn Long term use of indomethacin can result in gastrointestinal adverse effects. Melatonin is a hormone secreted by pineal gland and is very similar in chemical structure to indomethacin without the risk of gastro intestinal side effects. That’s the reason melatonin is now being considered as an effective treatment option. Patients with history of severe allergies are advised not to take melatonin in general. Hope this answers your question!
Avatar n tn Hi, welcome to the forum, there are hormones and neurotransmitters and receptors which play role in sleep and wakefulness. Melatonin is one such hormone and it appears to be the primary sleep-regulating hormone of the body. It is secreted in relation with normal day/night cycles. It affects sleep itself, decreasing sleep latency, increasing sleep efficiency, and increasing the total sleep time. Melatonin acts on the melatonin receptors.
Avatar f tn Does melatonin give you all three stages of REM or is it mostly to help with the most superficial phase, the dream phase? I understand that melatonin is a hormone secreted at night, and how it is not a drug, but I am just wondering if there is a link between dreams and melatonin.

Avatar m tn The thyroid plays an important role in regulating the body's metabolism and calcium balance. The T4 and T3 hormones stimulate every tissue in the body to produce proteins and increase the amount of oxygen used by cells. The harder the cells work, the harder the organs work. The calcitonin hormone works together with the parathyroid hormone to regulate calcium levels in the body.
1283286 tn?1312911966 Melatonin is a naturally occurring neuro-hormone that is secreted by the pineal gland in the brain. When released from the pineal gland, melatonin causes drowsiness and a decrease in core body temperature. The levels of melatonin rise throughout the evening hours and peak in the middle of the night. That is if there is relative darkness. Even ordinary room light (approximately 100 lux) can cause a rapid suppression in melatonin.
Avatar f tn A shop-bought urine pregnancy test picks up trace levels of the hCG hormone in your urine - this hormone is secreted by the placenta shortly after fertilization - a proper HPT or blood test is really the only accurate way to test for pregnancy x
Avatar m tn Melatonin is a hormone that's produced naturally by the pineal gland in your brain. People buy this OTC to help with insomnia and jet lag. It's thought to be more effective with the latter of those two. Some folks here swear by it, and more power to 'em. For others, including myself, it didn't do a thing. It can produce a nasty side effect of vivid and disturbing dreams for some, but I say, if sleep is a problem for you, you might as well give it a go.
Avatar n tn Hi, welcome to the forum, a Melatonin preparation belongs to class of neutraceuticals and appears to be the primary sleep-regulating hormone of the body. It is secreted in relation with normal day/night cycles. The dosage range varies from 0.5 mg to 10 mg/ day depending upon the requirement and severity of the sleep disorder. Further increase in dose will not benefit you much but increases drowsiness. You need to continue with the phototherapy.
Avatar f tn i study in school about it.. it really is just a hormone that your body creates on its own. given that said it should be fine to take it. ask your doc first though. thats jus my opinion of knowing what exactly it is.
1254306 tn?1270992213 Of course, if they do, it might just be flavored with something rather than anything different from the regular stuff. The good thing about melatonin is lower doses work best and the body produces it naturally so it's nothing the body can't recognize or recognizes as toxic or has to go through gyrations to tolerate it, as it generally does with medication.
Avatar m tn The notion, that the apparantly antiviral effects of the naps must therefore be caused indirectly by the dramatic reduction of the plasma concentration of circulating surface antigen was mentioned in the press release. However, this might not be the true mechanism behind the naps effect.
Avatar f tn t ejaculate there is still pre ejaculate that is secreted through the penis during sex. it DOES contain sperm. it takes one sperm to get you pregnant. like smj said you're going to need a paternity test. good luck to you.
Avatar f tn My motivation is completely out the door at the moment, I have had a lot of stress in the last few months and whether this has caught up with me but I am finding my motivation is crap, and sleep I can't seem to get enough, although when I am asleep I am waking up heaps in the night! Last night I was staring at the ceiling from about 2pm onwards, I am on pills for sleep but just kind of slogging through the days at the moment. Anyone else feel like this at times?
519035 tn?1348275773 you may want to think about Melatonin. It is a natual enzyme secreted by your brain during your REM sleep that helps you maintain a deep sleep. I started taking it after not being able to afford the $50.00 a month script to sleep. I take it about 10 PM and by 11pm I am ready for bed. Though I have other problems that play into not getting a goods nights sleep... I found this helps. You can get this OTC in the supplement section. As always.... please check with your Dr. before taking anything!
Avatar f tn This was not prescribed by the pediatrician; it is over-the-counter. I do not give him any sleep aids when he is with me. He has no sleep issues in my home. He falls asleep within 15 minutes of being put to bed. I have researched and see that some pediatricians recommend Melatonin to help with sleeplessness in children with certain neurological disorders.
Avatar f tn I put away over two gallons a day. What makes it worse is all we can take is tylenol..... and this mommy to be is allergic..... any advice on what may help?
2052165 tn?1331146225 PCS is caused by alterations in bile flow due to the loss of the reservoir function of the gallbladder. Two types of problems may arise. The first problem is continuously increased bile flow into the upper GI tract, which may contribute to gastritis. The second consequence is related to the lower GI tract, where diarrhea and colicky lower abdominal pain can occur as the bile is continuously secreted. But this will settle with time. Regards.
Avatar n tn You may be interested in this article, although the bulk of it addresses the action of a patented form of guggul on the thyroid... I'm not so sure that melatonin is a good thing for us hypos to take after reading this. Melatonin seems to suppress the action of the thyroid, which is why you're getting the same symptoms you had prior to taking levothyroxine.
Avatar f tn Melatonin is perfectly safe to take during pregnancy... #1 reason why it's safe is because melatonin is a natural chemical that our bodies release anyway. I'M sure once u hear back from ur Dr they will tell u the same. I took it during my last pregnancy because I had insomnia and my baby is perfectly healthy. I wouldn't recommend u taking any PM meds until u talk with ur Dr.
21064 tn?1309308733 A - Adrenaline: A hormone secreted by the adrenal medulla that is released into the bloodstream in response to physical or mental stress, as from fear or injury. It initiates many bodily responses, including the stimulation of heart action and an increase in blood pressure, metabolic rate, and blood glucose concentration. Hmmm...I am sure none of us have ever had a rush of adrenaline because of our hearts...lol... "E" is the choice for the next contestant...
Avatar m tn My friend, I take it that you are circumcised and the other was not. Seems like he hadn't been washing his foreskin and head, and that 'white coating' is actually smegma... secreted by both males and females. Most males are usually careful to make sure it is clean when engaging in oral sex. 'The old fingers - smell test!' That won't hurt you; usually only your pride!
Avatar f tn Melatonin is really good stuff. It works as well as the prescription stuff IMHO.
Avatar f tn Hey girl..I'd be very careful following Suzanne Somers advice. She makes a lot of claims in that book, and hardly any of her 'remedies' have been approved by the FDA. She also uses human growth hormone, which is supposedly a fountain of youth of sorts..but what she doesn't explain is that if you have any cancer cells in your body, this HGH will make them grow rapidly.
