119341 tn?1232563757 ScienceDaily (Feb. 29, 2008) — Thalidomide, a drug blamed in the 1950s for causing birth defects, is now showing promise as a safe and effective treatment for women with recurrent ovarian cancer, according to a study led by a University of Minnesota Cancer Center researcher. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Levi Downs, Jr., M.D.
167426 tn?1254086235 ” The study compared the effectiveness and safety of the combination of thalidomide and topotecan, a chemotherapy often used for ovarian cancer, versus topotecan alone for treatment of recurrent epithelial ovarian cancer in patients who had received prior treatment. Epithelial ovarian cancer is a disease in which cancer cells form in the tissue that covers the ovary.
Avatar f tn Just to be on the safe side. You never know... Thalidomide was once considered safe too, but the result was catastrophic!

Because both agents have antiangiogenic properties, the combination of the two might be more effective than topotecan alone, Dr. Levi S. Downs Jr., of the University of Minnesota, Minneapolis and associates speculated.
Avatar f tn Someone said that Topotecan worked better when combined with thalidomide -- don't know much more about it than that, although when I have chemo again (when the Arimidex doesn't hold my counts steady anymore) they are threatening me with topotecan next.

431950 tn?1262819314 Anybody taking Doxil chemotherapy? What kind of side effects are you or have you had? I may be starting this one next week. My other choice was Taxotere (the spelling may be incorrect). Any response will be appreciated.
Avatar f tn Hi......I'm sure it's very difficult watching your dad give up on life because of the pain......I just wanted to offer something that may possibly help him.....I had a bad horse accident in 1982.......where it left me with an incomplete injury.....I suffered sharp shooting pains.......at least once a week.....narcotics didn't touch it......in 2000, they put me on Neurontin, an anticonvulsant drug with the side effects of addressing nerve pain.....
Avatar f tn Hi, Prurigo nodularis is very hard to treat, but current therapies include steroids, vitamins, cryosurgery, thalidomide and UVB light. In the event that staphylococcus or other infection is present, antibiotics have proven effective. A physician may administer a strong dose of prednisone, which will almost immediately stop the itch/scratch cycle. However, cessation of steroids allows relapse to occur, usually within a few weeks.
Avatar n tn I have been treated with several meds, including, but not limited to Iodine drops, Thalidomide, Prednisone, and topical steroids. I am now on 10 mg of Prednisone. I have been on that dosage for 6 years now, and the medication is not treating my body very nicely with weakened joints that ache, bad bruising on my arms and legs, weight gain, and a host of other problems that go with the steroid use. One of the best things for the E/N is the application of a topical steroid, Lydex cream.
Avatar f tn Has anyone found anything else that lessons the symtoms of this? I recently started the Topotecan/Thalidomide course which could add to this problem.
Avatar m tn Treatment includes steroids, vitamins, cryosurgery, thalidomide and UVB light. In the event that staphylococcus or other infection is present, antibiotics have proven effective. Your father needs to take the antibiotics but for the other treatment options you need to discuss them with his dermatologist. It is very difficult to precisely confirm a diagnosis without examination and investigations and the answer is based on the medical information provided.

Avatar m tn Ribavirin is also a teratogen in some animals species and thus poses a theoretical reproductive risk in humans, remaining a hazard as long as the drug is present, which can be as long as 6 months after a course of the drug has ended. It has nothing to do with the menstrual cycle. It has to do with how the presence of ribavirin in the body can impact the development of the baby.
Avatar f tn An ER doc tried to give me something for nausea but I threw it away. When my doc asked if I was taking it at a regular visit I said no. All I could think of was thalidomide from the 60's (?) And all the babies born with defects. I didn't chance it.
