Common Questions and Answers about Tenofovir and kidney

Avatar m tn checking tenofovir trials on hbv only (no hiv coinfection) kidney problems are in less than 1% patients and i haven't found tx discontinuation because of kidney problems. hbv has no mutations at all under tenofovir tx and i think we can find data from some patients using tenofovir for more than 3 years even if not on trial about this. entecavir mono has only 1.2% resistance but has several hbv mutations anyway altough only 1.2% has resistance to entecavir.
Avatar m tn Members the first line oral anti viral for hepatitis b is tenofovir and according to doctor it is long life use. My question are 1) what is the efficacy and safety of tenofovir for says 10years or 15 years or 20years ? 2) what is the longest years of taking tenofovir that we have on record now?
Avatar m tn Here the advise from my doctor regarding this topic - continue with the current medication Viread (tenofovir), monitoring laboratory tests every 6 months including creatinine, if the creatinine were to persistently increased by 0.2 or greater we can change to Vemlidy, TAF. Did you have kidney problem before starting Tenofovir? No worries as this will not resolved any problem... And everybody is different. We'll all react to this medication differently.
Avatar m tn How to reduce SGPT and Creatinine while taking tenofovir? Im almost 3 yrs taking tenofovir but my HBEAG still reactive.
Avatar m tn any drug has sides but you have to be mart to understand who develops sides, on the contraru you are taking drugs that make damage in your situation, Lyvomin is a useless drug and has no indication on hbv vitamin B can have sides and in the wrong dose can make liver damage and death...i guess tenofovir cannot kill, so what do you think vitamin B is a killing drug?
Avatar m tn hbsag relapsed and it is obvious hbsag was too high when you stopped tdf, only hbsag less than 100iu/ml have chances to clear
Avatar m tn So if u have a normal kidney, can the continuous use of tenofovir damage ur kidney?
Avatar m tn Tenofovir is known to have a harmful effect on the kidney tubules and boosting agents may raise levels of tenofovir in the kidneys, exacerbating the harmful effects of the drug.
Avatar m tn I have some question stef about taking tenofovir because i dont know what to do. Im start taking tenofovir september 2020 and i notice that february my urine have bubles until now my urine still foamy or bubles but in evening is normal. Tenofovir can cause proteina stef??
Avatar m tn it is only hiv patients to have kidneys toxicity from tenofovir but studies on hiv have no meaning because those patients are mostly drug users and their organs may be already destroyed by unhealthy lifestyles before using antivirals check the other posts where we posted these results, during tenofovir just monitor creatinine monthly as it should be done on every patients kidneys toxicity is the less with tenofovir, telbivudine and lamivudine, medium with entecavir and maximum with adefovir.
Avatar f tn Hi Cabin3, tenofovir was approved by the fda back in 2008, meaning the longest time it has been in use by chronic hbvers is eight years. Tenofovir doesn't have resistance issues, and not adverse sides either, except for those who have kidney disease in which case it may exacerbate the disease. Also tenofovir has proven to be effective against hbv on long term use.
Avatar m tn which is worse, potential resistance, or possible kidney damage and mitochondria damage? tenofovir is the least damaging on both, studyforhope pointed out already that tenofovir is the safest on this, as regards kidneys hbv patients have lowered kidney function from entecavir more than tenofovir and only those with damaged kidneys before starting antivirals.

Avatar m tn Tenofovir alafenamide (TAF), a new formulation that reaches higher levels in cells but allows for lower dosing, was as effective as the current tenofovir disoproxil fumarate (TDF) formulation but had less impact on markers of kidney function and bone turnover, researchers reported at the 53rd Interscience Conference on Antimicrobial Agents and Chemotherapy (ICAAC 2013) this week in Denver.
Avatar f tn d have any issues with the current medication and the doctor would recommend it. Your kidney results are confusing to me though, in 2018 you have both: GFR 69 ml/mom/1.73m^2, and GFR 92, followed by this year's GFR 77 ml/mom/1.73m^2. Keep in mind to stay properly hydrated all the time.
Avatar f tn That is the basis of vireads nephrotoxicity inclination, sinde Viread , which is tenofovir disoproxil fumarate ( TDF), falls apart rapidly in plasma, producing pure tenofovir, that goes to the kidney and is picked up there. Nevertheless, while still intact, enough TDF enters the liver cells, where is it finally converted in several steps to tenofovir diphosphate, which is the actual substance that inhibits the viral polymerase.
Avatar f tn 1. A lot of people report kidney and bone issues with Tenofovir Disproxil Fumarate (TDF). Its supposed to be low but Ive seen a lot of members report it. 2. Both etv and tdf have to be processed through renal tubes so both can impact kidneys but most people are ok. The Tenofovir TAF is supposed to be very good. 3. Entecavir in high doses in animal studies was causing cancer but no human cases reported yet. 4. Tenofovir has a stonger resistsnce profile for mutants.
Avatar m tn Calcium can go to places in your body that is not good for your health such as building up in your blood vessels and causing some types of kidney stones and can even leach calcium out of your bones. This vitamin makes sure that does not happen and that calcium goes into the bones and teeth where it belongs.
Avatar m tn Once started with Entecavir. Can we change to Tenofovir? I heard that Tenofovir will cause our Kidney problem. Is that true? What are the altenative that I can choose? Seem like no way to choose... can help me up? Thanks!
Avatar n tn no tenofovir is not toxic, since adefovir was a failed drug for both hiv and hbv, drug makers tried to make a lot of disnformation and delay approval of tenofovir as long as possible. to do this they took data from hiv carriers which are mainly drug addicts and drug addicts have destroied bodies, destroied immune system and organs already, no need for hiv or tenofovir to have any damage.
Avatar f tn New Onset or Worsening Renal Impairment Tenofovir is principally eliminated by the kidney. Renal impairment, including cases of acute renal failure and Fanconi syndrome (renal tubular injury with severe hypophosphatemia), has been reported with the use of VIREAD [See ADVERSE REACTIONS]. It is recommended that creatinine clearance be calculated in all patients prior to initiating therapy and as clinically appropriate during therapy with VIREAD.
Avatar m tn 2) Are creatinine and phosphourus better indicator of kidney functions? Should I be concerned with ~190 mg total protein. 3) I do have one kidney stone. Does that cause total protein increasing? 4) Is total protein in 24 hours a better indicator or protein in mg/dL a better one? I did notice that my 24 hour urine measures ~ 2,500 - 2,800 mL, since I drank a lot of water to mitigate kidney stone issue. My plan is to keep monitoring.
Avatar m tn If you are a kidney transplant patient, I presume you are on a lot of medications. How they interact with your HBV treatment is beyond my knowledge. In simple Hepatitis B patients after several years of anti-viral treatment, hbvdna should be undetectable or at least under 100 iu/ml and ALT should be under30 IU/L. Of course, these are just for "normal" patients. BTW, Tenofovir has side effect on the kidney, especially for patients with existing kidney problems.
