Avatar f tn Canine Parvo Virus can cause this. If you have other dogs, they are likely to come down with it if they are young. Cats and people do not get parvo. I'm sorry this happened to your dog. You should be made aware that the parvo virus can live in the ground where ever your dog has been for SEVEN years.
Avatar f tn s previous medical records that I like to have titers ran first, before I vaccinate my dogs for other diseases. He told me that I was wise and explained to me that, because of the research and his own personal testing on this, he has started to recommend to patients to check their pet's titer first to make sure that they don't need an unnecessary vaccination. I can only tell you that every time I've done this, my pet's titers were always within normal range.
Avatar n tn where he could contaminate my dogs with parvo? I have NOOO idea if thats possible or how parvo lasts and if he can just be a carrier or have parvo on him somehow, hope this made sense ;-) thks!
Avatar f tn Is he at home with her? Usually dogs with the Parvo virus are so desperately and seriously ill, they have to be hospitalized, and monitored carefully. This virus has such a devastating effect on the gut, that dogs with Parvo usually cannot even keep down water. And most times their antibiotics have to be administered via I.V. It's true that Parvo victims sometimes don't make it. But I can attest to the fact that some definitely DO, and go on to be very healthy happy dogs.
Avatar f tn No, parvovirus is not transmissible to humans. There IS a parvovirus that children can get called Fifth Disease, that brings on cold symptoms and a rash, but that strain is restricted to humans. Neither virus can pass back and forth from animals and humans. Parvo is very difficult to treat in dogs, which is why that is one of the vaccinations that puppies must have.
4640758 tn?1357483092 s had Parvo, she may not need annual boosters for the Parvo virus. At the beginning, with my dog, I took her for her yearly shots, without thinking. Then it dawned on me, and I spoke to the vet and had her titer tested every year. And she showed constant immunity to Parvo! You could maybe mention this to your vet and see what he says?
Avatar f tn t eating the dogs poop, you should be just fine with the worms. Hope your puppy pulls through, parvo is rough.
Avatar f tn This being said, after much research this is what I was thinking of going, but am nervous as none of these remedies are FDA approved for dogs (i of course will check with his vet but i find that many times hearing other pet owner’s experience is much more beneficial as every dog is different). PLAN OF ACTION: -take him off the vet food.
1812469 tn?1316613488 s the puppy can be put into isolation or in an area with other parvo dogs to keep the infection under control. Gatorade is fine as long as the puppy is eating and drinking on his own, however if he gets sick to the point where he isn't eating OR drinking, Gatorade isn't going to do him any good at all. This is where IV fluids come in. It's best not to mess with this at home if you want to give your puppy every chance of survival.
Avatar f tn We have a 10 week old Cattle Dog puppy who we brought home on November 4, 2011. She was fine but eventually developed Parvo and was loaded with worms. We have had in her for treatment a total of three times and she received transfusions each time. She is drinking water, and peeing. We are getting the wormer in her by forcing peanut butter laced in her... but she won't eat. She has not eaten food on her own since Friday. Now we are worred we will lose her to starvation.
1712422 tn?1443337501 The parvo its self is not harmful but it is very common for parvo infected dogs to get a secondary infection that can be slightly harmful just because pregnant women are immunesupressed (sc). Take the sick dog to the vet for further diagnose, isolate your other dogs and be sure that they get a buster because they can get mildly infected. Disinfectant the house (floors, areas where dogs are mostly and dog dishes with bleach).
Avatar f tn s intestinal and cardiac parvo (2 types) with dogs at greatest risk being under 6 months. This is a virus. Dogs will often vomit as well with it. And sometimes they get diarrhea. They are often dehydrated. There is also distemper. And worms. There's other viruses and things as well. That your dog is still eating is a good sign though. Big question . . . are you immunizing your dog? Do you have a vet? It's time to get your pup checked out. Let me know what they say!
Avatar n tn This doesn't sound like Parvo to me. I have a dog who contracted Parvo just before I rescued her about 7 years ago. The symptoms of Parvo are usually loss of appetite, watery foul-smelling stools often containing blood, vomiting, sometimes becoming uncontrollable, extreme lethargy, rapid breathing, collapse. Of course that is in the full-blown stage.
Avatar m tn I have heard of people leaving for work in the morning, and their dog appeared fine, and they came home in the afternoon, and the dog was critically ill with parvo or even dead. Dogs that have other intestinal parasites, such as worms, are more vulnerable to parvo than are dogs that are parasite-free. Parvo virus is endemic in the environment, so dogs that are not vaccinated against it are at extremely high risk.

Avatar f tn Im pretty sure parvo is what dogs get..
Avatar n tn Hi, One of my boy's got parvo awhile after I adopted him from the pound, so not sure where he got it. He was a Dalmation, dumped at the pound like so many others that year after Disney came out w/ the first live action 101 Dalmation movie over the holiday season when people realized Dalmations aren't the cute little spotted furballs like in the movies......
Avatar n tn almost all of my dogs death was accompanied with stool with thick, dark, stinky(like rotten fish) blood. i went to the veterenary before, and the doctor prescribed me cefalaxin medoxine. it is effective. when my dogs feel ill, dont eat and poos with blood. ill just give it that medicine. but this time, my dog died. after he poo (with dark stinky thick clothed blood). anyone experience this?.
Avatar f tn ve never heard of that other than in dogs I raise dogs and unfortunately lost two about 5 years ago to parvo but we never got it ourselves.
Avatar n tn Both of my dogs have diarrea that smells like skunk, its very watery and its not getting better. What should I do?
662972 tn?1270166301 It is not good for them to be kept like this. To let numerous dogs die of Parvo, for a start, and not to get them all vaccinated, is irresponsible dog-ownership. I'm sorry to have to say that because I am sure she is very attached to them, but something needs to be done.
193609 tn?1292180293 Oh my goodness! First- I find that packing and moving is a great workout! LOL! I hope that is a ray of sunshine in an otherwise cloudy day. Second- when I had a dog, she got Parvo. It was definitely difficult and expensive. I opted to not put her to sleep. Instead we bought the at-home care kit for trying to get her better. I had to put an IV in her neck and she got really bad. She was at death's door. BUT... she survived!
Avatar m tn They usually take 1-2 weeks of fluids and antibiotics among other things. Avoid contact with any other dogs; the dog and anyone in your family that has contact with your dog. The virus is extremely contagious and can only be killed on surfaces with bleach.
730826 tn?1317943334 Well, if you don't do a puppy class at least make sure to socialize your puppy with other dogs and people to make for a friendlier dog. I'm noticing my puppies act afraid of other dogs when I'm out walking them and I want to get them more used to it. I wish you well!
Avatar m tn Yes, done with the Parvo treatments....Vet said it would shed in her stool for 3 weeks and remain on site for 6 mos. I have used more Clorox in the last 3 weeks than I have used in my life.......Inside & out......I'm tired of smelling it & I'm sure my family is too! Glad that's done.... Really need to rip up the plastic sheeting I have taped on the floor in her room & start over.....It sure was easier to clean than the floor would have been.....
