Tamiflu and the flu shot

Common Questions and Answers about Tamiflu and the flu shot

tamiflu

Avatar f tn If you have the flu you need to see your doctor. Tamiflu, a prescription medication, can decrease the severity and the length of the flu but you have to take it right away. Drink more water and rest - but first, see your doc.
4355200 tn?1354593144 t think why no one has offered any input. Are you sure about your flu shot. I had a flu shot last week and the pharmacist said it covers all three (whatever that means). The papers that came with it were somewhat similar to this: http://www.fda.gov/NewsEvents/Newsroom/PressAnnouncements/ucm315365.htm The thing about Tamiflu is that I think you are supposed to take it within 48 hours of *developing symptoms* rather than exposure.
Avatar f tn My husband and MIL had the flu over Christmas, but I had a flu shot and was fine. You can take Tamiflu while pregnant if you do get the flu.
Avatar m tn My son and his family just went through the flu in their home He and the baby had the tamiflu because it was within 24 hours of exposure to the flu bugs, but they had also had the flu vaccine (mist for her, shot for him). Mom wasn't so lucky - she had been exposed over 24 hours and coming down with it already and the doctors wouldn't give her the tamiflu. The other two girls got sick to varying degrees.
167426 tn?1254086235 Just talked with her again and asked WHY the clinic did not suggest to them, at the flu shot times, that her entire family should also be given the shot? I am trying to help her long distance, but the more I think about it, the more I am disturbed about it. There are so many people out there with impaired immune systems, that to me, it only makes sense to protect them in any way available. She has no symptoms yet, but the incubation period is 7-10 days.
Avatar n tn Have you ever had the flu pregnant and how did it effect you and the baby? Also what did you take to treat it my Primary Dr. Wants me to take Tamiflu and im not comfortable with it.
789911 tn?1368636783 We can take the vaccinations, I just had the regular flu shot. I had one last year also, while on tx. Dr. actually recommended it since my ANC was sooooo low. Don't know about the tamiflu.
7714453 tn?1394714282 / flu passed thru me and so far baby boy is healthy. 5 weeks left til hes here!
Avatar f tn d be a better than usual chance for these to mix. And KirbDude1, one difference between the current flu and avian flu or SARS is that this one transmits sustainedly human to human.
Avatar f tn I recently talked to a woman with MS who says she definately will get the flu shot. Her neurologist strongly advises. Every neurologist I've ever talked to or advise column I've read advises the opposite. Am I listening to old school advise? Are the new "dead virus" shots now safe?
Avatar n tn You should always get your flu shot unless you have a immune system problem. The shot is effective for the strain of the flu it was made for this year as far as I know. But there could be other strains going around this year that it will not work for. Specialmom is right tamiflu only works within the first few hours and after that there is not Mich you can so other than rest, Tylenol and fluids.
6822962 tn?1396329659 I ended up getting the deadly flu despite me taking the flu shot. I ended up in urgent care where they told me i got the deadly kind of flu. He prescribed me Tamiflu and was wondering if anyone else has taken it. Did you experience any side effects to you or baby. I am worried about my baby.
Avatar f tn I have then flu now and my doc put me on tamiflu. The studies that have been done in animals on the drug don't show any issues but it hasn't been tested enough. The cdc does recommend treatment with tamiflu if u have the flu or are exposed to someone with it while pregnant. The med will cause gi upset like nausea and vomiting amd diarrhea in 20% of people who take it. It's worth considering since flu rate deaths are highest in children, pregnant women and the elderly.
Avatar f tn I got the flu shot (and do every year). Haven't gotten the flu, but at my last appt, my dr said if I have a temp over 100.4 that I should come in and get checked for the flu right away...if it is, then they can give tamiflu to help with the worst of the symptoms...help keep the fever in check.
Avatar f tn Here the poor woman was living with her mother, taking care of her mother, and she was experiencing all the swine flu symptoms her mother had (duhhhhh!). She and her family were begging the hospital people to give her the TamiFlu but the hospital people refused to give her any TamiFlu because of her three negative Rapid-Flu tests, saying that the U.S. govt. required a positive Rapid-Flu test in order for TamiFlu to be given.
Avatar m tn my son had the flu (despite the flu shot last year) and I had it 13 years ago when I was pregnant with my son (no flu shot)...I like you could not take off work or school and I pushed through it took me about 3 months to recover I couldn't take any meds since I was pregnant but I think if I would of rested it woudn't of taken so long. With my son his case was very mild - he slept it off for a week (no meds..it was too late for Tamiflu) and he was good to go.
Avatar f tn Sometimes getting the flu shot can actually give you the flu. If you keep getting sick, go to the doctor to make sure you arent dehydrated. Drink plenty of fluids and rest a lot. Your baby will be ok as long as you take care of yourself.
Avatar n tn I am currently 16 weeks pregnant and just found out I have the flu. My OB put me on Tamiflu but my primary said she wasn't sure about it. Has anyone been on this while pregnant? I'm worried it's going to hurt the baby. Also it did get the flu vaccine, I was only a couple weeks pregnant so I didn't know but I'm a little mad they push a vaccine that obviously doesn't work.
Avatar f tn Has anyone had the flu while they're pregnant. I'm 33wks 4days and I wonder what should I do. I feel like crap.
973741 tn?1342342773 ve talked about it and I think this is the year we get the flu shot. But remember, the best year the flu shot ever had was 40-50% effective and most years it isn't effective at all. The flu has been around so long it has mutated over and over and over and so the flu vaccine has to guess well in advance of flu season which 5 mutations are most likely that year. If they guess right, it works better. If they guess wrong, it doesn't.
Avatar n tn I never heard of high dose and regular dose flu vaccine! Truth, getting the actual flu is rare. It sure stinks when you get it but most people have it one or two times in a LIFETIME. And NOW we have tamiflu. I'm sure if there are two options, I've only gotten the regular flu vaccine. I'm in my 50's. Two years ago, my son was very sick with a 105 temp. I took care of him and we went to the doctor in the morning.
Avatar f tn You should try going to the hospital , they'll give you medicine there . I went to the labor and delivery room since I'm far in my pregnancy already i got told i had the type A flu and they gave me " tamiflu " and I was also dehydrated . The nurse told me that she was glad I came in cause it could of gotten worse . Better safe than sorry !
Avatar f tn No I had the flu in my first trimester and they gave me tamiflu BC I had only had it a day or so. It knocked it out in 2 days!
Avatar n tn When you are exposed a second time to the same antigens (by way of coming into contact with the actual flu virus), your body is able to recognize the disease, and the antibodies go into action to prevent you from getting the flu, or to lessen the symptoms and duration by basically beating down the virus. Tamiflu isn't a vaccine, nor a substitute for a vaccine. Tamiflu CAN be taken if you're exposed, or very soon after symptoms start.
Avatar f tn There are mixed thoughts on this. I got my first flu vaccine last year due to a good sell job by my doctor. :>) My kids have never gotten it. My thoughts: flu is rare. Much rarer than people think. I've had it twice in my entire life. My kids have never had it. Only certain populations are at true risk for mortality from it. It's miserable when you have it but not deadly.
Avatar f tn i was about 7 weeks pregnant and went to the ER,they said they werent sure if i had the swine flu or flu but not sure so they treated me for the swine flu anyways because i was pregnant, they gave me tamiflu....i wanted to know if there was any risks to the baby from having the flu or from the tamiflu?
