Common Questions and Answers about Tamiflu and the avian flu

tamiflu

Avatar f tn d be a better than usual chance for these to mix. And KirbDude1, one difference between the current flu and avian flu or SARS is that this one transmits sustainedly human to human.
Avatar m tn My son and his family just went through the flu in their home He and the baby had the tamiflu because it was within 24 hours of exposure to the flu bugs, but they had also had the flu vaccine (mist for her, shot for him). Mom wasn't so lucky - she had been exposed over 24 hours and coming down with it already and the doctors wouldn't give her the tamiflu. The other two girls got sick to varying degrees.
Avatar f tn If you have the flu you need to see your doctor. Tamiflu, a prescription medication, can decrease the severity and the length of the flu but you have to take it right away. Drink more water and rest - but first, see your doc.
4355200 tn?1354593144 t think why no one has offered any input. Are you sure about your flu shot. I had a flu shot last week and the pharmacist said it covers all three (whatever that means). The papers that came with it were somewhat similar to this: http://www.fda.gov/NewsEvents/Newsroom/PressAnnouncements/ucm315365.htm The thing about Tamiflu is that I think you are supposed to take it within 48 hours of *developing symptoms* rather than exposure.
Avatar n tn I am currently 16 weeks pregnant and just found out I have the flu. My OB put me on Tamiflu but my primary said she wasn't sure about it. Has anyone been on this while pregnant? I'm worried it's going to hurt the baby. Also it did get the flu vaccine, I was only a couple weeks pregnant so I didn't know but I'm a little mad they push a vaccine that obviously doesn't work.
Avatar f tn Has anyone had the flu while they're pregnant. I'm 33wks 4days and I wonder what should I do. I feel like crap.
Avatar f tn My husband and MIL had the flu over Christmas, but I had a flu shot and was fine. You can take Tamiflu while pregnant if you do get the flu.
Avatar f tn You should try going to the hospital , they'll give you medicine there . I went to the labor and delivery room since I'm far in my pregnancy already i got told i had the type A flu and they gave me " tamiflu " and I was also dehydrated . The nurse told me that she was glad I came in cause it could of gotten worse . Better safe than sorry !
Avatar f tn No I had the flu in my first trimester and they gave me tamiflu BC I had only had it a day or so. It knocked it out in 2 days!
Avatar n tn When you are exposed a second time to the same antigens (by way of coming into contact with the actual flu virus), your body is able to recognize the disease, and the antibodies go into action to prevent you from getting the flu, or to lessen the symptoms and duration by basically beating down the virus. Tamiflu isn't a vaccine, nor a substitute for a vaccine. Tamiflu CAN be taken if you're exposed, or very soon after symptoms start.
7714453 tn?1394714282 I have had the flu and the stomache flu since becoming pregnant going to the doctor is the best route just let them know your pregnant and will prescribe pregnancy safe meds

6576704 tn?1383187473 Thanks so much for answering and yes i feel horrible super sick they did a nose swab and sent it out to get tested the precribe tamiflu cse the doctor said its high risk cse I'm pregnant u have to start taking medication withing the first 2 days
Avatar f tn Here the poor woman was living with her mother, taking care of her mother, and she was experiencing all the swine flu symptoms her mother had (duhhhhh!). She and her family were begging the hospital people to give her the TamiFlu but the hospital people refused to give her any TamiFlu because of her three negative Rapid-Flu tests, saying that the U.S. govt. required a positive Rapid-Flu test in order for TamiFlu to be given.
Avatar n tn Have you ever had the flu pregnant and how did it effect you and the baby? Also what did you take to treat it my Primary Dr. Wants me to take Tamiflu and im not comfortable with it.
Avatar f tn I am 37 weeks pregnant, which is already tough, and I have had the flu for a week. I am exhausted and can not seem to get better. I am a stay at home mom with a 2 year old boy and a 3 year old boy. They have been battling the flu as well. My husband also has the flu, but his work will not let him off. I feel so helpless. Our house is a disaster and I'm not getting any better. Does anyone have any advice for me? TIA.
Avatar n tn A doctor can write a prescription for any patient, regardless of age. He may have meant that your son doesn't fit the criteria for being helped by the drug. For example, Tamiflu is only helpful if started in the first 48 hours of the flu. You don't want him taking a medicine that won't help, and drugs become less effective when given to people that they won't help.
167426 tn?1254086235 Leslee had the flu shot this year, but her daughter that lives with them and is going to college developed Influenza A, last Tuedsay, Wenesday went to ER, dx with the flu, started on Tamiflu 75mg twice daily for 5 days, this put Leslee at great risk because of her immune system, after doing some research I found that the Tamiflu also is used to prevent flu, so I called Les and she went to her clinic today and they have now ordered the Tamiflu for her 75mg daily for 10 days.
Avatar m tn I have been diagnosed with the flu type b on Monday. My fevere goes up and down but really doesn't stay down permanently. I am taking tamiflu, theraflu, Motrin as prescribed by the doctors. My throat feels ripped open and today I noticed that there is some blood in the phlegm that I cough up. Is this a sign of pneumonia?
Avatar n tn My throat and mouth are on fire because of all the mouth breathing and the aches pains and chills are enough to send me up the wall! I have never had the flu before but I wouldn't wish this on Hitler! I have been taking tamiflu as prescribed but it is working VEEERRYYY slowly. I have lost 7 pounds and throughout this pregnancy so far I only gained 10.
Avatar n tn Ive already started taking tamiflu and cough syrup with a decongestant. How dangerous is the flu to my baby. I know a high temperature can cause birth deffects. Luckly i havent had a fever. But what about the virus in general?
Avatar f tn I have then flu now and my doc put me on tamiflu. The studies that have been done in animals on the drug don't show any issues but it hasn't been tested enough. The cdc does recommend treatment with tamiflu if u have the flu or are exposed to someone with it while pregnant. The med will cause gi upset like nausea and vomiting amd diarrhea in 20% of people who take it. It's worth considering since flu rate deaths are highest in children, pregnant women and the elderly.
6708370 tn?1471490210 4 and am just going to take it easy, drink lots of fluids and my son brought me some chicken soup I suppose I could be convinced that the tamiflu is worth taking but the ER doc and nurses said, meh, take it if you want to and seems like I read something bad about it? Med team thought that the most it would do is to shorten my flu by a day or 2 Will see what liver doc says tomorrow Thanks everyone for all your concern and good suggestions Off to bed!
Avatar f tn I am 19 weeks today and super sick with the flu :-( This is miserable. I am a teacher, so I know its been going around, but being pregnant with the flu is not ideal at all :-( Fortunately, I have no stomach symptoms at all. Its all in my head, throat and ears. Feel like my head is going to explode. Not to mention the awful body aches...
Avatar n tn Thank you!!! Yes. I have all flu like symptoms and that's why she recommended it. She said if it was the common cold then the medication would bit do anything but if it is the flu then I will feel better soon. Amazing how it took about 20 pharmacies for me to find the medication. Thanks for the info.
6822962 tn?1396329659 I ended up in urgent care where they told me i got the deadly kind of flu. He prescribed me Tamiflu and was wondering if anyone else has taken it. Did you experience any side effects to you or baby. I am worried about my baby.
8960138 tn?1407673893 Yes, thanksgiving week, my son had the flu. I was so sick and was sure I caught it too, but I could only take tylenol and Tamiflu. Drink lots of liquids. Other than that, you're literally going to have to sweat it out. Hope you feel well soon.
