Common Questions and Answers about Taking valtrex and pregnancy

valtrex

Avatar f tn I have been taking Valtrex regularly for 2 months and I have been taking 1 gram of Valtrex steadily for 2 weeks, and it is not going away. Valtrex has always worked quickly when I have had outbreaks in the past. The symptoms of this lesion (itchiness or soreness) come and go. What could be causing this? Could it be something other than herpes? Could the Valtrex be harmful to my baby? I go to the doctor again, soon, but want to be armed with all the inform. I can.

Avatar f tn A fertility doctor (because we had problems getting pregnant) and then my regular OB once we finally did get pregnant and they both told me it was ok to continue taking the valtrex. And even now my regular OB is telling me to just stick with 500mg/day for the duration. I'm so confused.......................and now worried.
Avatar f tn The taking of an anti-viral is a mixed blessing. Go to the FDA site for information on Valtrex. A culture should have been taken, but this isn't done very often these days. Cipro is contraindicated during pregnancy because it interferes with cell replication, essential to the development of the fetus.
Avatar f tn The outbreak was type 1 and it was on my butt. He decided to go ahead and culture the sore/cut and said if it comes back positive for herpes I would need to have a csection and the results should be back either Wednesday or Thursday. My biggest worry is if I go into labor before then. I don't want to have an unnecessary csection but I also don't want to put my baby at risk. I called the lab doing the culture and they said the results aren't schedules to be back until Saturday.
Avatar f tn After 6 months on suppressive therapy, I was having constant vaginal itching and redness. My OB changed my valtrex to 1 gm and had vaginal itching decrease but did not go away. I was prescribed a cream-triamcinolone acetonide 0.1% and it would help to relieve the itch, but it would come back a few days later. I have used the cream for 2 years off and on, until recently due to becoming pregnant. Is itching a side effect of the valtrex?
Avatar f tn we have over 20 years of info on taking daily suppressive therapy with acyclovir non-stop. valtrex is an acyclovir prodrug and we have no reason to think that it's any less safe. we have over 15 years of info on taking valtrex suppressively non-stop now too. there are no long term side effects. no reason to stop taking it unless you want to. why have more ob's than you have to is my motto plus if your partner is negative, it helps protect them too. keep asking questions!
233552 tn?1228319699 The ER doctor just looked at it and said it was shingles. He also had another doctor come in and she said the same thing. It's on my right arm and goes up my should to my back. It's kinda in a line. They said I could take Valtrex (my fav med) but since I'm now PREGNANT I have stopped taking all meds. There has been no studies with pregnant women so I don't want to take anything. It took us tooooo long to get pregnant for me to mess it up in anyway.
Avatar f tn ve been taking 500mg of Valtrex every night and plan to do so for the next year to year and a half as suggested by my doctor. I have had no other outbreaks since the first one. My doctor explained to me that taking Valtrex on a regimen would help the virus become dormant. I was wondering what that meant specifically in terms of my likelihood of transmitting the virus to sexual partners with or without condoms.
Avatar m tn The medicines are considered very safe in pregnancy, and the protocol is that women with HSV 2 infection, with or without symptoms, get suppressed, not just women with symptoms. If I were you and your wife, I would insist on daily therapy because everything you have read says you can shed the virus without symptoms and you want the most protection possible.
Avatar n tn t had an outbreak since around June, upon that outbreak I started taking the valtrex. The last month I ran out and didnt take them for two weeks. I began to take them again for the next 2 weeks and then had sex using a condom with a guy. The condom broke. I had no sign of an outbreak until 3 days after having sex with him. Could this mean that he also had herpes and it triggered an outbreak? Why did I get an outbreak when I had been taking valtrex for 2 weeks?
Avatar f tn After I posted this I talked to the hospital doc about my negativ test result. She didnt think Valtrex had interferred with the results. I have had "herpes symptoms" four months, taking Valtrex last four weeks. Maybe I could have a new test taken in a couple of weeks when my system is clear of Valtrex? Just to be on the safe side? Just no it is all too confusing. One doc says: HERPES! The other says: no this is not herpes.
Avatar f tn I've had one outbreak while i've been pregnant (I'm 35 weeks) and that was due to me stressing out and forgetting to take my medication. I choose to take valtrex,it's a suppresent and my ob said it's fine to take while pregnant. I recommend talking to your ob about taking it. Hope this helps.
Avatar f tn Hansfield for your reply. I am also concerned about breastfeeding and taking the Valtrex. How would it affect the baby? Thank you again.
1713150 tn?1314467342 I am taking Valtrex everyday for supressive therapy. But when I do get another outbreak, do I need to be put on antibiotics? Because I have MS the last out break had me in relapse mode in a major way. Infections really mess with my disease. Do I need to b put on antibiotics? I will ask my Dr. next time I go. But do you know?
Avatar f tn Pregnancy category b drugs are deemed safe by the FDA for pregnancy. Other pregnancy category b drugs are prenatal vitamins and tylenol. So, I would feel confident that your using this is safe. You can check with your doctor too but would not worry!
Avatar m tn I will talk to my OB, but I was wanting the opinion of others on this board - if I stop taking the 1 gram daily dose, is it possible my body will have developed a dependence on the Valtrex and outbreaks will run amuck again? Or, should I theoretically revert to the same number/pattern of outbreaks that I had prior to beginning the suppressive therapy (which although the outbreaks were numerous in the first 3 months after my son's birth, they had been infrequent before then)?
Avatar n tn I took your advice and stopped taking Valtrex. It turnd out, it was not helping the symptoms. Thank you.
Avatar f tn What other sort of work up have they been doing during your pregnancy with all of this? Have they tested you for yeast and bacterial infections vaginally? Do they suggest anything other than herpes as a cause? Have you had any more ob's cultured to confirm that it's all just herpes going on? You can always try switching to acyclovir 400mg 3x/day and see if you do better on that. Some folks just don't tolerate valtrex.
Avatar n tn Burning more in the Genital area but all over my body! I have been taking 1 gram per day for 4 months. I was taking for longer before but i stopped to see if that's what's been causing the burning for about 1 month but im not sure if that was a long enough wait because i still had the burning.
Avatar m tn ) Really, be more surprised when you have recurrences on suppressive therapy, not be worrying about what might cause one :)
Avatar n tn You can absolutely have a normal/healthy pregnancy and delivery of your baby with HSV. You may want to opt to take something like Valtrex for the last few weeks of your pregnancy to help stay clear of an outbreak though. Almost always a c-section is NOT required and not needed.
Avatar n tn Can taking Herpes medication, such as Valtrex, create a later false positive test for the STD?
Avatar f tn I have been taking Valtrex 500 mg once a day for 1.5 years. I have had GH for 20 years and had begun to get monthly outbreaks so i started the suppression therapy. I have had only one outbreak, lasting 2 days since beginning the Valtrex.
Avatar f tn Yes, I am still taking 500 mg Valtrex daily. I am on hormonal replacement too!
