Common Questions and Answers about Taking metformin with food

glucophage

Avatar n tn Some meds that can cause nausea and other GI complaints are best taken with food. Eating some food usually helps with these side effects. You can ask your doctor to be certain if this could help your side effects. Plus you could discuss changing meds. BTW There is a combination pill Janumet that c ombines Metformin and Januvia. This may be helpful to you as well.
Avatar n tn I was wondering if it's possible for metformin to cause severe food sensitivities and colitis. I am a 36 year old female with polycystic ovarian syndrome. After initiating metformin, many of the hormonal problems, including weight gain despite daily exercise and healthy eating habits, have greatly improved.
1724834 tn?1310225415 I am taking 500 mg of metformin but she said she may up the dose once I get used to it. She warned me that it could upset me stomach and cause a lot of running to the bathroom....and OMG it did! When you had your IUD do you remember ever losing your sex drive? I'm sorry that's so personal but I have notices a huge difference in my sex drive about 3 weeks after having it inserted. Did you use anything to help you get pregnant?
Avatar n tn I am Type ll diabetic taking metformin & Januvia. My levels are climbing and the Dr. is considering insulin for me. I do not want to be insulin dependent. Trying to lower with diet changes but have other health issues that restrict what I can eat. I have high cholesterol (can't take any statin drugs to lower), diverticulosis, irritable bowel, fibromyalgia and now a mouth full of braces so am unable to eat many things because my teeth do not hit together to chew.
Avatar n tn I'm newly diagnosed diabetic and taking Metformin 500mg 2x a day. I have been taking it for about 10 days and have had the worse cramps and stomach pain! I'm not sure if it is my pre menstrual, which never feels like this, or the new medication. Has anyone had stomach pains or cramps as side effect of Metformin? I'm also taking Lisinopril-HTCZ.
878888 tn?1319634044 I have 2 questions, If I take Metformin with evening meal and thyroid in am is there still a chance for interaction? Is there a good diet that works for people who have somewhat high blood sugar level but not at extremes that will help me lose weight. Sorry for the book, but am really concerned as I am a single mom with a 15 yr old still to raise and I must be able to keep working to support both of us.
Avatar m tn I've been taking Metformin 500 mg once a day every morning. My blood glucose level has been stablized and between safe range, 70 to 85 for fasting test and 80 to 120 at 2 hours after meal. I believe the improvement in blood sugar is because of exercise and diet rather than medication. My question is: should I stop taking Metformin 500 mg? I've heard that this is a very low dose and does not affect much on controling blood sugar. Thanks a lot in advance for your advice and suggestions.
393893 tn?1283551230 Other people have mentioned taking it after you eat, not with your food, or before. But, with pcos, the metformin could help everything to stabilize enough so that you could ovulate on your own.
766872 tn?1240341112 THANKS ALOT FOR YOUR RESPONSE, I WAS TAKING METFORMIN AND GERITOL BEFORE AND I DIDNT KNOW WHICH ONE MADE ME SICK BUT WE'LL SEE!
Avatar f tn From my experience with metformin, although just taking it didn't make any difference, the minute I started doing excercise and watching what I ate the weight just started falling off. Before I was on metformin, I could excercise and diet as much as I liked and it made no difference to my weight. So it has definately helped with weight loss when I put some effort. So it does help with weight loss, but only when you are already trying to lose weight. If that makes sense?
Avatar n tn I am taking 1500mg, 500mgs 3xs a day. Always with food or milk. Did your DR prescribe folic acid with that. I'm taking 4 - 1mg tabs aday. When I was taking it in the morning with the Metformin I would feel sicker. I started taking th folic acid with my metformin at night with dinner and would feel sick.
1604313 tn?1304361623 I know metformin is most effective with clomid, but has anyone had any success with just metformin. I jus started it yesterday.

Avatar f tn Hi, not really positive however when I was diagnosed with diabetes cut out all the food that I was told to, started taking metformin, 1000 mg a day I started losing weight. I lost 10lbs a month for 3 months.
Avatar n tn My fingers are so numb, and my urine is dark yellow and opaque. Yesterday and today I stopped taking Metformin I feel better; however, but my blood sugar in the morning was measured 143 and 242 after I ate dinner. Please give me an advice about my situation. Thank you very much .
Avatar f tn Just Metformin is making me more nauseous and discouraging. So I eat one date fruit with every Metformin i,e just after swallowing Metformin. Is this okay?. Also I eat grapes now whenever I feel like need more energy to move around. Is that good? I lost my apetite after started Metformin. So trying to be more on fruits. Will this help leveling my blood glucose or am I worsening it? I really need your help and suggestion RE: what fruits are good with metformin?
Avatar f tn To lessen your tummy problem take your dose with food like with your mid-day meal. If it does help but your tummy still feels a bit upset try splitting the tablet in two parts and take at different times, again with food. And do not consume alcohol right after taking.
393893 tn?1283551230 Hi jjsh44, I was on metformin for several months. Although I didn't have any luck with it, I hear many do. It's supposed to help regulate the insulin in your body to help with PCOS so that your ovaries can ovulate on their own. In my experience, the first couple of weeks were rough....I felt very nauseated after taking it, so make sure you gradually increase your dosage to get to your full dose.
Avatar f tn Had it taken after meal or after taking snack, the problem might not be felt.
Avatar n tn Metformin (Glucophage) must be taken with food otherwise it may cause nausea or vomiting, gas, ingestion, and abdominal discomfort leading to loss of appetite and, of course, excessive weight loss. Your mother might want to switch to the long-acting form of Metformin, called Metformin ER, which has fewer side effects in patients. Please discuss this with her doctor.
Avatar n tn I am a 49 year old woman. I was diagnosed w type 2 diabetes two years ago. Since that time I have been taking metformin 500x3per day w 'permission' to take a 4th if a social situation should require further food intake. I am VERY careful what I eat, and I exercise and get enough sleep and try to take good care of myself. I have a new doctor who ran all his own tests. I also have Hashis hypothyroid. My thyroid #s came back high so I have to lower them asap.
245020 tn?1209657943 Well are you on Metformin for diabetes or PCOS? Not that it matters, but just wondering. I take 1000mg of Metformin a day. Metformin will upset your stomach, cause diarrhea, etc. but that only lasts a couple weeks. I'm currently in my 2nd month of taking Metformin and I'm taking a pregnancy test at the end of the week! Did your doctor not explain the side effects? Upset stomach is a normal side effect. Check out soulcysters (dot) net and click on their Metformin forum.
1632323 tn?1425010283 225 pounds. I started out slowly with 30 minute walks a day for a week, 500 mg Metformin for the first week as well but after the first week 1000mg split in the day, 500/500 2x's a day. Now, Metformin did not agree with my body for at least the first month but I was a little thankful for that because it certainly "Cleaned my insides out" and that's always good lol ! I tolerated the pills telling myself if this is what I need then I'm going to deal with it.
1441125 tn?1284071885 What is important, though, is to make sure in addition to taking the Metformin, you lower your carb intake, lose weight if needed, and get regular exercise. Those things will help your blood sugar a lot more than cinnamon!
Avatar f tn We are almost 33 weeks pregnant currently, and i have been taking metformin the entire pregnancy- usually they take you off the metformin at around 12 weeks or so.. studies show that continuing the metformin when you have insulin resistance or PCOS does decrease your chances of miscarraiage. however i believe the studies show that coming off at 12 weeks is good, the benefits of it are done with at that time..
