Taking cytomel for weight loss

Common Questions and Answers about Taking cytomel for weight loss

cytomel

Avatar n tn If you are on a synthetic T4 drug like Synthroid and you are not taking a T3 drug like Cytomel, then you may need to find an endo who will test and treat the FT3 levels, so that you can lose the weight.
Avatar f tn I am recently diagnoised with hypo-been taking 100 synthroid for almost a month. I work out 5 days a week I was wondering if anyone has taken cytomel along with synthroid? If so has it helped in weight loss? I work out so very hard and go to the gym twice a day, The doctor says until my metabolism and thyroid get on track my weight won't change. I have been doing some research on cytomel and am thinking of asking my Dr. if I can try it. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!
Avatar f tn NDT and Cytomel will work for some people. T4 meds work for some people. T4 and Cytomel will work for some. NDT only works for some. The bottom line is that it is not the type of med that matters most. The important thing is getting your biologically active thyroid hormones, Free T3 and Free T4 up to a level that relieve symptoms. That can be accomplished with adequate doses of T4 meds, if your body adequately converts T4 to T3.
Avatar f tn I have a co worker who was getting T3 for weight loss, DON'T DO IT...She of course was not getting it legally. Yes she lost some weight (not much though), now that she can't get it she has gained it all back plus more. She is slowly trying to lose weight the correct way with the help of her doctor. She was honest with her doctor & was told that taking T3 for weight loss only was NOT a good idea since she was taking something her body did not need.
Avatar f tn Optimizing your levels will help to get your metabolism to where it should be and also help with the hair loss. Just for info, TSH frequently becomes suppressed when taking adequate thyroid meds so as you increase your FT4 and FT3 levels, don't let the doctor become alarmed with a low TSH and try to reduce your meds. TSH is a useless test when already taking thyroid meds. In addition hypo patients are frequently too low in the ranges for Vitamin D, B12 and ferritin.
894666 tn?1274097896 Has anyone ever had a similar problem. If it is the cytomel, I think I need to stop taking it. I was hoping it would help with weight loss, which is has not.
Avatar m tn So, I am not sure how much of taking levo is responsible for my weight loss and how much is added exercise. I heard rumors that levo helps one loose weight but I really haven't heard people on this fourm talking much about loosing weight as part of their total healing process. I hope this answers your question. Maybe others here can help.
Avatar f tn Hi, I met a lady at the gym last week who happens to have thyroid disorder as well. She is hypo, however she looks great, she told me she used to have a hard time loosing weight even exercise daily. Her doctor precribed Cytomel at low dose with Synthroid and she said she started loosing weight easier. I heard a lot of hypo patients complain of weight gain or unable to loose weight, but don't hear much of patient taking Cytomel. Is there a reason why doctors don't prescribe Cytomel much?
Avatar m tn When you were on 100 mcg Cytomel for weight loss, did it make you feel hyper at all? Did you lose weight while on it?
Avatar n tn I have been taking 75mg of Cytomel for 4 weeks now to help with my depression, I do not have a thyroid problem. I am alslo taking 300mg of Welbutron and 75 of Effexor. Avatar n tn Hi ....Is there anyone on cytomel for hypothyroidism? How long does it take to work? I have put on about 10 pounds slowly even though I have been exercising atleast 3 times a week for 5 out of last 6 months. Then finally about a month ago I got diagnosed with hypothyroidism. At least now I know the reason for weight gain. I just started on 25 mcg of cytomel. I can't wait for it to start working. Just this week I started burning at least 500 calories a day by exercising ....
Avatar n tn The Thyroid Disorders Community is a great place to be as you work through stabilizing your medication regimen. I have the priviledge of knowing several of the members in this community and have found them to be most knowledgeable, caring, helpful and supportive. There is also an excellent Thyroid Tracker available as well! I see you are struggling with some weight issues, which can be common with various thyroid disorders.
Avatar n tn I took that for 3 weeks and had lots of side effects. So Doctor asked me to stop it after taking it for three weeks. I went without any meds for 1 week and measured TSH again ...it was 5.0. Then I got started on 25 mcg cytomel. I have no major side effeccts on cytomel so far. But my big concern is my weight. Over the last 6 months, I have exercised at least 3 times a week for 5 out of 6 months. At present I am burning 500 calories a day by exercising in the gym.....
Avatar f tn Cytomel really shouldn't be taken for weight loss. It's okay to take some, along with some T4, but you really should try for a balance between the two. Also, you are on a pretty high dose. The increase from 25 to 50 was huge. After two years on Cytomel, do you have any more weight to lose? Do you have peaks and valleys in your energy level throughout the day? How do you take your Cytomel? Do you split it into more than one dose?
927140 tn?1244210051 Phentermine is for weight loss and not many Doctors prescribe it which is why I am wondering why yours has. Either way...dont take the Celexa and Synthroid together at the same time. Synthroid must be taken on its own with water and then the other meds at least an hour later. I take a heart med first thing in the morning then my T4 med an hour later as sill me decided one morning to take them together and I felt as if I was walking on the moon!
705042 tn?1228721787 The cytomel you are taking is probably too high a dose compared to your levothyroxine. Get a second opinion, and get copies of your tests. Your doctor sounds a little iffy.
Avatar n tn I went onto a body building website and brought it as i was so despret for weight loss. I did research on it and didnt think much of it as i followed instructions on how to dose it properly. Its the first time i took it and now i dont know wats going on can you please help me?
Avatar f tn I had my bi-annual thyroid checkup and my doctor said I was on too much meds due to my weight loss and reduced me to a half Cytomel and 100 mcg Synthoid. Got tested again after 6 weeks and was told I was slightly high but could stay at that level. However I was feeling awful on that (really tired) so I talked to my doctor and agreed to going back to 25mcg Cytomel/75 mcg Synthroid.
Avatar f tn it sounds like you were doing a wonderful job of maintaining your weight loss until you became hypo. I commend you for being able to maintain your weight for such a long time. Can you give us an idea of what a typical dinner is like? You might still be eating things that are spiking blood glucose, which in turn spikes insulin levels and after the food wears off in a short time, the hypoglycemia takes over. That's called reactive hypoglycemia... I have it too...
Avatar f tn ve been complaining to my doctors for years (literally since 2003) about symptoms of fatigue, hair loss, inability to lose weight, and weight gain. Started testing for thyroid problems in 2003, but they only did the TSH test which always came back normal. Never did the free T4 test until 2005. I'm a concerned about pituitary problems as this is what i have read from various cites (mayo clinic and a couple of other good sites).
Avatar n tn Lupo does not believe or think the free t3 has anything to do with fat loss or weight loss because of the science behind calorie in calorie out, but not everyone is the same--some where along the way I have really slowed my metabolism down and would like to know how to repair it and there has to be some correlation between the Free T3 levels--He says that they don't usually treat based on those numbers because of the cytomel being short lived, so then I would think you would go by the level
Avatar f tn I am weight training as part of my exercise routine. I used to take Creatine drops to supplement my energy and endurance. Now that I am on Cytomel, can I still do this? Finally, are there any safe fat burners and energy boosters that can be taken with Cytomel?
Avatar f tn She told me she was 20 lbs over weights due to being hypo and was only be able to loose few lbs even with teaching many aerobic classes and eating healthy until she heard of Cytomel. She started taking 25mcg of Cytomel 4 yrs ago and noticed the fat melted quickly. She is now at her ideal weight and very fit.
822804 tn?1298226302 I am 27 years old and am hypothryoid currently taking Synthroid 150mcg and Cytomel 25mcg but am only taking 1/2 tablet daily.I am experiencing hair loss now...larger than normal clumps are in my hairbrush after brushing my hair and I am also losing hair throughout the day, strands here and there.Would this mean that my meds need to be increased or decreased?what should I do?I do not have a thyroid anymore - i had a total thyroidectomy a little over a year ago.
822804 tn?1298226302 I was dx'd with hypO in Jun 08 and with Hashi's in Oct 08. I was on synthroid until Jan 09, at which time I was changed to levothyroxine + cytomel. I have not been able to lose anything on either regimen. I continue to watch my diet and exercise in hopes that one day I will be able to get rid of at least a small amount. Don't give up. I'm told that when the thyroid levels are right, the weight will come off.
Avatar f tn It is so frustrating because given that I was on a weight loss program over two years ago, I was on b12 weekly shots and just taking levothyroxine (sand filler) and my symptoms were eliminated. Plus, I was losing weight. Grant it I was on a 800, 900, and 1,000 calorie with supplemental drinks for continuous metabolism burn but it did the trick. I just don't know anymore and I am trying to figure out a way but I understand what the doctor is doing.
