Avatar m tn My dad was recently diagnosed with CHF and was given Carvedilol. He is taking 12.5 mg twice a day. His blood pressure is well controlled now that he is on the pill, but there have been 3 times when his blood pressure drops way too low and he feels like fainting. Is that normal? How long does it usually take to get used to the drug?
Avatar m tn d ask the doctor you are most comfortable with to evaluate your Coreg/Carvedilol dosages. It is a powerful drug, and if I were asked to take 120 mg I'd run out of the office, it just slobber-knocks me. I have CHF, and guess your level is quite slight, I used to walk almost exactly like you until my lungs filled and other problems. If your lungs aren't filling and you aren't experiencing leg/belly water and weigh gain, I'd sleep well.
907968 tn?1292622204 I just got a refill of my Carvedilol (3.125mg) I take two pills in the morning and two in the evening and it has been this way since August '09. I read the side effects just out of curiosity and I had nothing better to do and what I found was, "Check with your Dr. as soon as possible If you experience cold or numb legs or feet or unusual leg pain". And it goes on to say "Contact your Dr. immediately if you experience....(lists what seems like 10,000 things)...
Avatar m tn That said, carvedilol lowers blood pressure, sometimes to an extreme. Were you taking carvedilol when your heart rate went to 150? After being off carvedilol, what is your blood pressure, and did your heart rate change after being off the drug? I'd ask your doctor if you should have a nuclear stress test to look for a blockage in your heart arteries, and/or a heart echo to look at valves, etc.
907968 tn?1292622204 an update.. I did start walking again but only because the weather improved. First time out it was a bit hard but the next time out it was easier, and easier. I'm still a couch potato during the day and take my walk shortly after dinner. Had a blood draw this Friday (11-6-09) for cholesterol and a couple other unrelated things... Item...........Before....After (USA numbers) Cholesterol....130...136 LDL..................80......83 HDL.................42......20 Trig..................
Avatar n tn Alcohol is known to have direct toxic effects on the heart, and in some patients is the sole reason for heart disorder. Carvedilol should be taken with food, but I don't think there's a problem with moderate alcohol drinking while taking the med. But alcohol and plavix should be avoided. Alcohol potentially increases the risk of bleeding within the digestive system (e.g.
1210142 tn?1266077031 I am afraid, that the medication that you are on it is pretty standard and chances are that you will take it for all your life ... So far you do not complain about the BB (Carvedilol) so do not worry about take it for ever. The fact is that we all have to change and adjust medications for a while until we find the right combination for us. Normally body takes a couple of weeks to adjust to a new medication. And yes, Carvedilol works better if taken in 2 doses.
Avatar m tn Thus, nebivolol is, with regard to hemodynamic and metabolic properties, similar to carvedilol, although the two act slightly differently — carvedilol is a non-cardioselective beta 1, beta 2, and alpha-receptor blocker, whereas nebivolol is highly cardioselective (blocking beta 1 receptors only) and achieving vasodilatory properties by nitric-oxide release, he added." Apparently is was just officially appvoved for use in the United States by the FDA.
Avatar f tn I have not had a problem with dry eyes with this medication.
Avatar m tn You might ask your Cardiologist to put you on 3.175mg carvedilol twice a day instead of 6.25 twice a day if this is your first experience with it. It is a powerful drug. I started with the 3.175 dose X 2, and it gave me a lot of symptoms such as exhaustion and I do recall a lazy peristalsis (swallowing) issue, but my body got used to it, and he doubled it, then doubled it again.
Avatar f tn I too was on nadalol beta blocker and had to lower the dosage by half but no longer take it. That seems to be the way to take the Carvedilol too so check with your doc. The 39 bpm is very low. You could take a break from the meds altogether. 39 bpm is dangerous. Check with your doc asap.
Avatar m tn Post MI we have great data for both beta blockers and statins. For carvedilol post MI with an abnormal left ventricular ejection fraction the benefits are both for mortality and to help the heart remodel to a more normal shape and function. The minimum dose shown to be of true benefit is the 6.25 mg, and I would even suggest increasing your dose instead of decreasing it. For statins, they too decrease mortality and need for a repeat stenting in the post MI period.
Avatar f tn I got sick a few years ago and it wekened my heart. I take Coreg(Carvedilol) and Lisinopril. I still want children very badly and was told that basically, there were meds that I can take instead of Lisinopril, but I would have to stop taking Coreg. Of course, I would just have to see how I would do without Coreg... Are there any alternatives to Coreg?
Avatar m tn I have recently been prescribed Amlodipine-Benaz 5/10 MG capsules for treatment of hypertension. However, my resting pulse rate has consistently been in the 90's and increasing into the 100's at time, so I have been prescribed Carvedilol to help control the heart rate. My question is, doesn't Carvedilol control hypertension as well...Why should I be taking carvedilol in addition to amliodipine?
Avatar m tn Hello, I am new to this medhelp site. Once I know more about how it works, I think I am going to learn alot from it. I was diagnosed with dilated congestive heart failure in May of last year with an ejection fraction of 20% and with my meds it went up to 27%. In Dec 09, I got an ICD implanted and I feel alot better. Anyway, just wanted to mention that I too experience numbness in my arms and hands while I sleep and this has been happening since the CHF diagnosis.
Avatar m tn I am on 6.25 mg carvedilol twice a day. I am not physically restricted - I walk 1 mile or more day and do 10 minutes of other light exercises most days. My BP runs under 120/80 most of the time. I understand carvedilol helps prevent stiffening of the heart muscle and can help restore LV function to some degree. How specially, so it do this? What is the biochemical mechanism?
Avatar m tn Did you have this issue with the Carvedilol? I do think there is an adjustment period for any meds but I have no experience with beta blockers so I can't say whether or not this is a common side effect. Tiredness maybe but crawling burning skin seems like an allergic reaction to me. Are you taking any other meds? If you were fine on the Carvedilol then maybe you can ask to be switched back to that at a higher dose.
Avatar n tn hello Doctors/ Experts, may i ask what are the common side effects when taking beta blockers (carvedilol)? i am taking just 12.5mg daily and i feel some irregularities like palps, fatigue, headaches, dizzy. i am not sure if these are side effects. im 24yo and dont smoke or drink but having a bp of 140/100. then down to 120/80 when taking 12.5mg carv daily. thank you for the knowledge.
1210142 tn?1266077031 I would check and keep note of your blood pressure and heart rate frequently (and not if you are having any of the symptoms) using a home blood pressure monitoring kit that you can get at your local pharmacy. With that information, you can work with your physician to find a regimen that will make you feel better.
1325672 tn?1290084214 Hi Grampy, I was told to take OxyContin or any narcotic with food. However as Jaybay said you should check with your pharmacist. He/she may also have additionally suggestions for you to help ease your stomach issues. If you weren't told, the literature says you should avoid grapefruit and grapefruit products. That's a given with most all narcotics. If effects the action of the some medications and narcotics are generally one of them. But again check with your pharmacist.
Avatar m tn My husband has atrial fibralation and is taking Tikosyn, Eliquis, Carvedilol, And Tamsulosin. He has recently been diagnosed with GAD, what SSRI can he take safely with his other meds to help with anxiety and depression, anxiety is a big problem.
Avatar f tn I have just been prescribed Spironolactone 25mg and Carvedilol 6.25.

Avatar f tn After spending 8 days in the hospital getting my heart back into sinus rhythm (3 cardioversions + Tikosyn) I am back to Afib (off the Tikosyn) and have a 'normal' heart rate of 100 now. I presently take Lisinopril, Digoxin, Warfarin, and Carvedilol. Is 'my present condition' truly something that should not cause concern to me. Isn't being in constant AFib causing my chances of a stroke to rise considerably???
