Can tacrolimus eye drops and Cyclosporine ointment cause cancer in dogs? My precious dog, baby and best friend was diagnosed just last week with Transitional Cell Carcinoma in his bladder. It is a rapid growing cancer. I am completely heartbroken and am wondering if there was something I could've done to prevent this. He has been on these two eye medications for about a year. His name is Duke and he is a beautiful tri-colored collie and is a little over 10 years old.

What I would really like to know is - what the daily routine has been following surgery.
Have the number of medications / drops become less, and also what is the frequency of administering drops throughout the day. And any changes in behavior.
can I use flax seed oil for eye drops for my dog? We have tried antibiotics, tacrolimus, and all over the counter drops but nothing seems to help, someone suggest flax seed oil but will only try this if I know it will not harm her in any way.
The specialist reviewed all of the options with us - cyclosporine, pilocarpine or tacrolimus with sirolimus. She said that very rarely has she seen any dog respond to cyclosporine after not responding to tacrolimus. She also said that because our dog doesn't have a dry, goopy nose, that pilocarpine wouldn't be a first choice. She recommended a mix of tacrolimus with sirolimus. She said sirolimus is new. I have not been able to find anything about this drug on the internet.
His cretanine is almost 1.4 or around. My question is that should he continue his TACROLIMUS tablets or should switch to some other tablets which are safe for kidneys?
Secondly , in my sorrounding there is an opinion that lowering the TACROLIMUS dose also let the liver enzymes to increase? Do you favour such opinions as my father has lowered his tacrolimus dose to keep his kidneys safe?

s hard to perform my job or other daily tasks when my eyelids are so inflamed. I guess steroids are the only option until they develop something better. Is Tacrolimus a promising nonsteroidal option?

there are prograf assistance programs that the company offers. If this is not feasible than using other cheaper medications such as verapamil for example for HTN for example will alllow much lower doses of prograf to be used (it delays metabolism of the medication) and thus it comes out cheaper.

She has been on many medications. Tacrolimus, cyclsporine, pilocarpine, neopolydex, gentamycin, tobramycin, simplicef, gabapenten, genteal drops, oint. gel, refresh, blink, now she is also taking tramadol for pain. She has been wearing the hood for 6 months to prevent her for scratching her eyes. She just turned 4 and and she is in so much pain, We finally decided to have surgery and have found out it is 2600.00 per eye. I am very worried it won't work.
i would be extremely cautious about using it until more data is available especially since its purported effects on tacrolimus and cyclosporine metabolism are extreme. i am quite confident that there will be clinical trials coming down the road extremely soon.

Tacrolimus eye drops, while they do work, come with the added risk of bladder cancer, so while they ARE a possible alternative, they are not without their problems. If the Optimmune keeps the condition from worsening, even though it doesn't clear it up, it may be the lesser of the evils.
Treatment is by topical steroids or oral therapy of corticosteroids in severe cases. Topical creams like tacrolimus ointment (Protopic) and pimecrolimus cream (Elidel) are also useful.
If still the symptoms do not improve then please get a clinical examination done by a dermatologist.

I am taking Tacrolimus 3mg, Myfortic 360mg, twice a day. My Creatine is 1.25 and BUN is 29. I am also interested in your opinion.
I was initially taking Tacrolimus and then I was switched to Sirolimus. I cannot remember why my immunosuppressive was changed but Sirolimus was pretty new then and maybe my surgeon wanted to try it and see how I did. I wasn't very fond of it as I recall. It came in small packets and was an oily solution. It's been a while but I do remember that. I probably mentioned this to my surgeon and that could be the reason that he switched me back.
Another Dermatologist thought my immune system caused the reaction and prescribed Tacrolimus ointment...told me to put it on until the color came back. I did that for 3 months and didn't notice any significant change....only occasional peeling of the skin next to the head of my penis! Is there ANYTHING that will fix my skin?
Also use of antibiotic creams, antihistaminics, sun screens and tacrolimus(available by prescription) helps but consultation of a dermatologist is required first. Also it is not permanent and will slowly go away with proper treatment and lifestyle changes.
