Synthroid osteoporosis

Common Questions and Answers about Synthroid osteoporosis

synthroid

Avatar m tn I take Synthroid for hypothyroidism, and I was diagnosed with osteoporosis, I have tried several times to take calcium supplements within the guidelines when taking Synthroid, (more than 4 hours before or after taking med), and I become almost immediately exhausted, and sleep for 8-12 hours. I take only about 250 mgs of calcium, and vitamin D as well.
Avatar f tn no Synthroid does not cause osteoporosis - calcium deficientcy does. Thyroid hormone is rarely linked to calcium - but parathyroid glands are.
Avatar f tn t see the indication for the synthroid if the baseline TSH was .02 - this is hyperthyroid and synthroid should not be used. Would consider and endocrine eval (or second opinion) to re-establish a definite diagnosis (ie graves vs hashi vs functioning nodule).
Avatar n tn I recently became hyperthyroid with a tsh of <.06 after being euthyroid on Synthroid 125mcg for the past 18 years. My GP is using only the TSH level to adjust my dose. Is there an additional blood test that would provide more information to assist with this process? (He says T4 won't give accurate results since I am on synthroid) What would cause this to occur after being stable for so long? Could it be from my recent chemotherapy or the resulting 'forced menopause'?
Avatar n tn osteoporosis. Since being on Synthroid for decades has been linked to osteoporosis, I further postulize that high serum levels of rT3 disrupt all metabolic processes including the routine making and replacement of bone cells. Here's the glitch in discovery of the truth: It is unethical to shut a subjects thyroid down and feed them rT3 only. I am free to do this on my own and feel healthier with TSH (0.02 uIU/ml), rT3 (results pending), and T4 (0/2 ng/dL) well below the normal limits.
479581 tn?1317757488 My mom had Grave's and thyroid surgery in the '60s and has been on synthroid ever since. I don't know the dosage. She recently had a TSH of 0.03 (0.3 - 3 range) and no other tests. She doesn't have high blood pressure or high cholesterol. She has a zometa infusion monthly for osteoporosis. She has breast cancer and is having chemo treatments at the present time. She only asked the oncologist for the TSH test because I insisted and doesn't plan to follow up with an endo.
Avatar f tn t understand why she asked about Synthroid. She told me that thyroid meds take from the bones and causes osteoporosis. WHAT??? How come no doctor ever told me?
Avatar n tn WHEN HE SAW THE NUMBERS HE SAID IT WAS WAY TOO MUCH SYNTHROID AND IT COULD CAUSE OSTEOPOROSIS. HE IMMEDIATELY CUT THE EXTRA HALF ON SUNDAY. THE NEXT BLOOD TEST SHOWED THE TSH WAS .88 WHICH WAS STILL LOW BUT MORE IN THE RANGE. WHAT DO YOU FEEL MY TSH SHOULD BE UNDER THESE CIRCUMSTANCES. I AM 72 YEARS OLD.
Avatar f tn s not true that you will get osteoporosis just by having a low TSH. Osteoporosis correlates with actual thyroid hormones (hyperthyroidism), not TSH... Your actual thyroid hormone levels have to be too high and you have to have hyper symptoms in order to have hyperthyroidism!!! The problem is that when doctors see suppressed TSH, they automatically assume one is hyper, without even really "looking" at the thyroid hormones.
Avatar f tn He is reluctant to raise my doseage significantly because I am in the Osteoporosis age, but he is letting me try the nature throid instead of synthroid. Nature throid has t3 and t4. He also told if this doesn't help, then maybe we need to look at trying synthroid and cytomel. I started the nature throid today. I am anxious to see if it helps me feel better.
Avatar n tn s everything made sense (freezing cold hands and feet, slow metabolism....). After being put on Synthroid my period started, but my blood test showed that I was taking too high of a dosage so my doctor lowered the medication. Then my period stopped again. Ever since then I have only had my period once by myself, but I was put on birth control for a few months to help regulate my period (which it did). But when I stopped taking it my periods did not come.
Avatar n tn My bone density plummeted from 15% above normal to 25% below normal in 6 years (post menopause). Could Prevacid excellerate bone loss. I don't have many risk factors for osteoporosis, no family history. I take Synthroid, Verapamil, Prevacid. I eat lots of dairy, greens, almonds. I exercise daily. I eat a fairly low carb diet, minimal alcohol, caffeine, and cola. This discussion is related to <a href='http://www.medhelp.
Avatar n tn ) He has pushed me to take calcium/ vitamin D and meds for my osteoporosis and recently reduced my Synthroid to .137-- even though I told him I was so tired all the time! I asked to take Cytomel in the past, with the Synthroid, but he does not listen. I am still very exhausted and gaining weight -although I eat less than 1000 calories a day. I need lists for everything because I am so forgetful! I do take vitamin D and my synthroid.
Avatar n tn My husband has been on Synthroid for 4 years now and I was never sure why. Lately I have been questioning why he takes the medication. He says his doctor told him it was so he does not get hutch back????? For the pass few years he has become very irritable, forgetful and just plain nasty. Could this be symptoms of the medication? I happen to mention this to him and he decided on his own about 2 weeks ago to stop taking the medicine. Was that a mistake?
Avatar n tn t take any calcium supplements until 4 hours after your synthroid because it will intefere with absorption of synthroid. We can only absorb 500mg of calcium at once, so that is why it is best to spread it out. It also helps to take 1000 iu of Vit. D with the calcium to help with absorption. You could request a bone density test if you are concerned about your bones. I had one recently and it does not take long. Good luck.
Avatar n tn From early June 2013 to mid-December 2013, I took Synthroid 137 mcg (3 times per week) and Synthroid 125 mcg (4 times per week). In mid-December 2013, I had some blood tests (ordered by my PCP), and the results were the following: TSH = 0.104 (normal range = 0.340 - 5.600 uIU/mL) FT4 = 1.28 (normal range = 0.61 - 1.81 ng/dL) FT3 = 3.0 (normal range = 2.3 - 4.
Avatar m tn Thats all you have to do. and post menopausle women who dont need synthroid can get osteoporosis too so we take a calcium supplement. I dont understand why you are so anti med.
Avatar f tn Okay...I'm going through the "fallout" of simple thyroiditis...At first, I was hyper, then hypo...Now, with synthroid, I'm not sure? I'm 6 weeks into taking the medication, and actually feel like the hyper may be coming back although the body temp is ranging subnormal to normal...the heart rate feels like it's pounding quite a bit, and is 90-112 beats/min at rest...here's the labs since the thyroiditis started... 5-20-08 TSH <.01 Free T-4 3.
Avatar n tn My hypothyroidism has always been classified as Sub-Clinical - I do not have any auto-immune conditions or Hashimoto's - but because I always felt "not quite right" because of it, my doctor put me on Synthroid in my mid 30's. Then in my mid 50's, I developed Lichen Slerosus (LS) and I asked my doctor to add low dose Cytomel to my Thyroid meds - which resulted in resolving the LS.
161647 tn?1280608163 Since my PT surgery in March 08, I've had 3 blood tests. My TSH went from 1.015 to 1.8 and now it's 3.41 (0.27-4.2). I am feeling like ****. I'm tired but some days I'm so hyper I can't stop moving. I'm not sleeping. I have leg pains. I am moody. I have night sweats. I am on .75 mcg Synthroid. My doctor said my TSH was perfect. I explained my symptoms, she says I have sleep apnea and I need to lose weight. I am ready to scream.
Avatar f tn My doctor told me that I have Osteoporosis and wants me to try Forteo an injection for two years. Has anyone tried this drug and what were your side effects, if any. I don't want to make my stomach problems worse than there already are.
