synthroid not working

With something like hypothyroid it is really important that we are educated and active patients - working with our doctors and not just passively believing or accepting whatever we are told.

I started Synthroid on February 5 of this year. I don't know if it is working because I still have a hard time losing and maintaining weight and my hair is still falling out (even on 6000 mcg of Biotin!). How do I know if the medicine is working at all? I am new to the hypothyroidism thing, so I don't know if the dosage is too low or if I need a new medicine or something...I won't be able to get blood work done for about 3 weeks. Is that the only way to tell?

It is made up like Armour but just produced by a different company. It seems to be doing well for me but everyone is different. I opted to not even start synthroid when I was first diagnosed because I read all kinds of side effects from including weight gain and I have gained enough weight before I was diagnosed with Hashimoto's. I have actually starting losing some weight so I am happy about that. Let me know what our doctor says.

Hey there, I was diagnosed with Hashi's back in Nov. I was put on 50mcg of Levo. TSH prior to meds was 2.16 (0.34-5.60) FT4 (o.61-1.85) Ft3 3.20 (1.75-4.25). I never felt better on this dose so i went back to Dr about 5 weeks later and he re-tested my blood - TSH 1.93 (0.34-5.60) FT4 0.96 (0.61-1.85) FT3 2.54 (1.75-4.25). My dr switched me to 75mcg of synthroid based on my symptoms. I felt a bit better for about 6 weeks.

Make sure you get tested 6-8 weeks after you have been on Synthroid to make sure the dosage is not too high or too low.

I am happy with the synthroid - it just took a little while for me to see it as an ally, not an alien ;-)

You can see some of your list is a potential side effect of synthroid but not many people get side effects so your list could be just in your head. For instance, it takes careful observation to determine if the med causes loss of appetite, or if any of many other possibilities cause it. I am going monday to get my first T4 and TSH since my TT in January. I am on Synthroid 150 once in the AM. Shoud I fast before this blood draw? I want to do it right....

I have had 4 pharmacists tell me that my body definitely absorbed more synthroid because of the way I changed taking it. If the synthroid is causing these symtpoms, how long until they go away?

3 months ago or so, my TSH was 13. At that point I stopped taking my synthroid (I was not on anything for my hypothyroid condition for about 5 weeks). April 1st I started taking Armour and I have yet to have my lab work down to see where I am at...HOWEVER, I do know there are alot of links between back pain and hypothyroidism. I'm worrying tho that it could be something serious. Im 31. I cant understand why my spine and back would be sore, 3 weeks after an exercise video.

I am sure you all know the many effects that can be blamed on an underactve thyroid and the many that say that the T3 in Armour is something not provided in Synthroid. While Synthroid has improved some of my lethargy, skin problems, concentration, etc, I would be foolish not to try to get the best improvement possible. I only tried Synthroid because I read that an underactive thyroid could cause the problems I have endured for many years and I had to twist the doctors arm to try a low dosage.

my old brand of medication synthroid are available here. so maybe im gonna choose synthroid. i will inform if i started synthroid.
