Synthroid during pregnancy

Common Questions and Answers about Synthroid during pregnancy

synthroid

Avatar n tn Synthroid is a "Pregnancy Category A." Which is safer than Tylenol (which is a "B"). But you should always confirm all medications with your doctor. Are you on Synthroid for thyroid issues or weight loss? He'd probably keep you on for thyroid problems, but with pregnancy, weight loss isn't safe.
Avatar n tn My doctor just told me I was hypothyroid with a TSH of 5.85 and gave a prescription for synthroid(sp). I am just finishing my first trimester of pregnacy. I have no symtoms at all of hypothyroidism, no family history of thryoid disease and no antibodies in my blood. I feel very uncomfortable taking a drug during pregnancy that I don't think I need. I had no trouble getting pregnant. This is my second pregnancy, first one had no complications with healthy 9 lb baby.
Avatar f tn I think we all have our worries and times during the pregnancy when we seem to worry more than other times. Best of luck and ssbd to you!
Avatar n tn this can easily be checked every few weeks. Synthroid when monitored during pregnancy should be adjusted accordingly ie to get you within the proper range warrented for each trimester. Please, Please check with your Dr, tell her your concerns and insist on being monitored. My best to you.
Avatar n tn does any one have graves and is hyperactive during pregnancy?are you on meds?what kind?
Avatar f tn No - it is not preferred to take T3 containing products during pregnancy as T4 is the main thyroid hormone the baby depends on -- but it is important to take thyroid medications in pregnancy and the dose usually requires increase. Levothyroxine (synthroid, levoxyl, etc) is the standard of care during pregnancy with a goal TSH in the 0.3-2.0 range typically.
1398190 tn?1290292799 There should be no obstacle, from a thyroid standpoint, with trying for another pregnancy. The key issues are 1) to keep TSH in the 0.3-2.
Avatar n tn My question is regarding Synthroid dosages. Prior to pregnancy I was on .088mg which was a little high for me so I went back down to .075mg, now that I am pregnant I had my TSH checked at 4 weeks gestation and it was 4.5 and my OB said it was in normal range. I started feeling cold intolerance and my hair has been falling out so I bumped up to 0.088mg again and am having some issues with nervousness and racing heart at times.
Avatar m tn Do you have your last labs? other than just TSH? did they do Free T3 and Free T4? What level of synthroid were you on pre-pregnancy? I was on 100mcg pre-pregnancy and then bumped to 112mcg when i found out i was pregnant and stayed at that level the entire pregnancy.. I have heard and in my case the thyroid is somewhat stable during pregnancy, you supply the babies thyroid hormone the first 8 - 10 weeks.
Avatar n tn Thank You for your advice. Would my synthroid need to be adjusted alot during pregnancy? I am on 150 mcg now. And does that dose stay the same will trying to concieve?
Avatar n tn I got pregnant again in the fall of 2006. During my pregnancy, my tsh and free t4 levels stayed fine, but my total t3 went high. I delivered in July '07 and have not been able to get my t3 back down completely. I spoke with my endo and he suggested switching me to the t4/t3 combo (synthroid and cytomel) since the armour isn't giving me enough t3 anymore. I take armour once a day now.
Avatar f tn Increase in thyroid meds can be 20 - 40% of the prepregnancy dose. it is normal to have to readjust monthly during the pregnancy and testing should be monthly. Also your doctor should be testing FT3 and FT4 and making sure that meds are adjusted to keep them in the upper 1/3 of the reference range. Best wishes and let us know how you go.
Avatar f tn With future pregnancy attempts, keep TSH in the 0.4.2.0 range when trying to conceive and during pregnancy. With the history of graves ask OB to check TSI (Graves antibody) in early third trimester -- if VERY high, there is a risk of neonatal graves (although this is very rare).
20922415 tn?1661860103 During the reproductive years, the pituitary gland in the brain generates hormones (follicle-stimulating hormone [FSH] and luteinizing hormone [LH]) that cause a new egg to mature and be released from its ovarian follicle each month. As the follicle develops, it produces the sex hormones estrogen and progesterone, which thicken the lining of the uterus called the endometrium.
Avatar f tn However, even more important is to test FT3 and FT4 and these should be at least mid-range or upper 1/2 of the range. During pregnancy numbers should be kept at least mid or upper half of the range by adjust ing meds. If your FT3 and FT4 aree ok and your doctor clears you go ahead. No need to be at normal for a certain time before trying. Just regular monitoring and adjusting as necessary. If you do get pregnant you need to test immeidately and probably increase meds about 20%.
Avatar f tn I take synthroid and I'm pregnant my midwife says that the baby is small so I can't the week I am suppose to be I'm actually (2 or 3 weeks behind) is that normal?
Avatar m tn s look at TSH being less than 2 - at least between 1 and 2 during pregnancy she needs to have her bloods tested and levels checked at least 3 times during the pregnancy once for each trimester - but more often if levels are not ideal - had my little one 8 months ago with thyroid problems - hope this helps - let her have her levels checked asap and find a Dr preverably a ENDo that can help - some GP's don't have a clue how to treat you during pregnancy. All the best.
2180858 tn?1337716153 A person with diagnosed AI (where adrenals do not function at all) does take cortef during pregnancy - and works with their endo and gyne about dosing. After all, pregnancy is a stress on the body and and the cortisol is needed to live. Are you under the care of an endo?
Avatar f tn This is my second pregnancy. I never wooried about my hypothyroid problem during my first pregnancy because i was on thyroid meds and had my levels in range. This time, i am off my meds and found that am pregnant only near the end of first trimester, which makes me feel so guilty. Thanks for all your inputs.
Avatar m tn 0, but we have recognized that a slighly low TSH is better than a slightly high one and we know that during the first part of pregnancy a TSH can be very low without problems.
Avatar f tn This is low risk with these TSH levels, but ideally the TSH should be in the 0.3-2.0 range during pregnancy. We test every 5 weeks usually and with this scenario would increase to 100mcg. Your doctor is on the right track.
