Common Questions and Answers about Synthroid bipolar

synthroid

Avatar m tn I,ve been married for 12 years to a woman who I have always thought to be bipolar. Major mood swings, verbal abuse, contolling and manipulative behavior, lying and an overall sense of unhappiness. I have just learned that she is being treated for thyroid disorder (hypothyroidism) and is taking Synthroid for treatment. She still acts the same as above but now even more amplified. She is so irritable and depressed that I think she might be crazy. Does Hypothyroidism relate to Bipolar Disorder ?
556500 tn?1222338630 Yes, meds can cause symptoms of bipolar, especially steroids--but usually for those who are prone to becoming bipolar. I had steroids several times with no bipolar symptoms before actually developing obvious hypomania later in life. BUT, you could be an exception. Lamictal is fairly activating, which would explain the anxiety. Depacote is usually somewhat of a downer. Even if you did have bipolar, there are other medications to try that may not make you feel as crappy.
Avatar f tn does thyroid have any thing to do with being bipolar ? or vise versa i have had severe depression mania and one phycosis episode and medication seems to make me worse it does nothing for me my thyroid never seems to b right on synthroid from tsh levels being really high to real low just curious any suggestions?
Avatar f tn Since the late 1980's I have been diagnosed as hypothyroid. I have given synthroid and tried armour. I always feel worse when I take the hormones. I am been diagnosed as bipolar since the late 80's. I take 450 mg. of lithium ER, 150 mg of Wellbutrin twice daily, Klonopin 1 mg twice a day for panic attacks and Inderal 2 times a day for panic attacks. In 2001, my weight had ballooned to almost 300 lbs. I had a roux-en-y gastric bypass performed with much success.
Avatar n tn t know what my results were before the cytomel, but I have bipolar and my Dr. wanted to address my thyroid problem thinking that was why I was still depressed and lack of energy. I am on Symbtax 6-25mg for bipolar, ritalin 60mg & concerta 72mg. All I know is my family Dr. said my thyroid was a little off, so my psychiatrist had the results faxed to him and he put me on cytomel right away. Now my family Dr.
Avatar m tn My daughter was diagnosed as having bipolar disorder. Before she was 18 she was on synthyroid. That means hypothyroid right? Well she came home from the hospital after being in the behavioral uniit with susicidal thoughts. The morning after she got home I went to wake her to give her her meds and she was dead. At first of course they looked for overdosing. When that came out negative they looked for medical reasons. The autopsy came back as cause of death being hyperthyroidism.
Avatar f tn In studies Synthroid treats bipolar depression and is used for that purpose. Lexapro is of course a standard anti-depressent. But something is either worsening the depression or not working. Speak to your psychiatrist about it. Ask them what's going on and they can determine whether its something physical, a medication side effect or the medications not working. But do speak to them about it and perhaps they should consult with the doctor who is prescribing the synthroid as well.
Avatar f tn of Synthroid in the hospital by the surgeon, and also given my other medications which I am on, Nexium for acid reflux, Topomax, Lamictal, Wellbutrin and Imovane for bipolar. All I was told was that I was to take my Synthroid at the same time each morning, which I continued to do. I was to see my Endrocrinoligist (for the first time following my surgery) of April 22.
Avatar f tn Actually the family member who has cyclothymia had hot flashes before the onset of menopause and has thyroid problems as well and has to take a minor dose of synthroid so it might be the first which is always worse in bipolar and the second which is a possibility.
Avatar n tn I have been taking synthroid for a few years for my hypothyroid. I also suffer from chronic headache and take depakote and elavil every day as preventatives. I am worried if surgery could make my headaches worse? Is it possible? Any help would be appreciated.

Avatar f tn Approx. 22yrs ago had radioactive iodine treatment & on 100 mg synthroid 'til 2005. Then TSH low , also tired & depressed & frequent confusion & memory problems. Tests showed no longer any thyroid. Dr. lowered med. Then tried to convince me was bipolar, with testing me, but I refused Drs. dx, then referred me to psychiatrist. same scenario for pst 2-3 yrs re. the TSH. Current test still low TSH 0.184. Thyroglubin,Qn <10, antithyroglobiulin, Ab <20, T4 1.35, T3 128.
Avatar f tn I had a bad initial reaction to both 50 synthroid (heart racing within three days) and 25 synthroid (muscle weakness, shortness of breath, racing heart, difficulty swallowing, vertigo within five days) and decided to try armour thyroid since synthroid has a long half life and coming off of it was difficult because it made me very agitated and gave me mood swings.
Avatar n tn Help? I am on 125mcg of synthroid and want to add cytomel because of still suffering from fatigue and weight gain. My physician prescribed 25mcg of cytomel and said to discontinue the synthroid. I cannot get into an endo until Feb. and would like to combine the two but am not sure what doses to take reducing my synthroid and adding the cytomel?
Avatar m tn I was diagnosed as bipolar a year and a half ago. I received treatment there after, but have not shown much inprovement. Now i have read alot about hypothyroidism, its symtoms etc.; and now i feel that there are high chances that I may have hypothyroidism. ( Its bad that my psychiatrist never mentioned hypothyroidism and getting its possibility ruled out). Now i have taken a blood test for Ultra TSH, Free T4 and Free T3 levels.
Avatar f tn HI, i'm new to your posting. I am 12 years post cancer and have recieved synthroid, at varied dosages over the years and with THS so suppressed I would say I was off the chart. So here is my situation. I was diagnosed ADD and depression aobut five years ago. Ok, that sort of made sense. So on a stimulant and a anti-depressant. I continued to expereince low level of depression, anxiety, and muscle pain. I just continued with live just living with the diagnosis and medications.
Avatar f tn I started taking 75 mcg Synthroid and 6 weeks later my TSH is 0.15. Synthroid is lowered to 50 mcg and 6 weeks later TSH is 0.14. Synthroid is lowered to 25 mcg and 4 weeks later I was feeling just awful and scheduled an appt to talk to my doctor about coming off the medication since my hair had fallen out and my weight had flucuated so much within a 2 month time span. TSH test that day showed it at 6.3 - taken around 11am after breakfast and morning Synthroid dose.
Avatar n tn I have been hypothyroid for many years. I took 62.5 mg of Synthroid and 10 mcg of Cytomel with normal TSH. But, after testing low in vitamin D, and subsequently supplementing with D, my TSH increased and I began having symptoms of hypothyroidism. I might add that the vitamins were taken at opposite times of the day from the thyroid meds. My Synthroid was raised to 75 mcg and 10 mcg of Cytomel to accommodate the increasing TSH. However, I got symptoms of overstimulation.
200220 tn?1361951554 5-1.0. I am getting there. Hashimotos *****. It makes me feel like I am bipolar. I have extreme anxiety from this all after coming to halfway normal levels. My tsh was like a 7.7 in the hospital in may of this year, Has dropped drastically, 1.97 but I am not leveled yet. Just take it one day at a time and stay positive. I take a small dose of xanax when I need it and it helps me get through the rough days Also get your vitamins checked, and adrenals. You have been through a lot;0).
1619168 tn?1298833185 It is very hard being bipolar and i bet even harder having people around you not wanting to help you deal with the issues bipolar presents. With the negative things of bipolar come positives. bipolar people tend to be creative in what ever field such as artist, writing, singing, dancing and actors. and i bet you are talented in your area. What i find helpful in when i am feeling down and horrible, is to draw and paint and something to distract myself even if just for a few hours.
