I was recently diagnosed with hypothyroidism and I am wondering if anyone has this symptom. I have extremely painful pitting edema in my legs and they feel so heavy that I can hardly pick my leg up and walk. This has ruined my life for the last 9 months. I have a baby that is 11 months old and I haven't even been able to enjoy his life this far. I do not have insurance and I feel like the doctor I'm seeing at the clinic is not taking me serious.
so i have not been as active, my sleep schedule is messed up,all due to the depression, well i have also been on the computer ALOT lately, too much in fact, so my question is, i have been experiencing some edema from the calves down, it has become quite bothersome and is actually difficult to lift my legs as they feel so heavy, the swelling has gotton to the point that i have resorted to wearing my husbands flip-flops, and the tops of my feet actually feel bruised, i went to the doctors and was
Cytomel would be in addition to synthroid. Synthroid is only T4 and cytomel would be adding T3 to your regime. You may have a problem converting T4 to T3. My T4 would be perfect and I would be feeling horrible. I finally found a doctor who would check my free T3 and T4 and my T3 was at the bottom of the range so I am now on armour thyroid. I feel TONS better. It does take awhile to notice the changes but it has been worth the wait.
My doctor started me on a regimen of 150 mcg's of Synthroid two months ago. Within a half hour after taking the medication my ankles swell and I feel anxious and my head hurts. I told my endocronoligist my symptoms and he said that the symptoms would disappear. I went to my regular medical doctor and he gave me a water pill because he said I had edema and when the weather cooled down it would go away. Well the weather has cooled down and I still have the symptoms after taking the Synthroid.
I have been on Synthroid for forever and I don't know if there is a link here but my hands ALWAYS look puffy and swollen and full of fluid. Anyone else have this problem? Even my feet are slightly swollen but not as much as my hands.
The C4/C1 test was negative and the allergists were unable to determine the source of the edema. I have been tried on synthroid which was not effective. Please advise.
5mg, such a high dose. I am never NOT on some sort of synthetic hormone, whether it has been armour or synthroid but then i start the weight gain again, feel terrible and bang, the numbers of the tsh go up (or down depends on how you look at it) and i am having no activity. now this last weekend my legs and feet swelled up and i was taken to the ER. He said thyroid as all other tests ruled out bigger potential issues.
Within a month, I weaned down to 16mg (8mg, BID) and have been at that dose since then, only changing it to 16mg once a day as I continually forgot my afternoon dose. About 2-3 months into it, I started noticing marked ankle edema and mentioned it to my doctor in November. At my December appointment I showed him my 3-4+ pitting edema in my ankles/calves and he started me on 20mg Lasix daily (prn).
It's likely not related to thyroid cancer, but just swelling/edema from being off synthroid.
4) and my endo increased my dose to 100 mcg -but he wrote the script for Levothyroxine instead of Synthroid. I didn't think it a big deal because the Levo is just the generic for Synthroid, so I began taking it. It was like I wasn't taking any thyroid meds at all for about 1 1/2 weeks. I couldn't believe how cr@ppy, old, and depressed I felt. I was about to call my endo back and give him a piece of my mind when I suddenly began feeling much better.
I wake up in the morning and my feet just burn. Also, my knees are stiff with it. I'm on synthroid and just recently (3 days ago) switched from Zantac twice a day to Prilosec once a day. The fluid retention has been off and on but most recently it seems to be getting worse. The only thing that helps is to drink a million glasses of water a day and spend my life in the restroom. What could be causing this? Those are the only meds I take and I don't eat much sodium.
No one has any answers. I got better after taking florinef when starting the synthroid and rapidly improved. Another lady also posted on the board with the exact same set of symptoms. Importantly-no pretreatment edema at all- likely due to the protective effects of a collagen disorder (EDS III). Reduced interstitial space I believe thus much less water and poly saccaride buildup. see through skin, reduced skin thickness and so on.
He put me on 100 mcg of synthroid (brand name only) and I was extremely uncomfortable and unable to barely move due to pitted edema. The edema was to the point I was unable to releave my baldder and took lasix (40mg) to get some comfort. The doctors stopped this and told me no more for it was not working to my advantage. Now on 100 mcg for 3 weeks I can move a bit easier and breathing is getting better, bladder issue is improving.
I think I already know the answer after reading the hundreds of posts on this board, but after taking .50 mcgs of Synthroid for only one week I have gained five pounds and a grossly distended abdomen. I went to my GYN to begin with for hormonal tests because of sudden weight gain, thinking I was menopausal. My TSH was 5.68...not extremely high, but she suggested I try Synthroid to see if it helped.
She gave me Synthroid to take for a month and come back in to retest for blood. I noticed over the weekend my feet were swelling and they make a imprint if you press long enough. My feet are not that swollen that you would notice but enough to make a small sock imprint. My leg muscles hurt like I worked out too much and my joints in my fingers ache. I am 40 years old. I walk everyday for an hour and I eat healthy now and for the past 3 weeks.
Meds Synthroid .150mcg and multivitamin. Last 12 months, experiencing pitting edema at ankles, Starts unilateral left ankle becomes bilateral after a few weeks if not tx w Lasix 20mg bid. SOB, tachecardic, sweats (similar to menopausal). Last 3 weeks have had negative angiogram, all labs negative including autoimmune panel, pet/ct negative other than atelectasis or scarring in the posterior costophrenic sulci bilateral.
I had all the symptoms fatigue, dry skin, weight gain, and swelling. I was started on Synthroid 25mcgs and am now on Synthroid 75mgs. Additionally, Cytomel was added 3 months ago at 5 mcgs and increased 6 weeks ago to 25mcgs. I know that I feel much better with the addition of the T3. I have much more energy. My current labs were FT3 2.85, FT4 .9, and TSH .009. I had a little beat of heat intolerance but it has since past.
I am now 43, overweight, but have always had very trim legs and ankles. I have hashimotos thyroiditis and take synthroid, had a complete hysterectomy 10 years ago and take premarin and estrace. I have had my blood pressure medication changed countless times because it keeps going up. I recently was on 20 mg. vasotec twice a day, 20 mg. catapress, 360 mg. Covera HS, and 20 mg. diazide. My legs started becoming very bloated and my bp was 165/110.

She suddenly has unexplained edema and swelling of her fingers, toes, and mid-section (pelvic area). She's had a CT scan of the pelvis and abdomen (negative) and pregnancy has been ruled out as well--everything tests out fine. She has thyroid disease, for which she is on Synthroid, and depression (hence the zoloft). Has anyone ever had symptoms of edema or swelling with extended use of Zoloft or ever heard of this type of event?
Hi there ~ Well I was recently diagnosed with a hypoechogenic thyroid nodule and referred to an Endocrinologist. She did an ultrasound and said the thyroid itself look fine but we want to watch the nodule and if it grows we will proceed with FNA and biopsy. Fair enough. Nodule - monitor - Got it!
Posted by Jeneane on June 21, 1999 at 23:09:30 Hi, no stranger to antidepressants myself (from Deseryl to Prosac to Paxil to Zoloft to Celexa), I am posting this for my sister. She is 45 yrs old and is on 50 mg Zoloft a day and has been taking it for a couple of years now. She suddenly has unexplained edema and swelling of her fingers, toes, and mid-section (pelvic area).
, TSH wasn’t significantly elevated - basically, the rheostat in the hypothalamus is set too low), when you add Synthroid (T4), the hypothalamus starts to suppress your own production of T4 to compensate. At sub-optimal doses of Synthroid, you could actually end up with less than you started with (and subsequently gain weight, develop edema). Columbia Thyroid Clinic uses body weight in pounds to determine approximate goal dose of Synthroid in micrograms (e.g.
-Wake up in the morning muscles stiff and sore, especially fingers -Significant edema in legs at night, and in the extremeties in the AM -Headaches (intermittent) -Horseness (much worse when teaching school) -Muscle pain (around joints, but doesn't seem to eminate from joints themselves) -Muscle weakness -Fatigue -IBS issues -Cold all the time -Trouble sleeping, wake up Current Thyroid levels after starting Synthroid 25mcg T3 total 151; T4 1.5 Thyroid levels before Synthroid: TSH: 1.
HI HAS ANYONE HAD A PROBLEM WITH FLUID RETENSION AND EDEMA WHEN THEIR LEVELS ARE OUT OF RANGE? MY ENDOCRINOLOGIST HAS JUST RAISED MY SYNTHROID AND I JUST HAD MY LEVELS CHECKED AGAIN I AM WAITING FOR RESULTS. I WAS NOT SYMPTOMATIC WHEN I WENT FOR MY CHECK UP NOW I HAVE DEVELOPED SOME SYMPTOMS EDEMA FEELING COLD.
"Definition of Edema Edema is another term for water retention. Hands, feet and other body parts swell and look puffy when the body's tissues retain too much fluid. Causes of Edema Many health conditions and medications, as well as menstrual changes and pregnancy, can cause edema. The thyroid disease most commonly linked with edema is hypothyroidism, a condition in which the thyroid is under-active and the body's metabolism is slowed.
Dr Lupo: I am on 150 synthroid & 5 cytomel (twice per day). My labs in early Aug were: TSH .02 FT4 1.32 (.58-1.64) FT3 3.48 (2.14-3.91) My endo is not that concerned about the lowish tsh as my free t’s are not out of range. I didn’t feel perfect, but I guess manageable at the time these labs were done. I have since started with a lot of hypo symptoms….fatigue, very dry skin, puffy eye lids, edema, dry eyes.
