Common Questions and Answers about Synthroid and cholesterol

synthroid

Avatar n tn My total cholesterol was 548 2 months ago increased synthroid from 50 to 100 now cholesterol is 240 and we have increased synthroid to 125.No cholesterol pills just synthrois increase. Good Luck.My blood pressure is high as well. I have hypo with hashimoto's.
907968 tn?1292622204 Since then I started Synthroid and then switched to Levothroxin and my Cholesterol numbers changed considerably. What I need to know is, Does thyroid medication change Cholesterol numbers? Could Synthroid change them one way and Levothroxin change them the other way? There is a timing connection with the medication and the cholesterol numbers which is why I'm asking.
Avatar f tn Nineteen years ago I had my thyroid removed due to cancer, but my parathyroid glands remain. During the first months after surgery and until my Synthroid dosage was regulated, I suffered from a lot of cramping, especially in my hands and chest, but also in my legs and feet. For the past ten years or so, I have stayed on a daily dosage of 75 MCG. of Synthroid.
Avatar m tn Is that total cholesterol? If so, take a look at the HDL, LDL and Triglycerides individually, and see what they are. As noted above, total cholesterol is a calculation of all three. And as goolarra said, it's more important raise HDL than to lower LDL. Do you have tests for the active thyroid hormones, Free T3 and Free T4? Those are so much more important than TSH.
Avatar n tn I did another physical 3 wks ago, and it showed my TSH levels off and my Cholesterol as 276 with high LDL cholesterol also. My HDL level was high, which is great. I exercise and eat very healthy. My question is, if Sertraline caused the hypothyroidism, which I have found several articles that imply it could've, will stopping the medication automatically reverse my subclinical hypothyroidism without taking medicine to offset my thyroid levels?
Avatar n tn To: Dr. Lupo Thank you for the reply to my question on the 26th. I have Hashimoto's Thyroiditis and have been searching for an answer to the detection of a nodule 3 years ago. Now I have two. I was diagnosed hypothyroid since the birth of my child and on synthroid for 16 years. High TPO's and the nodule detection have sent me to various "specialists" that have increased my meds for reduction purposes. Questions have gone unanswered.
Avatar f tn I have been hypo for a while and never wanted to take levo but I changed my mind because my cholesterol and triglycerides were too high to chance it so I began taking synthroid. Been on it for 2 mo. I also take lots of fish oil, primrose oil, D,B12, biotin, zinc etc, etc. I feel like a pill popper! Anyway, I don't like synthroid because my hair began falling out at an alarming rate, I'm getting bad leg cramps and can't sleep well. This has happened since taking synthroid.
Avatar f tn I have been taking 25 mcg for approximately two years. Doc prescribed it for me, not because of hypo symptoms, but because my cholesterol was a bit high. Her quote: "Let's thump your thyroid as see if it helps with your cholesterol". She said thyroid labs showed I was "on the low end of normal", but "normal" none the less. Note: Cholesterol was at 218, bad rather high, good very low. Being completely ignorant to these things, I trusted her judgement.
Avatar n tn I am just wondering that is the hypothyrodism the cause for both high level of uric acd and cholesterol. I am a 56 years old post-menopause woman and had never have thyroid and gout problem before. However, the uric acid and tsh level were just getting higher and higher every year for the past 2 years. I am afraid if I don't get any treatment now, it may later develop gout and other symptoms. What type of treatment should I have now ?
Avatar f tn I remembered I had a cholesterol form and I have booked to have a test done to check my cholesterol levels. My question is what should the levels be? Also how is the cholesterol if it is high going to affect me, what are the symptoms? How do I get the levels down if they come back high?
Avatar m tn High cholesterol and LDL (hyperlipidemia) are often indicators of thyroid disease and subside with proper thyroid medication. For instance, my normally good low cholesterol shot up while I was fighting to be diagnosed. I was very symptomatic but had normal 1.2 TSH. I told my doctor that if the combination T4/T3 therapy I requested (when T4 alone did nothing for my symptoms, which got worse) was appropriate for me, my cholesterol and LDL would lower without a change in diet or exercise.
Avatar f tn I am getting confused at where my TSH levels should end up when they rise and once I am on Synthroid. I have copies of past blood work from before I was having problems with Graves disease symptoms and my TSH seemed okay for me between 1.7 to 2.5. I know at those times I felt fine; my only issue was when my TSH was 2.5 or higher that my cholesterol levels (LDL) were out of range. TSH over 2.5 for me I always had hypothyroid symptoms in the past.
Avatar f tn After feeling tired for what feels like forever and switching doctors, I finally got some test results. I know that TSH isn't a reliable indicator and I know that my FT3 is lower than the range and T4 is within range but so low that symptoms might show up. Here are the results: TSH: 1.21 (range is 0.20-4) Free T4 is 11.3. (10.0-25.0 pmol/L) Free T3 is 3.03. (3.5 - 6.
Avatar f tn cholesterol 233 and LDL 166. They are putting me on Crestor for cholesterol. My concern is the thyroid levels. I just get so tired and put on so much weight when the levels are off. Anyone have any suggestions?
Avatar f tn I have never had any issues like this and all he could tell me about the cholesterol and hemoglobin alc and HS CRP is it could be my age and as we get older these problems arise. I have been following a high protein (lean) low fat 1,000 calorie a day diet for over a month now and have only lost 5 lbs. I have been trying to increase exercise by walking every evening but not much luck with weight loss. The blood work has just surprised me.
907968 tn?1292622204 I had to get off of synthroid because it was causing me acid reflux so bad. It was not a problem before synthroid, and went away when I stopped synthroid, so yes it was the synthroid. I am sure you have, but just to double check...have you checked out all they symptoms for hypothryoidism? Constipation is one of them along with many other gastro issues. I am a member of that club, albeit, unwillingly.
Avatar f tn I just my physical done two weeks ago and my doctor called me back telling me that my cholesterol is very high and that she needed to increased my synthroid (thyroid replacement medicine) from 150 mcg to 175 mcg. The reason for the increase she says was because my thyroid is "sluggish"? So I asked her if my thyroid being sluggish has anything to do with my high cholesterol and her answer was no. Could this be related? Isn't part of the thyroid function to control your metabolism?
Avatar n tn Synthroid is 125 (micro-mg) 1 tablet a day. I take my Synthroid early in the morning and metmorphin after meals and lipitor in the night. It looks like for the last 3-4 months my weight has come to 55kg. I think last year my weight was 59kg. So what could be the reason for my weight loss? I walk everyday, my diet is good and healthy, my times for eating meals are very much on time, I am a strict vegetarian, milk, once a week tofu are the main sources of protiens.
Avatar f tn I initally felt peppy and more motivated and awake and over all bright for about 3 weeks after i got on synthroid and now i am worse off than i was before..weight gain is coming back and falling asleep and irritability..... How can my free t-3 and t-4 barely change (i mean BARELY) and my TSH got from normal to HYPER values and still i fell like i am Hypo which i never really was according to blood work (also weirdness is BEFORE menopause i was actually 2.
Avatar f tn Thank you for your response. I'll look for that story and the report. FYI, I've been tested for Celiac and, happily, am negative. The T3&4 readings are free t3&4. I'm already on a statin for cholesterol and have been for years. Guess there's nothing like too much Synthroid to do the trick. Thanks!
Avatar f tn Is it strange though that for 7 years I have had zero symptoms related to thyroid and then I start Synthroid and now I have all these symptoms? Or do I have the symptoms now because my thyroid went from 3.64 to 0.596? I feel I shouldn't have even started the Synthroid if I was symptom free...but I had read somewhere that if you have Thyroid Antibodies which I do, a low level of Synthroid can keep the Hashimotos at bay or something to that effect.
