The worst problem with them is trying to stop taking them, which can be hard to impossible, but of course many will have side effects. Lexapro and Celexa are notorious for causing head pressure, and often when you take a drug this long the effects can be permanent. To start the taper, I would recommend trying to take ½ tablet (5mg) daily for approximately 2 weeks, seeing if you have any withdrawal symptoms and then continue the taper by stopping the medication completely. If you experience side effects at either taper step, you could do a more gradual taper of cutting the tablet into quarters (1/4 – yielding four 2.5 mg sections) and starting with ¾ (7.5mg) for two weeks, then ½ tablet (5mg) for two weeks, then ¼ (2.

The most common intial side effect of these kinds of meds is an increase in anxiety, it typically starts to improve around the two week mark. I always advise trying to stick it out the full 4-6 weeks to get past those initial side effects and really be able to properly assess if the medication will start working for you.

Two possibilities. Once is that, if you were anxious before taking Lexapro and you now have the same problem having stopped it, then it's just back. These meds don't cure depression or anxiety or treat their causes; they just tamp down symptoms. If you haven't solved the underlying problem, it's not only still there, but can be worse because your brain is now used to working with a drug and needs time to relearn how to function without one.
The first couple years of taking Lexapro I had no side effects. For the last year +, I have had abdominal pain, gas, heartburn & diarrhea almost daily. My Dr. just want to give me more med's for the symptoms (prilosec, etc). I take Pepcid and GasX almost every day.
Reducing the dosage of Lexapro will make the med ineffective as you need a minimum dose for the med to work. So if the side effects are that bad that you can[t take the required dosage then you will want to stop as you are wasting your time taking Lexapro. Of course talk to your doctor about stopping first. Some meds you need to wean yourself off of not just stop. But in this case since you haven't been taking it long you probably won't have to do that. Again consult with your doctor.
