Avatar f tn here in the uk many people get symbicort for asthma , I have been on it for around a year , and I was only diagnosed with copd a cuople of weeks ago . I found it helped me enormously, it is probably an issue of cost why they dont give it to you , as each inhaler costs around £70...

Avatar f tn Another doctor gave me a sample of Symbicort after my COPD diagnosis. I took one dose and went back to him the next day. I had been awake all night and nearly lost my mind. Apparently I have a reaction to steroids. He then put me on Spiriva (along with my albuterol) and I haven't had any problem. This cough syrup I was given has Dexamethasone in it. Wikpedia had this to say about that: "Dexamethasone is a potent synthetic member of the glucocorticoid class of steroid drugs.
Avatar f tn I would like to know whether I should use the inhalers they gave me (spiriva and seretide) for my condition, COPD, irrespective of whether I get some relief from them. Can they slow down the lung deterioration process? Should I really go on inhaling for ever?... in other words, if these medicines are only - or mostly - intended to make me feel better (which they don't), can I stop taking them? I perceive them as a nuisance and the result of a pharmaceutically oriented approach.

1507301 tn?1289936394 There can be very serious side effects and are not recommended for COPD unless nothing else works, and, even then, only for short periods of time. I am at the lower end of moderate COPD and do not use steroids. That is because they almost killed me. I use a nebulizer (albuterol and ipratropium), and take natural anti-inflammatories and an antihistamine for allergies.
Avatar n tn I have wet macular degeneration as well as COPD and my ophthamalogist theorizes that the weird "blisters" that are appearing at the site of the oozing veins may be caused by the steroid content of my asthma medication ( namely Spiriva). So he has asked me to change to something that doesn't contain any steroids. My pulmonologist has suggested I add floridil to my albuterol nebulizer.
620048 tn?1358018235 One of our members, Rena, also has COPD and has had some very intensive treatment for it. Perhaps she or some of our members who have had things help can speak up here. I'm glad you chimed in. We don't want to forget anyone. You're a member of the Mob Family now, and there are penalties for being absent. Definitely call your pulmonary doctor and ask if everything is being tried to help you out. Also let your primary doc know you are just not doing well.

Avatar m tn Hello. I am a 44 year-old firefighter. In 2009 I was diagnosed with sarcoidosis. At the time of diagnosis my FEV was 70%. My spirometry was fine before that since 2003 when I joined. After a CT scan the doctor said the sarc was no longer active. I took up cycling for the next four years built my FEV to 80%. In 2014 I had shortness of breath. The doctor told me it was Bronchospams. 3 weeks later it had subsided.
Avatar n tn Yes, there are medicines for COPD, but please do not start with prednisone or inhaled steroids. The side effects can be dreadful. I had to get off them because they were killing me, literally. Advair is the wrost because it also contains salmeterol. There are albuterol inhalers which help a lot. Albuterol can also be used in a nebulizer and there are very small portable ones that fit into your purse. You appear to have chronic bronchitis. The very best treatment for this symptom is Vitamin B5.
Avatar f tn I am 65 years old, I too have the burning, tiny poking sensation in my ankles, accompanied by the redness and either dry flaky skin or a slight rash. I have had this for several years. I was recently diagnosed with COPD. While researching COPD I found these symptoms listed in the COPD symptoms.by inputting key words COPD symptoms into Google..........J.
Avatar m tn I have shortness of breath and pain in the lung/ back area. I am on spiriva, symbicort, ventolin, levalbuteral, and 800 ibuprofen. This has been going on for 5 months. X- ray was clear two months ago. All blood labs and cultures clear. My doctors do not know what to do for me? I'm constantly tired and in pain and short of breath. I'm 25, and should not be this sick!
Avatar f tn t give me details but she told me not to be too concerned as it would be very hard to do these tests when you have a cold (i suspect it was a monitor that can test you for COPD) . She has put me on Ventolin (to use as required) and Symbicort (one puff in the morning and one in the evening) to assist me with my breathing until I recover from this cold.
Avatar f tn DO I ALSO NEED TO BE TAKING SYMBICORT OR ADVAIR? WHAT CAN I DO TO TRY TO MANAGE MY COPD BESIDES QUIT SMOKING WHICH I HAVE CUT DOWN TO A HALF A PACK A DAY. WHICH IS ALL THAT I CAN ACCOMPLISH NOW. WHAT CAN I BE DOING TO BETTER CONTROL MY BREATHING WITH WHAT I HAVE ON HAND?
Avatar m tn you need to stop smoking asap. I've been on prednisone too- what is your dose? I was on 30mg/day and am not sure it's safe for the liver and for 1-2 weeks. my FEV1 is 73% and hasn't gone up even on the prednisone and symbicort. you should contact your doctor asap.
1422961 tn?1282587806 I am 49, have had COPD for over 15 years, and had a wedge resecction done in Jan. 2008. Every time i have my 02 checked it is excellent, but i am always at rest. (I wish they would check it when i walk in the door gasping for air). At times i get headaches from just walking through the grocery store and have to use my hands to 'crawl' up the stairs. I am on disability and want to stay off oxygen as long as i can, but i can't go on like this much longer.
1086884 tn?1328640455 I now suffer from COPD and with the medication I have been on (Advair, Symbicort) I still have trouble breathing but I do exercise. I ride a stationary bike and use the treadmill each evening and it has helped with my breathing. Good luck.
