341655 tn?1240368839 what is the difference between the imitrex injections and pills? Which is more effective and prescribed more?
Avatar m tn There are lots of triptans on the market and imitrex is one of the first, the generic name is called sumatriptan and it is what they will give you in the hospital, but by injecteion, if you ever go in for a migraine... they won't give you any other triptan at the hospital usually because sumatriptan by injection is pretty much the best triptan out there!! But, the names of some other triptans are maxalt, axert, zomig (like i take) ... etc.
Avatar f tn tachycardia (or fast heart beat), labile blood pressure, dizziness, flushing, tremor, etc. Since you are also on Synthroid (or levothyroxine), you may experience faster heart rates if the dose is too high for you. I do not know if your heart rate readings are due to nortriptyline, combination with Synthroid, or something else. However, I strongly recommend for you to consult your provider as soon as possible.
518798 tn?1295212279 I switched to sumatriptan tablets from injections because my insurance would no longer provide coverage. I have found that the tablets work as well as the injections. HOWEVER, the tablets take an hour to work as compared with fifteen minutes for the injection. I get a migraine every day, and as soon as I feel it coming on, I take a sumatriptan tablet. As you might guess, I too have been wondering if I am dependent on the medication! I would like to hear from others who use it as often as I do.
2124631 tn?1335166144 Flushing, sensations of tingling/numbness/prickling/heat, weakness, drowsiness, or dizziness may occur. If any of these effects persist or worsen, notify your doctor or pharmacist promptly.Remember that your doctor has prescribed this medication because he or she has judged that the benefit to you is greater than the risk of side effects. Many people using this medication do not have serious side effects.Chest/jaw/neck tightness can commonly occur shortly after using sumatriptan.
Avatar f tn Person who schedules procedures for the surgeon's office gave me the list and told me to check it with what I take. I specifically asked about the Imitrex, but she wasn't sure. Pharmacist said sumatriptan wasn't on list so it should be okay, but I'm still not sure. My mistake about naproxen. It is on the list as naprosyn. So I won't take any aleve. Thanks.
Avatar f tn I am so sorry for what you have been going through. I started having migraines when I was 23. They couldn't diagnose me for 8 years because I had no migraine and had vomiting all night (only at night) and abdominal pain. The neurologist did an electroencephalogram and found it was a migraine. I was put on doxepin for a year and that helped but then it didn't work so they finally put me on Klonopin and it went away but then in my 30's it changed to severe migraine and auras.
Avatar f tn Some people have success treating migraine with ibuprofin (such as advil). For me nothing works except sumatriptan (such as imitrex) for you need a prescription.
Avatar n tn t get imitrex tablets, get the imitrex or generic nasal spray or imitrex or generic injection OR treximex tablets but NOT imitrex tablets. - Zolmitriptan. brand name Zomig. this is what i use. (although i have used all of them at some point) don't get the tablets... like imitrex, the tablets don't work. But, the nasal spray DOES work incredibly well and this is what is usually prescribed anyway. - Almotriptan. brand name Axert. a very powerful triptan tablet.
1103688 tn?1257894552 Although, you only mentioned one triptan that you had the reaction to, and that was Imitrex, aka Sumatriptan. Not all triptans are made with the same ingredients and so not all triptans will have the same side-effects. For example, Imitrex is the only triptan that is also a Sulfa drug (many people have Sulfa allergies). Imitrex is known to cause the side-effect you mentioned in some people, the severe heart palpitations.
1102283 tn?1257817472 But, due to cost constraints, I would suggest getting a prescription for the cheapest generic triptan which is called Sumatriptan tablets. The Sumatriptan tablets work well for many people, so if they work well for you then that would be excellent and you can just stick to them as your only prescription. Although, due to the extremely low bioavailability of Sumatriptan tablets, they do not always work well for everyone (although Sumatriptan is still the most prescribed triptan on the market).
Avatar f tn I would like to know how long after taking Sumatriptan/Imitrex could any drowsiness side effect be considered to have worn off for when I get a migraine away from home and have no reasonable option to get home without driving myself. A few years ago, I got a migraine while some distance from home. I do not drive with a migraine.
768044 tn?1294223436 So, he prescribed me Imitrex Injection (Sumatriptan Injection). I dropped off the prescription at the pharmacy after the appointment and they told me I could pick it up tomorrow morning. He said he also prescribed Imitrex Injection for his cluster headache patients too. I had a migraine tonight but it was a normal migraine and my zomig+naproxen+analgesic cream took care of it. So all in all today was a pretty good day.
Avatar f tn s typical for me to have migraines on the back of my head rather than my left/right side of my head. Sumatriptan/Imitrex will work, but not how it used to. My migraines are worse than how it used to be, and I'm scared to take sumatriptan because 1) It may or may not work. 2) if it doesn't work, I am now 1 sumatriptan short. My gut feeling says something isn't right, but I don't know how to go about it. Yesterday morning I woke up around 4am with another migraine.
Avatar f tn I have migraines a few times a month (2-3) and take 50mg generic imitrex with an OTC NSAID. So after having two different doctors tell me that I need to get an "official diagnosis" of migraines from a neurologist, I finally saw a neuro. yesterday. To say that I am confused and angry is an understatement! For $250 he told me that I have mixed migraines/tension headaches and to reduce my stress and that my migraines would improve or lessen.
Avatar f tn There are plenty of migraine headaches in the market today and treatment is usually trial and error for some. Imitrex or sumatriptan is used to treat migraine headaches, with or without aura, in adults. This has been effective to some headache sufferers. If it does not help with your symptoms, inform your doctor for a change of medication. Take care and do keep us posted.
Avatar f tn Long time migrainer.
Avatar m tn P.S. - sumatriptan (imitrex) and other triptans (I liked zomeg best) can abort an attack in 5-10 minutes if your husband's ever last that long, but recent research shows that using triptans more than twice a week or so will increase the number of attacks and the pain level. It's losing favor fast among sufferers. As the good Dr said, oxygen is best, 100%, 15 lpm, with a non-rebreather mask. It's effective for 60+% of sufferers depending on the study.
768044 tn?1294223436 ve tried triptan wise though is sumatriptan by injection? Imitrex makes an injection and there are also a few generic sumatriptan injections on the market now too I think. For some people if all the triptans don't work then sumatriptan by injection will work for them, even if sumatriptan by tablet and nasal spray was useless to them. Let me know if you've tried it before... if not, might be something to ask the neurologist about at your appointment...
Avatar f tn What type of headaches did the doctors say you had? This sounds like you might be suffering from "cluster headaches". Cluster headaches are the worst pain that exists pretty much... so, your description of being shot makes me think of that. Also, they are on one side of the head, and usually around the eye. So... the starting point of your headache sounds like it is in the right place for a cluster headache. Also, them waking you up in the night sounds like cluster headaches too.
Avatar n tn I am very sorry about your pain and suffering. It sounds neurological to me such a migraine. They can be every day and the pain is intolerable. Have you had an electroencepalogram (EEG) or MRI? I think the EEG would show a migraine or migraine variant. I have a migraine variant and it took years to diagnose as well. You are on the right track in trying the sumatriptan (Imitrex). Sometimes Imitrex doesn't work for everyone.
1088430 tn?1259159773 But, he was so nice to volunteer a whole box of samples of not only relpax, but max(something) dissolves in your mouth. Also, he gave me a new RX for Imitrex since they have a generic and it'll only cost me $5 now to refill instead of a $50 co-pay! He's the NICEST doctor I've ever seen! Thanks again for the info! The botox thing interests me (: Not sure how it works in Canada. But, have you heard of cranial sacral massage? I was researching alt. migraine stuff and found the info.
