Suboxone and babies

Common Questions and Answers about Suboxone and babies

suboxone

Avatar f tn I had the experience and the CYS were really nice and understanding talking about the suboxone treatment.
Avatar n tn Babies have been successfully nursed by mothers on Suboxone. I am not sure why they said that he was in withdrawals, since most babies born to moms on Suboxone do not show much withdrawals. I can only assume that they have his best interests in heart. Now that he is on morphine, he needs to be tapered down or he will truly be in withdrawals (from morphine). They certainly should not be upping his dose, but lowering it. Please question them on their reasoning.
Avatar f tn A lot of stuff is bad for babies. But I wouldn't be taking it if my doctor didnt completely reassure me it's better then not taking anything at all. And the Tylenol in hydrocodone is what makes that worse to take then suboxone especially cause I was taking 11 pills a day. I've get ultrasounds every week and baby girl is super healthy. Already bigger then average at 36 weeks.
Avatar f tn I have read things about women taking Suboxone while being pregnant and their babies are perfectly healthy, but on the other hand I have heard that the babies go through withdrawals at times too. I have also read that if I"m just cut off of the Suboxone cold turkey without being tappered off of it that it could cause a miscarraige.
Avatar n tn Suboxone and subutex are considered category C medications, this means that enough research has not been done on pregnant woman to know what the effects on the fetus will be. You absolutely need to tell your OB, they have a tendency to switch moms to methadone or a shorter-acting opiate as more info is known about effects. No one can say for sure if sub is safe to be on during pregnancy, so the sooner you talk to your doctor the better off you and your baby will be. Best of luck to you.
Avatar f tn Thanks for your response! But no methadone is not the only safe method. I was on a methadone clinic for 2 years and it was awful. Every one calls it liquid handcuffs. They hold out on giving you your dose for any little reason and they don't want to see you succeed. I tried to detox off and the dr there said he didn't think I was ready because I was too young. I was 28 at the time and hadn't given one dirty urine the whole 2 years I was there.
Avatar f tn Hi Moonsyne, Taking that first step is courageous. You should be proud of yourself. I am glad that you are doing that for yourself and your babies. Because I do not have an addiction I don't know how much information I can offer you. Suboxone and Subutex (brand names) contains a medication called buprenorphine. There is a new article that states it is an "opiate agonist/antagonist and a very effective pain medication for appropriate patients.
3060236 tn?1340594292 Ok I have been on suboxone for 7 years ..that is right 7 years and before that 5 years of oxycontin OC and heroin. total of 12 years of substances. I just found out that I have cancer and will need a hysterectomy in a dew days. The oncologist put me on 30mg of Oxycontin OP a week ago while I get the suboxone out of my system. I need it out of my system in order to be treated for pain. (I had a C- section on subutex and it was HELL!!!
217599 tn?1202850952 they are tapering her off of the methadone, and of course she is going through hell. does anyone here know if suboxone can be used for infants?
Avatar f tn You might want to consider to be slowly tapered off of the Suboxone to allow yourself and the baby to be completely drug free by the time of delivery, but many women have had healthy pregnancies and nursed their babies on Suboxone or Subutex. It is especially important to nurse if you continue to take Suboxone through your pregnancy to avoid abrupt withdrawal in the baby post delivery. Baby will then slowly wean off of the drug as it weans gently off your breast.
Avatar f tn It would be best for both you and the baby to be gently tapered off of Suboxone while you are still pregnant, so that you are both drug free by the time of the delivery and your baby will not need to go through any withdrawals at all. Even though babies have been safely delivered to mothers taking Suboxone and nursed by those mothers while on Suboxone, I still strongly believe, that it would be better for both of you to be drug free at the time of delivery.
Avatar n tn t been studied like methadone but from my personal experience I know lots of women who have babies on both suboxone and methadone and those babies are all fine. I had a friend tell me just today that she has a friend who is 4 months pregnant and is on suboxone and they found out her baby has down syndrome and she is saying it's from suboxone. Now whether that's true or not....who knows. But I haven't found anything about babies being born with downsyndrome so.... take it from there.
594476 tn?1219694472 What are you taking the subutex for? and how long? I had to take Suboxone for 5 days to get through my withdrawals from Opiates, and a friend had to take the Subutex for Heroin WD. We were only allowed to have it for 5 days because it's addictive also. I'm no Dr but I would think they would try to wean you off of it by cutting it in half for a few days, then cutting it in a quarter for a few days then stopping. Can you do that?
Avatar n tn Actually I'm in the same boat. I'm 17 weeks pregnant and on 10mg. I've had 2 babies while on Methadone the 1st I was on 80mg and she had no withdrawals the 2nd I was on 40mg and she did have withdrawals and spent 12 days in the NICU and was on morphine. I was told it doesn't really depend on your dose if your baby does or doesn't withdrawal, it just depends on the baby. I'm definately trying to get off the Methadone before I have this one.
Avatar f tn Hi. I was reading a lot of the forums on here and came across a lot of women who are currently pregnant and on suboxone or struggling with substance abuse issues. I have been on suboxone for about 3 years and got pregnant accidentally but through discussing it with my fiance we chose to keep the baby... I am currently 38 weeks pregnant and have done everything by the book and then some. I was extremely hesitant to tell my OBGYN that I take suboxone.
142722 tn?1281533616 I have to have a C-Section on May 11th, two months from now, I just started suboxone and my sub dr said he would like to see me stay on suboxone through the entire pregnancy and after for a few months. I have been reading on line and am scared because I may not get the pain relif I need. I have had two and it is painful :( My tolerance will be very high and they might not give me high levels of pain med to help :( maybe I should go off the suboxone by that time ???
6378426 tn?1380766766 m surprised they have you on Suboxone and not Subutex (Suboxone contains buprenorphine and Naloxone. Because Naloxone can sometimes cause symptoms of opiate withdrawal, which could cause miscarriage, pregnant women are normally advised to take Subutex - exactly the same as Suboxone, but without Naloxone, instead.) Either way, at present, Buprenorphine is listed as a category C drug for use during pregnancy.
Avatar f tn Subutex is a much safer drug during pregnancy then Suboxone and certainly safer than methadone. It would be best for both you and the baby to be gently tapered off of Subutex while you are still pregnant, so that you are both drug free by the time of the delivery and your baby will not need to go through any withdrawals at all.
Avatar n tn I have been on Suboxone then Subutex for more than five years. I've never really tried seriously to go off it, because even after a day, the withdrawal is too horrendous.. Also, I don't really mind being on it--as it's true what everyone says that it does give you a mild euphoria and extra energy. However, I now want to try to get pregnant. My Sub doctor says he has had two people stay on it, and their babies have been healthy...
Avatar f tn It would be best for both you and her to be gently tapered off of Suboxone while you are still pregnant, so that you are both drug free by the time of the delivery and she will not need to go through any withdrawals at all. Avatar f tn If you become pregnant while taking SUBOXONE, alert your doctor immediately as there may be significant risks to you and your baby; your baby may have symptoms of withdrawal at birth. If you are pregnant or become pregnant while taking SUBOXONE, you should report it using the contact information provided below.* Before taking SUBOXONE, talk to your doctor if you are breast-feeding or plan to breast-feed. SUBOXONE can pass into your milk and may harm the baby.
Avatar m tn hi, i am a suboxone user for 3 years and starting to taper down slowly. i am currently on 1mg morning and 1 mg evening. Yesterday i was prescribed tramadol by a different doctor for my pain and migraine. What i need to know is if it is OK to take tramadol while i am on suboxone? i am afraid that if i take tramadol tonight, the next morning when i dose my suboxone i will feel a very discomfort feeling or withdrawal.
Avatar n tn You need to quit smoking as well, (if you do) because it leads to decreased baby weight and higher incidence of early labor. Suboxone and Subutex are both commonly used medication to help pregnant addicts stop using and have been found safe to use in pregnancy to help mom stop her addiction. It is certainly far safer than continuing to use the narcotics. Please see a new doctor ASAP. Good luck to you and your baby.
Avatar f tn I am just about 6 months pregnant and in the beginning of my pregnancy I took a quarter of a suboxone for pain and didn't take it again until yesterday which was another quarter of a suboxone. I am actually very worried right now. my question is, if I do not take this any longer, will it be able to be detected in myself or the babys stool when she is born? I really would like to avoid CPS.
Avatar f tn They treat many women on methadone and other opiates and will be able to refer you to a physician who will be able to manage you on Suboxone or Subutex and will over a few months taper you off. You and the doctor will need to work together to aggressively get you off the meds by the time you are ready to deliver the baby. Subutex is the best and safest way to manage addiction during pregnancy.
Avatar m tn I asked my doc if I could get back on it while taking Suboxone and he said yes and perscribed it to me again. My question is if I should be taking these two meds together or not? I know my doc perscribed them to me but I can't help but question if it's ok. Does anyone have any takes on this? I am taking 8mg Sub 2x daily and 30mg Adderall 2x daily right now.
Avatar f tn I was wondering if anyone else is on suboxone and pregnant I'm a ftm and I get it prescribed and my doctor said it was o.k. but he sent me to a specialist that I now have to go to besides my regular ob. And I had my first appointment with the specialist and they also said everything looked fine and that it's just because of the medication I'm on that they like to check and make sure but I'm still worried. They also said that the baby's usually fine but it can cause problems.
Avatar f tn hi Thank you for your quick replys! I still haven't seen obgyn yet, I lived in crowded community and first available is July 31st so I'm going to keep looking to find someone to see me asap, I am 7 weeks today, just by going by first day of my last period. My sub doctor may not even want to prescribe it to me, I've only been seeing him for last 3 months I may have to see the one I saw in suburbs. (I'm in Chicago) Lynn, Congrats!
