Common Questions and Answers about Stroke signs smell

stroke

For several months now I have had a constant sweet <span style = 'background-color: #dae8f4'>smell</span> and taste in my nose and mouth. I consulted the doctor and had all the blood tests required for diabetes etc. All the tests came back normal. the doctor said that it could be a sinus infection, and all he could do is prescribe an anti-biotic. Can anyone shine any light on my problem ?.
Does anyone else experience "phantom smells"? I smell cigarette smoke on and off (no one around me or in my home/work place smokes). It's not all the time, but sometimes it's very strong. I mentioned this at TCI and the MD recommended a 24 hour EEG if this keeps happening as it could be a type of seizure. I'm having a sleep study done later this month and the sleep MD agrees and says that the EEG I'm hooked up to during the study may pick this up. Anyone else have this?
Oookay, so, it's a little strange, really, because I've gotten this quite a few times over the last few years, and it usually lasts a week, sometimes less, but it's never been this strong. When I breathe in and ESPECIALLY when I breathe out I can <span style = 'background-color: #dae8f4'>smell</span> gasoline, but it smells a little sweeter... It's weird and it annoys me and is distracting me from my work.
Hello, For a while i have been smelling a burning <span style = 'background-color: #dae8f4'>smell</span> in my nose, kind of like smoke. It's not constant, somedays it's there and some it's not, i don't know what it is, i searched around and couldn't really find much, any info would be great.
It is nonsense that incontinence after a stroke is forever. there is more nonsense going on about how to care for the stroke damaged elderly than I can believe. So never give up hope.
My mom had good health and no warning signs before the stroke, not even a headache, my dad found her this way mid-morning. the neurosurgeon did not offer much hope for us to survive the stroke nor in her recovery. She has already beat the odds. My mom was in ICU for 3 weeks and step-down 1 week and in rehab hospital for two months now. I have come to learn the dr.'s don't like or really now prognosis on recovery because everyone recovers differently.
) Is is possible you were just ovulating when you felt that strange pain? then again sometimes your body can give you signs very early b4 a test could pick up anything. Nausea was an early sign for me when I was pg b4.
Why do I have the constant <span style = 'background-color: #dae8f4'>smell</span> of smoke in my nose. It used to be just an occasional thing, but lately it seems to be all the time. I am concerned that this is a symptom of something I don't know about. the smell is strong. I used to notice it about a half hour after taking my Allegra-D 12 hr. tablets, but now I smell it much more often. Am I going crazy or is there something to this I'm not aware of. Has anyone else experienced this? Please help?
My son suffered a TBI and one of first questions when he woke up was did he feel like he could <span style = 'background-color: #dae8f4'>smell</span> foods etc. these senses (<span style = 'background-color: #dae8f4'>smell</span> and taste) in his case seemed to be heighten - he said he could smell things that we couldn't or when he tasted something it was very salty to him. One year out these seem to have settled down - he doesn't complain that things taste salty anymore and when asked by the doctors he says that his sense of smell is normal again.
Started feeling weird back in december, fatique, headaches, weakness, trouble spelling, etc..etc. Had Ct scan in march, results came back normal, is it possible for to me to had a stroke and it heal completely in 3 months, to where it would not be detected? Also, had mri done in june..results came back normal as well.
the hand effected by my husband's brain hemorrhage has had a smell to it ever since the stroke. We have tried numerous soaps to try and remove the <span style = 'background-color: #dae8f4'>smell</span> but it always comes back. Would like to know what causes this and if there is a treatment for this. It is the left side of his body that was effected but only the hand has the strong odor. He is able to partially extend fingers so it's not closed up completely. Thank you.
I am periodically smelling/tasting a foul odor that appears to be coming from my nasal passages. It smells like rotting flesh! Sometimes I <span style = 'background-color: #dae8f4'>smell</span> it when just sitting around. I ALWAYS <span style = 'background-color: #dae8f4'>smell</span> it when I bend over. Of course, I am concerned and I hoped that someone could offer some guidance in rectifying this matter. This has been going on for around 6 months. I haven't been sick (cold/flu) in that time and I'm not showing any other signs of a sinus infection.
I am worried as I have heard this can mean all sorts from brain tumours to signs of stroke. I don't have any signs of stroke however I have been seeing odd colours and my eyes have been being blurry recently. But I thought that was because I was online too much as my eyes are photosensitive. Other people have told me it is just sense memory and my mind playing tricks, as I do have a history of anxiety and paranoia. Please help, I'm getting very worried.

He is also loosing function in his right hand. His cardiologist did a CT scan of the head which was normal, ruling out stroke or brain bleed. His bloodwork was normal. A nuclear stress test has been done & we will receive those results in 2 days. Any thoughts on what could be causing this new symptom? He takes Coreg, Cozaar, Lipitor, Digoxin, Nexium, Niaspan & Allopurinol.
This is why it's important to inhale through your nose, especially when you are exercising. Your <span style = 'background-color: #dae8f4'>smell</span> and taste buds are connected. If you can't breathe well through your nose, then your sense of smell will suffer, which means that your sense of taste will be altered as well. This can lead to appetite and weight issues. Your nose has vital nervous system connections to your lungs and heart.
I started smelling it about 2 weeks ago and have been on antibiotics for 5 days and the <span style = 'background-color: #dae8f4'>smell</span> is gone but now I can't breathe through my nose. I get the <span style = 'background-color: #dae8f4'>smell</span> before any signs of infection and it takes about 2-3 weeks before I get actual nasal congestion. Pay attention next time it happens and see if you get a sinus infection or cold shortly after....Have a blessed Thanksgiving!

I have been dealing with these migraines triggered by smells for over 5 months now. This <span style = 'background-color: #dae8f4'>smell</span> issue has compounded 10 fold lately and can't understand why. Someone told me that it could be that I need to do a liver cleanse. Everything these days is scented so makes it really hard to go and do anything. I just retired and this isn't the way I envisioned retirement life to be. It's dominating my life!!! I have been seen by a Neuro Dr. this week.
Sometimes I <span style = 'background-color: #dae8f4'>smell</span> something like rotten food but no one else can <span style = 'background-color: #dae8f4'>smell</span> it and there is no logical reason it should be there. My doctor was shocked when my MRI came back "clean", he had me listed as clinically probably MS. However, I only had a brain MRI w/ and w/o contrast. No spinal MRI no Optic Nerve MRI, no LP. According to some things I've read, I would assume that I would be more likely to have lesions of my Cervical MRI and Optic Nerve MRI.
But I thought hemeroids were on the outside, this was like half an inch to an inch inside my anal cavity with no outside signs of hemeroid. But im not sure if this had anything to do with it anyways, Just mentioning. Personally I think the hemeroid came from drinking diet pop, because it began as soon as I began solely drinking it and stopped a week after I stopped drinking it. Anyways, back to my skin irritation, I thought no big deal, maybe it would go away, and was a one time deal.
I have had every test done at two different hospitols refered by my neurologist and have no definate answers to what is the cause, I've had 4 lumbar test that show my protein is at 114, 6 MRI's and the last one they thought i might of had a stroke, the MRI's on my spine show most of my dics to be degenerative and signs of mild to moderate spinal canal stenosis and mild to moderate bilateral neural foraminal stenosis, and i also came back possitive for autoimmune and ANA at 1:320 in nucleolar
Had some co-workers catch these, don't remember. in early 2008, I also started having an odd high chemical type <span style = 'background-color: #dae8f4'>smell</span>, then loss of consciousness or altered consciousness, then muscles hurt and ached for hours to days, confusion/disorientation upon consciousness, and extreme fatigue/sleep for several hours afterwards. Went to Neuro - ran MRI in June 08, showed Aysmmetrical inbalance of Hippocampi. in July 08 Neuro diagnosed me with Partial Complex and said due to symptomatology and MRI.
, a phone call that he made two days before). His comprehension, already affected by a stroke that he had three years ago, is getting worse. Physical symptoms include red palms, along with "knots" underneath the skin, and red, blotchy skin (upper torso). in the past two months, he has lost about 15 lbs. without trying. His appetite is poor, and he is easily fatigued. He also sounds like he has a lot of congestion in his chest (kind of a wheezy, rattling sound).
hi everyone I need your help and thoughts, I have been seen by two doctors for graves in the past three weeks.I have lost 45 pounds in the last three months, my voice is always horsey,I can not STAND the cold or any temps that are way to hot or for that matter, I don't sleep for more that four hours at a time, my eyes have red circles around them and depending on the time of day are almost swelled shut!
they do say that 95% of Lupus patients will have a positive ANA though. Lupus is 10X more likely in women, she's also the right age to show signs. It could very well just be OA though. I hope this helps in some way, and hope the best for your daughter! Get well soon!
This was last Wednesday, and she is doing better. She actually walks without falling down, and that is on ice and snow, so she shows signs of getting better, and is still doing her business outside when she goes. She is on antibiotics now, and that might be doing the job. the problem now, is she will not eat. I have tried everything, from cooking eggs with cheese, pasta with chicken or turkey, cottage cheese which she loves, treats, anything to try and get her to eat.
the hallmark of ALS is having both upper and lower motor signs. One sees the upper motor neuron signs of weakness, hyperreflexia, spasticity, extensor plantar responses, and clonus, with lower motor neuron signs of hyporeflexia, flaccidity, atrophy, fasciculations and weakness. As you can see from the symptoms, there is a mixture but some keys we look for are muscle weakness with other signs combined with no changes in the sensory system or cognition.
