Common Questions and Answers about Stretching and flexibility in karate

flexibility

Avatar f tn Stretching isn't the best way to improve flexibility—lifting weights through a full range of motion is, according to a recent study at the University of North Dakota. Pausing for 2 to 3 seconds at the "down" position of the lift (where you feel the stretch) without relaxing your muscles is even more effective.
Avatar m tn I have flexibility issues in almost all of my joints (Knees, elbow, wrist, ankle). Coincidentally, all the joints in the right side of my body are worse. I cannot squat as the back of my feet cannot touch my butt, my hand cannot touch my shoulder, cannot do pushup as wrist will hurt a lot. I have done xrays but doctor said my xrays are fine. Went through physiotherapy but joints flexibility does not improve no matter how much i stretched.
Avatar m tn hey i am running 5 km in the morning and 5 km in the evening since last 10 days. now i am having muscle pain in my both legs in thighs and calf that i am not able to complete 1 km. what shoud i do ??
Avatar m tn I have been sore right around both of my gluteus Maximus muscles since December. The muscle is very tight and seems to be restricting the movement of my lower lumbar. It's uncomfortable to sit even for short periods of time as there is a dull pain from my glutes down the back of my legs. I have been to a spinal PT and I temporarily felt better but not much. He focused only on my spine and said my movement was very limited for a 27 year old.
Avatar m tn Yoga is a fantastic way to stay active and healthy, but it's important to have the right equipment to help you perform your poses with ease and safety. One of the most essential items in your yoga kit is a non-slip yoga mat, which can help prevent slips and falls and provide better stability during your practice. Additionally, a yoga stretching strap can be an invaluable tool for deepening your stretches and improving your flexibility.
Avatar n tn m sitting at my desk and stretching my arms back. It stretches my back/upper torso and arms, but when I do it I seem to hold my breathe a bit and it causes a very intense pain on the very top of my head. The intensity goes down after a few moments and then a small headache lingers from a few minutes to a few hours. I don't try to hold my breathe though and I don't hold the stretch for more than a few seconds.
Avatar f tn One study performed at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill showed that subjects who performed dynamic warm-ups had higher performance in the vertical jump test than those who just did standard stretching. Dynamic flexibility, which is moving your muscles and joints within your full range of motion repetitively, should be performed before weightlifting because it stimulates higher neural activity and increases tissue elasticity.
480331 tn?1310403529 My expert opinion - if there is an underlying defect and he wants to be active in later life, therapy is needed. Problems in the feet, knees, and/or hips can cause back problems later, and that really bites. If it is preferential only, it's not a big deal.
1102149 tn?1259692962 I dunno about going while you're pregnant...I did Shaolin Goju and it's a fairly high-impact martial art....this is my second pregnancy and you're very vulnerable in the early stages. Katas and continuing to practice would be a good idea like Faye said it would promote a flow of energies and keep your center balanced....but something like Tai-Chi (I know, wussy martial arts) is way better for a pregnant woman than something that could lead to potential strikes.
Avatar n tn They consist of stretching and holding different joint and muscle groups for 10 to 30 seconds each. Stretching improves flexibility, and daily stretching is the basis for any exercise program. Strength exercises involve working the muscle against resistance. This can be either with or without weights. Resistance training strengthens the muscle and increases the amount of activity you can do pain-free. Conditioning exercise, also called aerobic exercise, improves cardiovascular fitness.
1216899 tn?1288570325 I've noticed an increase in pain and stiffness as spring rolls into view for years. Like you, it catches me by surprise every year. In fact, I've noticed increased pain in the last week or two and (yet again) hadn't connect it to the changing weather. I ashamed to admit that it's not the result of any increased activity. I always imagine that my body will feel better as winter ends. I love sunshine skies and heat therapy usually soothes my joints.
Avatar m tn I went to a doctor and was told it is not Sciatica, and that it is a muscle issue and that stretching therapy to improve my flexibility in my hamstrings, and strengthin my core will help rectify the problem. They also said that poor posture for the 47 years of my life is a contributing factor. Can anybody shed some light on this and some possible remedies?
Avatar m tn In the last 5 years I have realized that I get lower back, hip and leg pain. But here is the funny part...It only happens if I have gone without a workout for a week or two. Initially I thought it's not so bad, because it forced me to get back in the gym if I have been lazy for a while. But recently the amount of "off time" required to bring on the pain is decreasing. It's getting to the point that I literally cannot miss a single training session.
Avatar f tn If im understanding correctly then i have the same thing. I have a tan/brown line going up and down from my belly button. Its just skin discolouration & will go back to normal. As for it been tender when hes there hes prob just pushing hard & making the skin stretch to the max?
Avatar n tn Last summer (2017) I started with pull-ups and chin-ups and in late August I started to notice pain in the elbow. One morning I woke up and could only bend my arm halfway to the shoulder. Attempting to move past it caused enormous pain. I'm normally quite agile and can reach my left shoulder with my left hand without difficulty.
Avatar f tn I'm 18 weeks 4 days pregnant with baby boy #2 and I've been having some pain in my lower abdomen. My baby is still moving around as usual so I'm pretty sure its growing pains. I was wondering if any of you ladies have had these growing pains and how long (hours, days) it lasted?
1308443 tn?1302693321 My health teacher is the athletic director and has some medical training. Yesterday I told him about the popping and he said that it was a good thing. I already went to see the doctor and he told me it wasn't currently broken thatwas in January. When I told my teacher that I was told to squeeze a tennis ball he said it was the worst thing I could have done I had to agree because my finger did get worse. Is there anything I should be doing for it during karate?
4437866 tn?1388119624 Locate the perineum, directly below the vagina. It is the skin between the vagina and the anus. Apply some cold pressed and pure oil (such as olive oil) to this skin. Place the thumbs at the base of the vagina, allowing them the slide inside the vagina (to about the first joint) moving some oil with them. Using gentle but firm pressure, move the thumbs from the base of the vagina up the side walls as if you were making a "U".
Avatar n tn Stretching the front and back or your leg to increase the flexibility in your knee. Perform stretching exercises at the end of your workout when your muscles are warm. Stretch the front of your leg in a standing position by bending your knee and raising your foot up toward your backside. Grasp the ankle with your hand to enhance the stretch. Stretch the back of your legs in a seated position with your legs extended on the floor. Fold forward over your straight legs to stretch your hamstrings.
Avatar f tn This may be a crazy question, but I'm trying to figure out my summer and chemo! Is there 'wiggle' room with the chemo treatments? or do you have to go on the same day every three weeks? My six weeks is almost up and I need to get started and want to do it on Fridays so that I'll have the week-end to recover, but 4th of July falls on the Friday that I would get my second treatment and I'm assuming that they don't do chemo on that day. Thanks for any info.
Avatar n tn It tests your physical endurance for sure. Basically you do extreme flexibility and strength poses in a blaring hot room that is hotter than a sauna. Supposedly really healthy for you. But people who cannot endure it physically end up puking sometimes. Also, always do some cardio with strength training. Are you in any sports? Could be could to balance it out. You need to learn the dangers of dehydration. If you work out a lot, you can't just drink plain water.
Avatar f tn The more days you do this, the more flexibility the muscles in your neck will have. When I do them everyday, my pain is less and I have fewer headaches. Without some kind of stretching exercises, the muscles just keep tightening up. I tried to explain these the best I could. I hope it makes sense. Let me know if I confused you or if these help. Please, if it hurts, STOP! It should not be painful. You should just feel it stretch a little.
7980557 tn?1395954094 Hello I quit dance when I was about nine and I recently started doing it again. I also started stretching to improve my flexibility. I've improved a lot and can now do the splits however I recently strained my right leg muscles, especially in the thigh. It's not getting any better and I am getting stiffer and less flexible as it is too painful to stretch. Is there any way I could stretch again soon and make the muscle loosen again?
