405614 tn?1329144114 One other thing people might want to check out is Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction, which is a secular, meditation-based program that is used a lot for people with chronic pain. This practice uses a kind of body awareness meditation and there has been quite a bit of research on this method (see http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/sites/entrez?db=pubmed&cmd=DetailsSearch&term=mindfulness+based+stress+reduction or http://tinyurl.com/83cltn). There are CDs available at http://www.
139792 tn?1498585650 The study findings are in line with prior research on Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction, or MBSR, programs and suggest that MMFT may provide "psychological prophylaxis," or protection from cognitive and emotional disturbances, even among high-stress cohorts such as members of the military preparing for deployment.
15695260 tn?1549593113 Mindfulness Meditation. (There are some apps which teach this. 'Headspace', (I forget the other one)) This will help strengthen certain areas of the brain, which leads to stress reduction (and other health benefits). A few minutes a day for 2 months should show some results. There's also mindfulness motion exercises: Qi-Gong, Tai-Chi, Yoga (Therapeutic yoga. Too many types of yogas.) There may be some meditation classes nearby. Or Buddhist places often have meditation classes.
Avatar m tn Look up MBSR (Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction) online. I have been getting into meditation and yoga and reading Jon Kabat-Zinn's book "Full Catastrophe Living". It is incredible the things that come up for people when they learn how to 'get still' and tap into what's going on internally. I have been on benzo's myself. Not a huge fan of xanax. I'm now on a generic for Klonopin. Not impressed with that either.
1348302 tn?1286575703 Meditation has been laid stress upon by all religions. The meditative state of mind is declared by the Yogis to be the highest state in which the mind exists. When the mind is studying the external object, it gets identified with it, loses itself. To use the simile of the old Indian philosopher: the soul of man is like a piece of crystal, but it takes the colour of whatever is near it. Whatever the soul touches ... it has to take its colour. That is the difficulty.
667078 tn?1316000935 There were a bunch of things on dealing with Stress and Mindfulness Meditation. All things I needed to be reminded of. I am signing up for a Mindfulness Class at the Cancer Hospital. I forget to breath and have been worrying way too much lately. I hope everyone is well. It is great to be alive today and out in the world. I have been so sick and being in bed gets old.
4152590 tn?1350772856 Self hypnosis which I use sometimes successfully to calm some pain and relax. Mindfulness Meditation and I used to think it was New Age Nonsense, but now I use it everyday. Daily exercise even if it is just a short walk. Drinking enough water.
1348302 tn?1286575703 In mindfulness meditation, the subject sits comfortably, in silence, centering attention by focusing mental awareness an object or process (either the breathing process, a sound, a mantra koan or riddle evoking questions, a visualisation, or an exercise) and then consciously is encouraged to scan their thoughts in an open focus, shifting freely from one perception to the next (Kutz et al., 1985a, b). No thought, image or sensation is considered an intrusion.
Avatar f tn I'm sorry you are having this experience. I've had that sensation of racing heart. Like I can't calm down. Honestly, what helps me is to deep breath (breath in deeply for a count of three, hold for a count of three, breath out slowly for a count of three, hold for three, repeat). This is calming to me. And while you do it, visualize something soothing (whatever is to you like a beach, a field of flowers with birds chirping, etc.).
Avatar f tn Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction (MBSR), developed by Jon Kabat-Zinn, founder of the Stress Reduction Clinic at the University of Massachusetts Medical School, teaches individuals to train their minds to cope with stress more skillfully (I discovered Rick Hanson through Karen Sothers, who teaches MBSR at the Scripps Institute for Integrative Medicine in San Diego, California).
Avatar m tn I would like to communicate with anyone using and having success with meditation and or yoga for severe anxiety Thanks
Avatar m tn What helped me was meditation where you learn to listen to your own body,A great meditation CD I used was Mindfulness Meditation by Robert Kabat-Zinn,give it a try, what have you got to lose,I have learnt how to shut down now.
333672 tn?1273792789 Interesting study that compares people with MS who went through a mindfulness meditation training program with those receiving just regular medical care. "Those who went through the mindfulness program improved in nearly every measure of fatigue, depression and quality of life, while those who received usual medical care declined slightly on most of the measures." http://www.physorg.com/news204826412.
Avatar f tn I crochet and counting the stitches as I go helps keep my mind occupied. I also really love mindfulness meditation, helped me get over my anxiety long-term. Google "ucla mindfulness meditation" you should see a website that says 'weekly podcast at the hammer' there is a huge list of guided meditations that can help you calm yourself down. Keep trying if it doesn't work right away, it takes time to train yourself to not cycle through bad thoughts.
Avatar f tn It was developed by Jon Kabat Zinn at the University of Massachusetts Stress Reduction Clinic. The type of meditation sounds alot like TS Geare described to you in that you don't try to force your thoughts away. You focus on your breathing to keep you in the present moment. When thoughts intrude, you acknowledge them and then go back to your breathing. By doing this, you become aware of your thoughts and how they efffect you.
1492418 tn?1289149263 good morning, I have come a long way in this journey to wellness with meditation and exercise being key bbuuttt my first real obsessive fear is turning out to be my most difficult to get a handle on. I try all the things that has worked to help with other fears and obsessions but this is stubborn. I have this super huge fear of passing out. this fear has kept me from living so often. More than the fear of the event is the absolute horror of anyone witnessing it.
1922027 tn?1342460110 Past research has found that Buddhist-style meditation -- also known as mindfulness meditation -- can help people cope with pain, anxiety, and a number of other physical and mental health problems. But in most cases the training takes weeks, not days. The fact that Zeidan and his colleagues achieved these results after just 80 minutes of training is "spectacular," says Robert Bonakdar, M.D.
444932 tn?1273980797 "The Miracle of Mindfulness" by Mr. Hahn. The only one you'll ever need. He's Buddist, but the book is non-religious.
1480087 tn?1288019577 There are many ways this can happen. Stress and depression lower the pain threshold. Also sleep disruption lowers the pain threshold and predisposes to various kinds of muscle and joint pains. (And of course it works the other way as well). For something that helps all of these conditions consider listening to mindfulness meditation audios (you can search Amazon for MP3's). I especially like Jon Kabat-Zinn's stuff.
12189145 tn?1423924999 The two that have been most studied are TM and Mindfulness meditation. TM is a Hindu meditation where you repeat a word (called a mantra) to yourself silently over and over; when thoughts intrude, you gently return to the mantra as the thoughts drift away. Mindfulness is basically the meditation the Buddha taught, which is to watch your breath; again, when thoughts arise and you realize it, you gently return to watching your breath.
Avatar m tn Not worrying about what you should be doing, not being upset about something that has happened in the past. Personally, I have really been helped and grounded by mindfulness meditation. If you do a YouTube search for Jon Kabat-Zin (he's my favorite) or mindfulness mediation you'll find some awesome videos! Good luck to you.
1641772 tn?1301357889 I use his series 1 CDs and have done so for many years. He is the pioneer of mindfulness and stress reduction programs in hospitals. If you like yoga find a school or community centre that offers it or just do it to a cd such as the one by Kabat-Zinn. If you enjoy meditation you can also do it to these CDs and/or go to a temple or centre that does group meditation or instruction.
Avatar f tn again and again and again. But we are all human and that is the way our minds work. With mindfulness meditation, you are not trying to clear your mind or be blank, but be aware of the way things (you) are. That takes the pressure off for me. It is the way it is. And I become aware of my thoughts and how they affect the way I feel. Like greenlydia, when I feel I can't sit still, I do something with movement (simple yoga), focusing on making sure I breathe thru each movement or stretch.
Avatar f tn you may engage yourself in activities such as yoga, meditation and many more mindfulness techniques ...I am sure if taken up seriously...with time your anxiety will reduce. Having said that, if you think you are meeting most of the symptoms of PTSD or Anxiety pl visit a psychologist, they would be of a great help.
Avatar m tn I was Already working ON ACCEPTANCE to reduce my anxiety. Now I also do mindfulness meditation, this has helped me to accept the situation and do my best to deal with it. I am on medication now for hepB. You also need to calm down and accept the situation and do your best. It's not easy but, definitely doable. Stressing out will not help you and your wife. Google mindfulness meditation, and start doing it daily. Approach with open mind.
