1528307 tn?1336000554 Hi makani! I am a nursing student too. I always wonder if my having anxiety will keep me from being successful and finishing school. I can so relate to not being able to study! God, it sets off panic attacks every time I open a book. I'm scared to death of success and I'm scared to death of failure. ARgh! Anyway, enough about me. You did so good! Every accomplishment (like continuing to drive home) is a victory!
1553083 tn?1296232321 I was wondering if anyone out there uses mindful meditation (Jon Kabat-Zinn). My councilor feels this may help my anxiety/panic attacks. If so, let me know your thoughts.
1539037 tn?1294318628 There is an Anxiety and Panic workbook and there are amazing books by Jon Kabat-Zinn on Mindfulness. Its a powerful tool that can really help you learn to focus your find. Right now I am reading the Mindfulness Code and its a great book as well. Hope you find something that works soon.
Avatar m tn I also have sleeping issues. Mine are because of a medication i take, not for gastrointestinal issues, though. I find that during the day, if I do some sort of meditation according a Mindfulness practice, that I am more relaxed when going to sleep. "Full Catasrophe Living" by Jon Kabat-Zinn is a good starter book for meditation and health, proven to work in a clinical setting.
1480087 tn?1288019577 Jon Kabat-Zinn also has a book called ?Full Catastrophe of Living which could be helpful if you're into reading. I think one of his goals is to reduce pain through meditation. Mindfulness is a technique stressed quite a bit for those with bpd in particular. I don't think the back pain is a symptom of bipolar. I think it is likely due to stress, and muscle tension, or a long-standing back injury.
1641772 tn?1301357889 I hate to eat breakfast which is not good, but if you juice with veggie and fruit you can have a healthy start to your day. If you want some great relaxation tapes check out Jon Kabat-Zinn. I use his series 1 CDs and have done so for many years. He is the pioneer of mindfulness and stress reduction programs in hospitals. If you like yoga find a school or community centre that offers it or just do it to a cd such as the one by Kabat-Zinn.
1492418 tn?1289149263 Felt soooo good, when i felt anxiety and the need to run i named what i was doing like Jon Kabat Zinn (sp?) says to do, worry worry worry, thinking thinking thinking, it really helped to describe what i was doing. Sort of made the thoughts less important, just thinking. Hope you all are celebrating any successes large or small. Even 5 minutes of no anxiety is a success to be celebrated.
Avatar f tn I completely agree. Dealing with the possible loss of your home is a very anxiety-producing situation for anyone! I'm sorry that your anxiety feels out of control right now. Meditation helps me a lot. If you look at some of my previous replies to posts you'll see that I was very skeptical of meditation but it has, in fact, helped me tremendously. I prefer mindful meditation by Jon Kabat-Zinn. He's got some great youtube videos.
Avatar f tn Well there are things that can help like exercising every day for atleast 30 minutes, meditation daily, yoga, learning and practicing mindfulness(there are lots of books, Jon Kabat Zinn is one author) learning deep breathing exercises. Over proper diet. The better we treat our bodies, the better we can feel. CBT is also another way that can help people control their anxiety, other therapy. Always ensure that there is no medical cause for your anxiety and keep your doctor up to date.
345079 tn?1299202476 Oh sorry the link didnt work. Glad you were able to get that book!
Avatar f tn Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction (MBSR), developed by Jon Kabat-Zinn, founder of the Stress Reduction Clinic at the University of Massachusetts Medical School, teaches individuals to train their minds to cope with stress more skillfully (I discovered Rick Hanson through Karen Sothers, who teaches MBSR at the Scripps Institute for Integrative Medicine in San Diego, California).
Avatar m tn The only thing I have found to be somewhat helpful and under my own control are the books and CDs of both Peter Levine and Jon Kabot-Zinn. When I force myself (and as you probably know by now, everything we do after PTSD includes forcing ourselves to do it) to listen to the CDs, read the books and try to understand them repeatedly, I do better. What the CDs and their brain and body exercises do is try to replace the problematic memories with new, positive neurons.
Avatar n tn Mindfulness meditation (your local hospital may offer courses based on the work of Jon Kabat-Zinn, or you can google him and find more information about his approach). 3. See a psychiatrist. If you are feeling depressed or anxious, even if it is obviously due to these experiences of pain, your mood can contribute to the problems. In that case getting help with your mood can make a big difference.
699295 tn?1295358345 When I stopped drinking I had a lot of trouble sleeping,so I started listening to some meditation cds,if I couldn't sleep at least these relaced me,I found the ones by Jon Kabat-Zinn very good, they are called mindfulness meditation, hope this helps Denise
Avatar n tn talking to my therapist helps a lot and i am also taking a class called MBSR (mindfulness based stress reduction) which was started in 1979 by a gentleman named Jon Kabat-Zinn for people with chronic pain. it helps me deal with my chronic pain more effectively through breathing techniques, meditation and gentle yoga. (if interested, just google in Mr. Kabat-Zinn's name for more info and classes in your area) it has made a world of difference!! i am just sharing what has worked for me!!
Avatar f tn the above comment are all very infromative and well written --i know for myself even though i have svt i have had panic attacks because of it or the lack of understanding of it --it is great news that your heart is good and be reassured there.as for the sinus tach -low dose inderal is good for that and it is also used in anxiety situitions --like public speaking etc and may be worth a try.
Avatar f tn I meant to type 1/22/12
Avatar n tn It's the optimum health cd. It also has Jon-Kabat Zinn on it. It's a 4 cd set. Two are about meditation and the other two are on breathing. I drink green tea. I felt great after I did it. It might be worthwhile seeing an endocrinologist to make sure there's not a physical cause for your anxiety. Sometimes thyroid problems manisfest themselves in these ways. I just read that on this forum recently and am going to get myself checked.
Avatar m tn What helped me was meditation where you learn to listen to your own body,A great meditation CD I used was Mindfulness Meditation by Robert Kabat-Zinn,give it a try, what have you got to lose,I have learnt how to shut down now.
396680 tn?1208070334 Jon Kabat-Zinn developedthe University of Massachusetts Medical Centers Stress Reduction Clinic. Another book that uses principles of MBSR is "Calming Your Anxious Mind" by Jeffrey Brantley, MD. I was lucky enough to be able to attend MBSR in my home town led by a MBSR trained person. It helped me tremendously and it continues to help me every day. Good Luck.
Avatar f tn I am getting success with mindfulness techniques, i like ekhart tolle and jon kabitt zinn, maybe find some books at the library or listen on utube. College is a stressful time without panic so with it must be tough for you. I had it too in college but made it thru!! Good luck on your journey and this forum is great for support.
Avatar m tn Look up MBSR (Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction) online. I have been getting into meditation and yoga and reading Jon Kabat-Zinn's book "Full Catastrophe Living". It is incredible the things that come up for people when they learn how to 'get still' and tap into what's going on internally. I have been on benzo's myself. Not a huge fan of xanax. I'm now on a generic for Klonopin. Not impressed with that either.
Avatar f tn You might also want to consider trying to find a program in mindfulness meditation. Jon Kabat-Zinn developed a program using mindfulness meditation to help folks with chronic pain and/or chronic medical illnesses to live full lives that has been very successful, and a number of hospitals offer programs modeled on his.
Avatar m tn Explore mindfulness with Jon Kabitt Zinn (sp?) i do a section of his cd every morning, helps ground me thru the day, I get excited when someone else is interested in this and finds it helpful.
675718 tn?1530033033 I really find the meditation tapes great the ones I use are done by a scientist called Jon Kabat-Zinn,there not like normal meditation tapes there called mindfulness meditation,if you google his name you'll find heaps about him.
333672 tn?1273792789 FWIW, the mindfulness meditation used in this study, although based on practices from the Buddhist tradition, is taught in a completely secular context as developed by Jon Kabat-Zinn at the University of Massachusetts (http://www.umassmed.edu/content.aspx?id=41252). There has been quite a bit of research showing its effectiveness in helping people cope with depression and chronic pain. There are some CDs and tapes available from http://www.mindfulnesstapes.
1088430 tn?1259159773 I've been on 120mg of Cymbalta for almost 4 years. My PM Doc put me on it to treat horrendous nerve pain, which it does make a difference with. I was able to reduce (greatly!) the level of opiate based pain meds I was on as a result of the Cymbalta. BUT I was still working when I firts started it, and I felt it made me feel "Zombie" during the day, so my Doc switched me to taking both pills @night, which helped with the daytime drowsiness.
11079760 tn?1483386130 Jon Kabat-Zinn's Mindfulness for Pain Relief is similar to the Cognitive Therapy approach for people dealing with chronic pain. I've used several of his other mindfulness exercise recordings and have found them helpful. I'm not sure if the link will go through, but Amazon has it under "Mindfulness Meditation for Pain Relief: Guided Practices for Reclaiming Your Body and Your Life" http://www.amazon.
Avatar f tn My pain management Dr. recommended the Kabat-Zinn Mindfull Mediation for Pain Management, and I love it and recommend it, but I would not recommend tapering medication while starting alternative therapies. The tapering should be done only when you've mastered and are happy with doing meditation. It took me a long time to buy the books and tapes, read them, understand them and work through the meditation to the point where I could cut back.
1951383 tn?1325208580 if you think about what we put our muscles through when we are anxious it only makes sense.
