Avatar n tn How do you view a reduction in both LDL and HDL? I have heard that the risk of CAD goes down proportionately with the decrease in LDL. That is, for ever 1% decrease in LDL, the risk of CAD goes down by 1%. I have also heard that for each 1mg (mg rather than %) increase in HDL, the risk of CAD goes down by 2%. Is this correct? Does this formular hold true when the patients LDL and HDL are low to begin with. My LDL went from 80 to 39 and HDL from 50 to 34.
Avatar m tn I checked the Scleral Lens Education Society website and they listed two scleral lens fitters in northern California; one in Berkeley and one in Sacramento. I hope one of these can help answer questions about fitting and providing these lenses. There may be others to which these practitioners might be able to refer you. Good luck.
Avatar n tn Hi. I am a 25 year old male - 6'0" and 205 lbs. I am a 3rd year phd student at UC Berkeley so over the past few years I have had many highly stressful situations, and am under a constant amount of stress day to day. For a few days now I have been having a slight "stinging" or "burning" feeling that comes and goes in the left-upper side of my chest (definately centered over the heart area). Am I at risk of having a heart attack? I don't eat well.

Avatar m tn Have you ever tried anything like vitals or healthgrades to find a doctor? I've had luck with that. What do you need to see a functional medicine doc for? What is going on with your health??
163305 tn?1333668571 The two undercover agents, seen in the photo, were hidden within the crowd of a couple hundred protests who marched from near UC Berkeley to downtown Oakland Wednesday night, including Berkeley High School students who had participated in a mass walk-out that afternoon, in the third week of nightly protests against police violence against people of color and the non-indictment of the white officers who killed Mike Brown and Eric Garner.
1747881 tn?1546175878 “This is what tolerance looks like at UC Berkeley,” said Mike Wright, a Berkeley College Republican member said as smoke bombs went off around him. Someone threw red paint on him. Protesters argued that hate speech isn’t free speech, countering the university’s explanation — free speech — on why it had allowed the event to proceed even as students demanded that the university cancel it. http://www.sfgate.com/news/article/Protesters-storm-Milo-Yiannopoulos-event-at-UC-10901829.

206807 tn?1331936184 Four suspects were arrested on charges of assaulting police officers at the Mobil gas station on Hanley Road in Berkeley, just miles from the site of 18-year-old Michael Brown’s death in Ferguson last August. “To come there armed with explosive devices is certainly something that is not safe for our community, not safe for our businesses, certainly not safe for our police officers,” Belmar said.
Avatar f tn Data presented by Mitch Shiffman from the HALT-C study, which Afdhal referred to in this oral talk at DDW, showed dose reductions in ribavirin had a more negative effect than a dose reduction in Pegasys on end-of-treatment response and sustained viral response in the HALT-C study. Shiffman reported that sustained viral response was 23% (n=118, no dose reductions) and when there was a dose reduction only in Pegasys the SVR was still 23% (n=70).
Avatar f tn I had a myocardial profusion scan awhile back but did not complete the resting part due to very bad reaction to radioactive tracer. It said" there was a reduction in the tracer uptake within the septum proximally and also within the anterior wall in the region of mid ventricle.gated acquisition shows no thickening or motion abnormality.
Avatar f tn I, too, live in the bay area. In Berkeley, in fact. ***@****. . I see Dr Joanna Cooper in Berkeley. Please let me know what you find out. Paula http://www2.muw.edu/~mharmon/501ch7stg.
Avatar m tn These tests look at completely different things, so yes. Its alot to break down but basically.. Stress tests look at electricity and wall motion. Ct angiograms look at blood flow. Contrast mri and nuclear medicine looks at perfusion (how well muscles soak up blood). So you can have a 48% reduction in blood flow, resulting in a 68% reduction in pumping action/wall motion and a 20% loss of perfusion all in 1, yes.
148588 tn?1465778809 Kind of like Janet Napolitano's list of "offending phrases" aimed at microaggression, at UC Berkeley, a couple of years ago. Both seem inappropriate...
Avatar n tn reducing the amount of reaction to stress is usually accomplished by meditation or stress reduction in the individual, but for a pharmeceutical treatment, most doctors turn to SSRI's. These drugs increase the amount of seratonin in the brain, and this reaction has the side effect of making you less emotive and therefore less "stressable." Again....very good question.
410475 tn?1262942367 Personally I would risk 75mg/day reduction while above 150mg/day, but stick to 37.5mg/day reduction for each step down from 150mg/day. When it comes to antidepressants, always get doctor advice before implementing a reduction program. As always, my comments do not constitute doctor's advice --- always see a doctor before changing any medication for stress or depression.
Avatar f tn The acute Wolff–Chaikoff effect was described in 1948 by Drs Jan Wolff and Israel Lyon Chaikoff at the University of California Berkeley, USA.6 Wolff and Chaikoff observed a transient reduction (lasting ~24 h) in the synthesis of thyroid hormones in rats exposed to high amounts of iodide administered intraperitoneally." "In most individuals, the decreased production of thyroid hormones is only transient and resumes after adaptation to the acute Wolff–Chaikoff effect.
