They had to evacuate the other students, the principal had to go get my dad (he taught at the junior high down the street), and ems was called. They had all the teachers shut their doors and stand in the windows when they wheeled me out so the other kids couldn't see. I was 2 months early though so the hospital stopped the labor and sent me home on bed rest, except school...

1310633 tn?1430224091 To me, the European model, where high school age students either attend a university prep type school or a technical or trade school makes more sense. I understand that in large cities, charter schools are taking desperately needed resources from public schools, but from what I've observed in the last few years, they may be a better fit for smaller semi-rural communities. In one small town in the Texas Hill Country, there are two high schools.
Avatar n tn He has many hyperglycemic episodes and has missed excessive amounts of class time. Our high school limit for absences if 18. He has well over this amount. The school is wanting to deny him credit for classes because of the absenteeism. I don't think this is fair because of the high blood sugars. Unfortunately I do not have a doctor's statement to support each occurence of the hyperglycemia. I appreciate any suggestions you many have to help me confront this issue with his school.

Kids take college level classes in high school now with the final test administered by the US College Board. My son took one his freshman year in high school. Avatar m tn He does well when classes are structured and teachers are experienced, has been seen as having "an issue" by young teachers. Most of what this involves seems to be answering questions out of turn, without raising his hand, or talking to his friends. He seems to do much better in public school classrooms (where he has performed successfully in the so-called "gifted and talented" classroom) and in fact his public school teachers have never identified this behavior as abnormal.

Avatar m tn momstar, I have experience with K kids and fully half of them will sit quietly on the carpet for 20 minutes. If we have parent reading time, or art in the classroom, and they are required to gather on the carpet and sit cross legged and pay attention, fully half of the children can do this with no problem whatsoever. They are engaged in the lesson, can answer questions, raise their hands to make comments about the lesson, etc. The other half of the kids - could go either way.

1127960 tn?1264559892 Hi. I'm a teacher too. Off right now from chiari surgery. I agree with Halbashes. If you're taking standardized tests (county/state), you need accommodations drawn up on an official document or you won't get anything. I was wondering if a 504 plan could be drawn up, if it is available, since EDS is a primarily a physical disability. It is more discreet as far as your records go because of HIPAA and usually managed through the guidance counselor.

Avatar f tn Hi Andrea, I agree with the counsellor’s suggestion. The learning trajectory of your daughter is not unusual among high school students. It is possible that her struggles are a result of some mild weakness(es) in processing skills, such as working memory, processing speed or executive function. When the deficits are not pervasive and the student has many strengths, they might not become apparent until high school or even later.
