the odd thing is in a lot of the different kinds of anti-depressant meds is that if you read close enough on the papers they can cause weight gain in some people and weight loose in others so that may be why many don't wven think it is nessesary to mention it at all. I have at least 2 differant papers om Effixor they neithor one say the exact same thing. I was lucky I did not gain weight on that one but i did on a differant med for anxiety.

The topamax did level off and the weight began to pile on (other anti-seizure meds were added that could cause weight gain). I have been off Topamax for approx. 8 months and was wondering if I began to take Topamax again would it help with weight loss or once it has leveled off it will no longer aid in weight loss?
You might find that you will not lose any weight at all on these medications, or you might find you will lose some weight on these medications as I did, or you may find you lose a lot of weight on these medications as the recent forum member who posted did. But, you will NOT find that you gain weight on these medications. Weight gain is NOT a side-effect of either of these medications so you do NOT have to worry about that side-effect at all.

There are many success stories of people losing weight on topamax. If you read the side effects, weight loss is one of them. It helps suppress the desire to eat even smoking which I have quit too. I have had all blood tests ran on me. I've been going to my doctor for 10 years. I like how you just jump to conclusions without doing any research. For anyone else who has any experience using this please write.
topamax is not an atypical antipsychotic rather an off-label anticonvulsant (antiepilepsy) drug to stabilize BP. Strange one of the side effects is anorexia (loss of appetite). The only drug i know which doesn't cause weight gain is lamotrigine. But aside from it all the AC's, lithium, AP's even AD's cause weight gain. In short all BP drugs increase weight. That's a price we pay. I recall once Oprah had a program for BP and all the guests were rather heavy weight persons.
m currently on my second attempt of topamax for about a year now (18-19 years old), was on Topamax previously before but had serious side effects which my doctor said would go away after long term use but i refused to take it and just took otc migraine med, now on my second attempt and my side effects are much more less, no weight loss though more like weight gain, i do still have speech stuttering, and forgetfulness which makes it hard to remember to take my topamax and still have migraines, i
Our son had been recently diagnosed as bipolar and has been given depakote to control mood swings. He has an ongoing weight problem and learning of the potential weight gain side-effect has angered him tremendously. Also the thought of weight gain is a trigger to his anger generally.
What other alternatives are there to depakote that does not tend to promote weight gain? or, better yet, promotes weight loss?
If age matters, he is now 21.
I started taking it in conjunction w/my Gabapentin, in the hopes that I could reduce the amount of Gabapentin I was taking as it was causing me weight gain. The Topamax did work well to control my nerve pain, but about 4-5 months in, my hair started falling out! I researched this & was shocked at the number of ppl this had happened to! And sadly, it appears to be permanent, even after getting off of Topamax. My hair stopped falling out, but what I lost has never grown back.
I am on two anti-depressants Seroquel and Lamictal that both cause weight gain...however my doctor also prescribed Topamax (used as an anti-convulsant....side-effects...dramatic weight loss!!)

I was originally put on Gabapentin and had a quick large amount of weight gain. So they put me on Topamax to reverse the weight gain and for my migraines. It helped my migraines but within about 3 weeks I started having pins and needles sensation in my hands, which quickly started occurring in my feet. Within a week it went from pins and needles to a piercing pain as if being stung by bees and kept getting worse.
I was started on coreg 6.25 two tmes per day. The dr recently reduced me to 3.125 because of weight gain. I am still gaining weight. I decided to stop it altogether and did not tell my dr. My resting pulse is up as well as my pulse rate upon exertion. I just stopped the coreg. Will this regulate itself in a few days.
I can understand the weight gain. I gained 6lbs in 5 days when I increased my dose of risperdal. My psych put me on a med called Metfomin. It's technically for pre-diabetes, but it works by changing how your body uses and stores calories. It might be worth asking you p doc about it or a similar medication. It might mean that you'd be able to stay on your current medications, and stop gaining, and maybe start losing some of the weight.
But now I am off of it and petrified I am going to gain the weight back. My family (who all are obese) are telling me I am going to gain the weight back, but I don't know if it's jealousy because even before the pill i was a healthy weight. I have already gained five pounds but that could be do to my vacation, and not watching what I'm eating. Does anyone know if you gain weight back. Being a female it's important I don't.
The older mood stabelizers almost always have weight gain as a side effect, however, not everyone gains weight on the drugs.
You really won't know until you try and if you see 5 pounds come on, then you can ask your doc to change your meds before you have 20 or 30 pounds to loose. 5 is easy. Good luck, I hope you find the right med the first try!!
Adderal alone reduces appetite big time. But some antidepressants may cause weight gain.
But im concerned, and urge you NOT to take these medications for the sole reason of losing weight, particularly that they are quite hardcore and may cause long term damage.
Just stick to your prescribed dose, eat right, and exercise. I know its easier said than done. But a change if lifestyle makes a world of difference. Find a hobby, mabye a a participation, or team sport you enjoy.
There are even some meds, especially antidepressants, that cause weight loss in some and weight gain in others. I gained weight on most mood stabilizers. The biggest culprits for me were Depakote, Remeron- an antidepressant, and Zyprexa- an antipsychotic.
Now I take Lithobid, which is a slow release lithium. It tends to not cause as many side effects as regular Lithium. I am also on Seroquel. I was finally able to lose all of the weight I gained.
This is my 2nd time on it and I am determined not to gain any weight. Last time I gained 12 pounds, not too bad, but does make you hungry. I've been back on it a month and no weight gain because I eat dinner around 7 pm now instead of 5:30, so I don't have that urge for snacks later, I just go to bed by 10:30, usually. (except tonight, I'm up looking at this site for why I have constant eyelid twitches!).
I am so much more "normal" feeling on the Lyrica.
