i have a pain in my upper right quadrant, it feels like right below my ribs. and when i get this pain it's usually right after eating or especially when its really greasy foods. now i've been having these pains off and on for a while, almost a year. and when it gets too uncomfortable at times, i massage the area, which relieves it alittle, but never completely goes away. when i feel around, i've noticed little lumps, and when i apply pressure, it pains right on the lump.
Besides the liver, the pancreas stretches from the right upper to left upper quadrant and the pain is usually felt deep as your describing. Ask your Dr. to check for pancreatitis. Stomach issues also cause URQ pain such as Gastritis, Peptic Ulcers, and Gastroenteritis. Ask for an H-Pilory breath test to rule that out.
Are there any other symptoms other than pain? Do you experience nausea ? Does it get worse with eating? A little more description will help rule out things.
I too have the same problems. Before treatment and eot everything I went to the dr they said it was a pulled muscle. Had just about everything done and no one knew or could give me an answer to what it was. I'm still clueless as to what is causing it. Maybe things will change after 6 months but who knows.
I am 35 years old and for the last 4 months I have been having Right Upper Quadrant Pain right under my rib. The pain is sharp that has now become constant. It's now causing me difficulty sleeping on my stomach. When I saw my PCP, she felt on physical exam that my liver was enlarged, I had an ultrasound that day, which was negative. I had an endoscopy and colonoscopy which was negative, I have also had a battery of lab tests that were negative.
Hi. I'm 34 year old mother of 2 young children. For the last year, I haven't been able to feel normal. Last September, I was vomiting so I went to the doctor and she ran regular blood work and it showed urobilinogen in my urine (4.0). She did an ultrasound of my gallbladder and liver and it showed no abnormalities. We did urine again a week later and it was down to 0.2.

Seventeen years ago, in my very early 40s, I started having upper right quadrant pain. The gastro doctor did several tests, Scope down the throat, up the rear. This one where I ate these crystals and made my stomach blow up for some imaging.
They did not find anything. They said theres nothing wrong with me, I'm not dying of cancer, go away, we are tired of you. lol.
I ended up on Omniprizole 40mg 2x/day and Bella donna 2x/day.
I have S.O.D. (along with quite a few other digestive illnesses).

I have pain mostly in the middle & left upper quadrant but I also occasionally have stabbing pains in the right upper quadrant as well.
I noticed you asking - so just FYI - I have had an ERCP/Sphincteronomy (with stints) & it helped me. I've went three years with bareable symptoms until now. Recently I've been ill for 2 weeks with an E.R. visit.
Thank you so much for responding . I had a colonoscopy , endoscopy , ct with and without contrast, ultrasounds , and a hida scan. I was literally up all night with horrible pain after trying to take elavil at a low dose for sleep because of excruciating bone pain, ( nit for depression ). It gets really bad during high hormone levels as I said. It's always bad n getting worse. Oh and I also get hiccups when I eat, not sure if that has anything to do with it just mentioned it.
Off and on for a couple of months now I've been having this pain in my upper right quadrant, sometime to the right of my navel, and most times just "under" my ribs on the right side. In June I had an endoscopy which revealed mild esphogitis and mild gastritis, and a hiatal hernia. (At that time it all started witha horrible bloated feeling all the time.) He is still having these pains with black stool,headache and sore throat. what type of test should I request and what could be wrong?
A lot of people say they have right upper quadrant pain with hep c. I started having the pains off and on long before I found out about the hep c. As far as what it means... that's anybody's guess because people with really bad liver problems report that they don't feel that pain, and others with less damage do. I think it is an individual thing.
Have you been tested for genotype and amount of damage yet?
Did your doc ever do any tests to look at the state of your gallbladder? Upper right quadrant pain is often an indication of a gallbladder issue. You may want to ask about doing a GB ultrasound and HIDA scan with CCK injection if the pain truly is in the upper right quadrant. You should also get a blood test that measures your liver enzyme levels and you pancreatic enzyme levels.
GB issues can also result in vomiting and diarrhea.
The pain associated with a rumbling appendix is usually restricted to the lower right abdomen, but sometimes shifts or extends to the upper right abdomen. Rumbling appendicitis can be treated, if diagnosed correctly. If feverish symptoms develop, it is essential that the patient is admitted to hospital immediately."
As we all know, a ruptured appendix can be potentially fatal.

I have been having pain in the right upper quadrant since my gallbladder was removed in November 2005. It is hard for me to lay on my stomach also without pain. But I can have pain without any pressure there also. What could be casing it?. The pain seems to be under the ribs. Past history: uterus out in 2004; kidney stone removal (surgically) in Dec 2005 (about 6 weeks after the gallbladder came out) and then an oopherectomy in Jan 2006.
s often located in the upper right quadrant. You also have the gallbladder and pancreas in the RUQ that can cause severe pain. Kidney stones can sometimes cause pain from that location, a CT scan can be useful to pick them up... If the area in question is pushed on, does it cause more pain? Or when it is let go of?
IBS can cause agonizing pains though, as can gas. The pain can be akin to having a heart attack. If the medicine is helping, it's likely IBS related to a large degree.
