Common Questions and Answers about Steps to overcome fear of heights

fear

Avatar n tn I have developed a fear of heights that has interfered with my ability to enjoy my favorite winter sport...snow skiing. The anxiety produced when confronted with height creates what is near panic. The fear only exhibits itself primarily on the ground and outside.. I do not have a fear of flying in a jet airplane or inside tall buildings. It has become a real problem for me to enjoy skiing.
Avatar f tn org/ptsd-guideline/patients-and-families/exposure-therapy It helps break the patterns of avoidance and fear through slow exposure to the fear. I think it can be a little hard to think about that BUT a well trained psychologist in this type of therapy would know how to guide you and help you. Might be worth considering especially if it is causing panic attacks.
Avatar m tn One of the ways that people do this is by steering clear of the situations that make them anxious. If you have a fear of heights, you might drive three hours out of your way to avoid crossing a tall bridge. Or if the prospect of public speaking leaves your stomach in knots, you might skip your best friend’s wedding in order to avoid giving a toast. Aside from the inconvenience factor, the problem with avoiding your fears is that you never have the chance to overcome them.
Avatar f tn Have you considered a psychiatrist (doctor who specializes in mental health) or a psychologist (talk therapy specialist to discuss and give treatment and strategies to overcome the anxiety loop of thinking)? I don't know what kind of mental health care system exists in your location. Have you looked into what is available? Anxiety IS treatable. You sound like such a nice, thoughtful young man and I would love for you to get some help with this.
Avatar n tn I have had a toothache/facepain for over two weeks, I know I need to go and see a dentist but I have a great fear of going because of cetain circumstances that happened while going to the dentist as a child. Avatar m tn how you would tell your boss and who could step in to do the work at your job while you are absent. The steps you would take sequentially to arrange your private affairs. Steps you would take to do something you had always wanted to do but have never got around to. Think about what you would do if the treatment worked--what special things might you do to celebrate. Then the steps you would take if the treatment was not working, hospice perhaps.
583178 tn?1219071463 t want that fear anymore, than you need to confront it. You need to meet the fear of heights and not run. That's step one. Sure, there will be setbacks. However, keep trying. Eventually, the final step is to submerse yourself (in this case go to the highest point in the world) and just allow yourself to do it. Be with the fear. Allow it to wash over you. Once you surface, you will feel less fear the next time and so on. That's the same thing with anxiety.

Avatar m tn Perhaps you could write a journal entry about your fear and how you took steps to overcome it. We could send people to read it and they would hopefully gain some courage, with your help, in overcoming their own fears. You could help a lot of people. Congratulations! You should be proud of yourself. Do think about writing that journal entry. Pay it forward! Thanks for sharing your success story!

Avatar m tn So my question is, should I attempt to do all these things like I used to enjoy And just get passed the initial fear of being too scared, or should I just steer clear of it all together.
Avatar f tn The first type is beneficial and is to be encouraged. The second type is a detriment and is to be overcome. The first type of fear is fear of the Lord. This type of fear does not necessarily mean to be afraid of something. Rather, it is a reverential awe of God; a reverence for His power and glory. However, it is also a proper respect for His wrath and anger. In other words, the fear of the Lord is a total acknowledgement of all that God is, which comes through knowing Him and His attributes.
Avatar f tn Talk this over with your parents so they can get you therapy to learn how to break free of this fear. Good luck and take care!
Avatar m tn all, i was diagnosed with anxiety and was given xanax which made me very dull and depress. in order to treat depression docs gave me zoloft which triggered fear of harming myself.i used to see images of hurting myself with knife and sometimes other means. therefore, i developed a sharp fear for knives, heights, and guns etc etc..... that was in May of this year. i went cold turkey on all medicines but since then i am very down.
Avatar f tn Perhaps you could try 'chunking' the problem. Name a new food you've not tried but wish you could. Cut up a salt grain sized piece of it, and see if you can talk yourself into trying such a tiny amount. Then try it. No harm? Then congratulate yourself and tomorrow, try a rice grain sized chunk of the food and see if you can talk yourself into trying that small amount. Now, move onto a different new food you wished you could try. Use the same approach.
Avatar m tn Just curious if you eventually had the crowns re-worked? I've had a worsening fear of heights whereas I could climb up a ladder 10 years ago...it's gotten to a point now that I can no longer transition from the ladder to the roof. I've gotten crowns in between that time, and while I doubt it's connected, your comments got me wondering.
Avatar m tn 8 weeks ago I made one of the biggest mistakes of my life and have been overcome with fear, guilt, anxiety, stress, and border line depression. I tested at 6 weeks and 4 days, and it came back negative (4th Generation, from what I understand pretty much conclusive). Anyhow, symptoms mean nothing as I swore I had almost every symptom. Now it's on me to trust in God and forgive myself. Trust the advice givers on this forum, repent for your sins and God will see you through.
Avatar m tn Agreed. But some of these fears can be overcome. Puppies and chicks tend to be fast moving. Find the right kind of puppy at a pound or store, and I bet his response will be different.
Avatar f tn To overcome anxiety, one must understand the logic of why the brain is feeling threatened, it sends messages to the body saying its under threat. New pathways need to be created to overcome the old programming. So for example, if you panic over a fear of flying, you must start flying and let the brain realise that its all okay, and reprogram the thoughts. However, the fear of dying can't really be practiced. Some buddhists meditate in a morgue as it is the closest we can get to dying.
Avatar f tn Another MUST is Mindful Meditation. Learn the steps to do Mindful Medication and it will help cool down your brain. Plenty of exercise and eating right are also things you should do. I will post more helpful things if I come across anything else :) .. Remember, OCD can be healed so start your journey to success!
Avatar f tn Over the past 7 years I have been on Effexor-XR as I became depressed when my only child went overseas and is still there (I have accepted this now), however over that time I have had 4 elderly family members become heavily dependent on me, all with varying degrees of dementia and the stress attached to this affects me every day.
Avatar f tn reading about it dont help it will just heighten your anxiety, the recorded deaths are tragic, but in comparrison to the success rate of themit do put it in to a prospective, just tell your fears to the person who is going to give you the needle ask any questions you need to ask and remember they cannot force you to have anything done that you dont wish to have done.
Avatar n tn Know that millions of us go through this. With that said, this past Saturday, I climbed 3 steps to go to a craft show and went into A-fib. it last hours. I get out of control, close to fainting because of breathing and skips that make me go black for a milisecond. I just got out of my second ablation, which is probably something that will be next for you. This is a simple procedure that they kill the electroytes that are causing this.
Avatar n tn Ok thank you very much! I hope that you are correct! I just don't know how to get rid of this PHOBIA! Perhaps i should take the 8 month test. But i can't get over the fear that i might turn positve and can't force my self to take the test. But i am also afraid if i don't take the test and make sure i am 100% HIV free i might be infected and not knowing about it. I know this is wierd but thats how i feel and i have no idea why.
