Avatar m tn There are actually only 4 stages that are used to describe the advancement of breast cancer. Stage 4 is when the cancer has spread to other organs and/or tissues such as the brain, bone, liver or lungs. It is stated that Stage 4 has a 5 year survival rate of only 16%. Please keep in mind that this varies according to the location of the metastisis. I personally know of survivors of many years with mets to the bone.
Avatar n tn With news like this everyone is scared, and that is fine. Even if you are found to have cancer there are different types of cancer and stages or grades of cancer. A lot of your outcome will depend on the size of the tumor, whether the tumor cells are well differentiated meaning they are slow growing and almost complete in structure or poorly differentiated meaning they are not well organized and grow faster, whether you have positive lymph nodes, perineural invasion, etc.
Avatar f tn My cancer doc is concerned that my high calcium levels are indicators of my cancer spreading into my bones. I am having a bone scan on this Thursday coming up. I am usually an upbeat person, but, with my 3 year anniversary coming up this makes me very nervous. Most people live about this long after finding out they have OVCA. Is it common for this type of cancer to go to the bones. Everything I have read doesn't indicate this... it indicates more organ mets.

Avatar n tn 7 Any of these things can lead to the cause of death. Patients with IPF can die from heart failure, respiratory failure, or collapsed lungs.
Avatar n tn The official stages for breast cancer are Stages 0 through Stage IV, and each stage and subcategory of the stages has clearly defined features. Another breast cancer Website had an article that mentioned Stage V in its title, but not in the article itself. After I pointed out the error to them, they indicated they would make a correction. (They also mentioned that some people "unofficially" talk about Stage V when there is nothing more that can be done except palliative treatment.

8016255 tn?1396293364 My father died of what was told to us of lung cancer, but he had brain cancer, a heart attack, liver cancer, caused by prostate cancer. I'd simply center on keeping the family in comfort unless you think a crime was committed.
Avatar m tn Early stages of HCC usually have no symptoms. Later stages include pain from abdomen to back to shoulder. Weight loss in common, as is server pain, fever and nausea. If you are still worried have your doctor scan your liver for HCC. This is the only true test for HCC.
Avatar f tn I'm living it right now and to be honest, I am aware of 5 to 7 steps or stages of the grief process, but they don't matter, because you survive one day at a time ....baby steps, and not time frame, since everyone heals at their own pace. It's been 2 years for me and I do feel better, but I am not yet completely healed...it takes a long time.
Avatar f tn Cirrhosis is a 6 on the Ishak system that was used to assess the amount of liver damage. It is the final stage of liver disease that can be assessed using a biopsy. There are no "stages of cirrhosis" from on any biopsy scoring method. Only stage 6 on the Ishak and stage 4 on Metavir. Your liver disease was assessed at a 2. You have minimal liver damage at this time. In fact since your liver damage is only beginning you could wait for future treatments if you desired.
Avatar n tn A surprising finding was that a total of fifty-three percent of the patients had thyroid cancer -- many more than the 28% who went into the surgery with a thyroid cancer diagnosis. Even when you exclude the patients who already knew they had thyroid cancer going into the surgery, the prevalence of thyroid cancer in the Hashimoto's patients as still 35.6%.
Avatar f tn I know I am powerless over everything except living well, taking care of my body and knowing that how I look at things (my perspective on illness, death, cancer or even living) affects EVERYTHING. I hope this helps you with this a little bit. Warmly...
Avatar m tn I think the lung cancer may exclude him from consideration for a liver transplant. That would have to be resolved in some fashion before he would be considered and resolution of lung cancer is a very difficult and unlikely course. I agree with Sir_Osis - he stomach could be drained which would provide a lot of relief from discomfort. There are drugs that are used with a patient with ascites and edema - diuretics. Avatar f tn It has also been shown that both stages have different predictors of death (1). Therefore, it was recently determined, by consensus, that compensated and decompensated cirrhosis should be considered separate disease entities (4).
1322157 tn?1279656681 It is like a death - the death of your 'normal' life. And then you go through all the stages or mourning: Denial - this can't be my life, there has to be a cure Anger - Why me??!! (or you have anger towards the doctor, the person driving the car who hit you, etc...) Bargaining - I will do ANYTHING to make it better and the pain go away! Depression - Because you realize this is now your life and there is nothing to fix it.
Avatar f tn Stage 1 is considered a small amount of fibrosis. Stages 2 and 3 is considered a greater amount of fibrosis or scarring meaning the disease has progressed. The more fibrosis the harder it is on the liver to carry out it's functions. As the damage progresses further, many scars can form together, which can lead to stage 4, or cirrhosis.
Avatar f tn There is life after cancer, and there are millions of people who go on to live many many years and decades after cancer treatment. Cancer is not a death sentence. There is always hope, especially if it is found in its early stages, it is when you ignore your symptoms and wait to see the doctor when it becomes more difficult to treat the cancer. It is best to ask these questions of your health care provider, get second opinions if you feel necessary. And then do what you think is best for you.
