Stage iv head and neck cancer prognosis

Common Questions and Answers about Stage iv head and neck cancer prognosis

neck

Avatar f tn His oncologist said that it may or may not be metastasis from the tongue, but it is a stage IV something, prognosis grim (six months, more or less). My question is, well, I guess I have no question. It's just such a hard time. Stage IV is the worst, right? Oncologist said it is metastatic. Does that mean it has spread from tongue, or not necessarily? Looking for some emotional support here. Thank you.
Avatar f tn I don't know what stage she is; did she tell you? It sounds to me like it is stage III or IV. The physician should have discussed this with your mother. Stage IV doesn't necessarily mean terminal but the prognosis is not good. They will probably surgically remove the cancer and give rounds of chemo and hopefully she will respond well to this. She is in for a rough road. It is going to be a "wait and see" situation.
Avatar f tn Hey, that's great news about the reversal in staging. I'm sure that you are exhausted but I'm sure you will be given the strength to fight this battle. I don't think I would even consider wanting to know the odds; I believe that NO ONE knows that type of thing and knowing isn't going to help you in your battle. Just step ahead and face it head-on and don't give up !! We are all concerned and praying for you and will be here to help, listen or whatever at any time.
905378 tn?1244854365 My mom was just diagnosed with probably stage IV. She has ovarian cancer, ascites, omentan caking, and discomfort in her liver. her doctor says the ascites is coming from her liver and that it has probably metastized to her liver already. Ascites and liver discomfort are the main signs, also she cant kick a pnemonia for 6 weeks, 2 rounds of antibiotics. He says could be in her lung too. Im really worried what the prognosis is?
Avatar f tn Non-small cell lung carcinoma staging and Manchester score Prognostic factors in non-small cell lung cancer include presence or absence of pulmonary symptoms, tumor size, cell type (histology), degree of spread (stage) and metastases to multiple lymph nodes, and vascular invasion. For patients with inoperable disease, prognosis is adversely affected by poor performance status and weight loss of more than 10%.
Avatar f tn Three years ago, my sister, age 35 at the time, was diagnosed with breast cancer. When they found it-she too was stage IV. The cancer was in the 22 lymph nodes they biopsy'd, and also in her spine. It quickly spread to her thyroid, ovaries, humerus and eventually to her liver. She lived 3 years after she was diagnosed. (1 year after it spread to the liver.) She did great for the first two years. She fought strong and hard. She only had a hard time for her last 3 months of her life.
Avatar f tn I know everyone is different but is there a prognosis for this type of cancer and stage that has undergone these tx's? I just want to know what to expect and can't find any sites that clearly answer this. Any information that you have would be appreciated. And are there alternative tx's?
Avatar f tn The chart shows that people under the age of 45 that were in that study group had 100% survival rate with Stage I and Stage II papillary cancer. The reason you are in that age group is because all the studies of this type of cancer showed that the older population did not fare as well. BUT be encouraged because ALL the people in your age group with that staging survived!!!! from the American Cancer Society website: http://www.cancer.
Avatar f tn Hi there, My husband, age 57 and in otherwise great health, was diagnosed and had surgery for colon cancer. The diagnosis was stage IV colon cancer, as the mucinous carcinoid tumor had spread to his retroperitoneum. The prognosis is not good (ie., the doctors said that without doubt, this is a terminal disease with survival marked at 3-6 months). But I have been reading of survivors - some living beyond the magic five year milestone! What is the exact prognosis of this?
Avatar n tn I was diagnosed with stage IV clear cell ovarian cancer a year ago. I had major surgery where all cancer that was visible was removed.........only the microscopic cancer remained. I then had six treatments of carboplatin/taxol; six months of monthly maintenance doseage of taxol; two months of Doxil. During that time my CA125 count dramatically reduced from 292 down to 9 during the carboplatin/taxol treatments.
Avatar n tn My husband is 25, and he was diagnosed with IV stage colonrectal cancer october of 2009. It already metastasized to his live in five spots, and they were to spread out to take any of his liver. He went through a 14 hour surgery in January of 2010, and he went through chemo up until this February. They told him he probably had cancer for about three years when they discovered it, and it runs in the family.
Avatar f tn I must preface this with the fact that I have been diagnosed w/ Stage IV endometriosis and about a week before presenting to the ER, I had a "period" approximately 18 days apart from my last period, that lasted about 5 days and primarily was brown, mucous consistency in appearance. They measured the cyst at approx. 2cm and instructed me to f/u w/ my OB-GYN. I did this and had an transvaginal U/S performed today and my Dr.
Avatar f tn This is a difficult post to answer but I will tell you of my experience and knowledge based on my own End-Stage Liver Disease and liver cancer (Hepatocellular Carcinoma). I hope you find it helpful in some way. Whether someone wants to live or die is a personal choice that I would deal with here. Who told him he has liver cancer? Do yo have a copy of the doctor's report? How was he diagnosed? How many tumors does he have and how large are they? What stage of cancer does he have?
Avatar n tn She has a tummer in her stomach now. She first had her cancer in her neck head and Lungs. Well the doctor said there is nothing more they can do for her because she is so frell weak. She had all the radiation she can have to her head, lung and neck. They can't do radiation on her stomach because it is to close to her videl organs. and they can't do chemo because she is to weak. Only 95# She can eat but not the protein stuff like meats. Hospice is stepping in already.
Avatar f tn In my experience, I met a woman who was Stage IV and she had 14 out of 18 lymph nodes positive. She passed her 5 year survival rate. With the help of our surgeon (who lead our support group), trying to stay positive is truly does help. Don't give up...keep fighting. There is a book about cancer and how to tell your children. When you read it to them, it tells them in such a way that they can understand. I will look it up and get back to you.
Avatar f tn Just passed my first year, 12 cycles of carbo and taxol. Met a woman who is stage 1c clear cell and has been off chemo for 3 years now.
Avatar m tn He just completed a series of radiation treatments, and they are going to do an MRI soon to see if it was successful. He has gained weight and his head and face appear swollen. If you are reading this post, please say a prayer for Kamron. Also, any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Avatar f tn These tumors have responded well to chemo treatments (thus, I think her living 4 yrs with stage 4 colon cancer) and the doctors keep saying this is a bump in the road, will not give us a prognosis, and seem determined to get her strong enough to get back on chemo. She has recently lost 50 pounds, is very tire and depressed since she's been in and out of the hospital since July of this year.
Avatar f tn Hello I am a caretaker. My client was diagnose with lung cancer stage IV. It has already spread to the spine, both lungs and the lymph system. Doctors triede Tarceva for 3 weeks but her body had a very bad reaction. For the spine they did radiotherapy. But since she was diagnose 3 months ago she has lost aalmost her voice. she is using oxygen for the major part of the day but doctors don't wan't to talk about time. no more medes will be given and she was reffer to hospice....
Avatar n tn However, only a biopsy of the tumor will confirm presence or absence of cancer. Early stage Head and Neck cancer (including that of the vocal cord) is treatable in a majority of cases with a multi-disciplinary oncology team approach. In rare cases, infection or granuloma may mimic a malignant growth. In your case, there is a strong temporal association between the endarterectomy surgery and appearance of your hoarseness. Also, the doctor "cannot see the tumor".
Avatar n tn Hi. The next thing to do is to look for the organ from where that squamous cell carcinoma might have originated. Primary liver cancers usually present with a histology of adenocarcinoma (not squamous cell carcinoma), so your mom's liver mass must have come from somewhere else. The most likely candidates would be the lungs, the head and neck area, and the uterine cervix. It's important to first determine the organ of origin so that treatment will be more focused.
Avatar n tn My sister had rectal cancer (Stage IV), it had spread to lung and liver. She had radiation and chemo on and off for 2 years. She lived 2 years and 3 months after being diagnosed with metastatic cancer. She just passed May this year. Different people tolerate and respond to different treatments, so no one can say for sure how long anyone has to live. My sister was never told how long she had and she never asked.
Avatar n tn Hi, The prognosis of lung cancer depends on the type of cancer, the stage of cancer, general condition of the patient, and some genetic/mutation characteristics. Staging of the lung cancer depends on many features. First, we need to establish the type of cancer. Lung cancers are essentially divided into "small cell lung cancer" (SCLC) and "non-small cell lung cancer" (NSCLC).
168348 tn?1379357075 Although most forms of thyroid cancer have an excellent prognosis, the word cancer and its connotations is frightening to most people, and fear of the unknown and what lies ahead is not uncommon. A common scenario preceding the initial diagnosis is for the usual patient to be in reasonably good health, not feel sick, and simply have a small thyroid nodule that usually does not cause any symptoms.
