I think there have been some stem cell experiments to regrow cartilage, but I don't know that there have been human trials yet.
Otherwise I don't know of anything that will regrow cartilage. There are injections of a cushioning substance that can be done, however these are only temporary and quite painful to administer. The more active you are, the less time it lasts.
You might try getting a second or even third opinion from different surgeons who are up on the very latest techniques.

Are you referring to the professional level of the sport ? Since there are different organizations which promote the sport of MMA it may be a decision made at the front office of each . When I had a flexion extension mri of the cervical spine I was told my chiari worsened in extension. My symptoms also do as well, so I wasn't surprised by those results. I was only able to see a worsening of my chiari in extension because it was an upright mri, I don't think the way you lay down for a regular mri will make a difference.
