Avatar n tn Hi, Brain injured patients may receive rehabilitation that involves individually tailored treatment programs in the areas of physical therapy, occupational therapy, speech/language therapy, physiatry, psychology, and social support. A complete physical and neurological examination is needed in each treatment program. It would be best to discuss which treatment option is best for you with your doctor for proper evaluation and management. Take care and keep us posted.
Avatar f tn Only thing I have to do is remind him to take his pills. Speech never was affected but he had speech therapy to deal with cognition and swallowing problems. He was fine with a little limp..doesn't really need cane or walker unless we go to the mall or somewhere that requires more walking than what he can tolerate. I hope all goes well for your father. It seems like he's progressing rather well if they're talking about letting him out of the acute rehab center.
Avatar n tn For two weeks she was in intensive care and than she was moved to a nursing/rehabilitation center. The first nursing home was terrible. So we moved after one month. She's been receiving physical therapy since the move. We have noticed some improvements but she remains on a feeding tube although the home has indicated she has had glasses of water and successfully eaten crackers. Her alertness remains non consistent. Its as if she's sleepwalking.
1041487 tn?1256327719 Mom has reached the 3-month mark of her stroke recovery. She is still in a nursing home, doing well with her speech therapy. She is able to slowly lift her neck, and slowly turn her head from the left to the middle. She is alert and talks with slurred speech, since she is still unable to completely control her tongue. She can, however, clearly say "yes, no and hi" On the negative side, she is still unable to move any of her limbs. Her left arm has contracted close to her chest.
Avatar n tn Thank you both! We did get him an appoinment with a specialist outside of the nursing home and we are trying to find a way for the therapy to continue. The home stopped therapy because he "wasn't progressing" yet they refuse to let us have a therapist from outside come in...it's crazy.
Avatar n tn My mother recovered from a stroke that was on her right side, but after a two years of theropy . She started having some sore throat issues that made her sound: when talking, similar to when her stroke happened. We took her to a hospital for test and it came back with high cholesterol, but every thing else negative . They admitted her her and change her meds. she ate supper there that night and breakfast the next morning. They even walked her that morning.
Avatar f tn Limited to medically-necessary part-time or intermittent skilled nursing care, or physical therapy, speech-language pathology, or a continuing need for occupational therapy. A doctor must order your care, and a Medicare-certified home health agency must provide it. Home health services may also include medical social services, part-time or intermittent home health aide services, durable medical equipment (see page 30), and medical supplies for use at home.
667445 tn?1230750538 Yes U should look into speech therapy, but therapy in general...make sure his hearing is ok......there r forms of autisum that can case speech delays...look up aspbergers (sp?).......I hope ur son responds to whichever therapy u choose.
Avatar f tn For most stroke patients, the rehabilitation process includes nursing, occupational therapy (OT), physical therapy (PT), therapeutic recreation (TR) and speech therapy (or speech language therapy, SLP). OT involves exercise and training to help the stroke patient relearn everyday activities, sometimes called the Activities of daily living (ADLs), such as eating and drinking, dressing, bathing, cooking, reading and writing, and toileting.
Avatar m tn Right now they are saying at 50 she has to go to a nursing home. Did your husband go to a nursing home?
Avatar m tn I went to my speech therapy this morning. She had me saying ahhhhhh, ooooh, eeeeh and reading from what looked like a grade second reader. The she made a mistake. She said, "Tell me a little about yourself." Now, being a complete windbag I went into a dissertation that rocked her back on her heels. She kept asking me to take a deep breath as i talked.
193609 tn?1292180293 She said that they do educational speech therapy and that Ashtyn needs Clinical speech therapy. Is there anything that would be as helpful as speech therapy since my insurance wont cover it and the ISD doesn't do the speech therapy that he needs? Ashtyn is very behind in almost all communication skills. I don't know what else to do for him, and no one can help him!
2019247 tn?1329275801 Hospitals want to move patients out once medical care has been stabilized; they are likely to suggest your mother go to a nursing home or rehab facility. Check out your choices and try to get her into one where therapy is at least 2-3 times/day (or 3 hrs/daily); if you're mom was physically active and healthy before her stroke, this level of care should help to facilitate a fuller recovery. Good luck.
Avatar f tn Towards the end of her 2 month stay at the nursing home she began to walk using a walker. However her speech did not return as much as i would like and her cognition is very bad. Now that shes home we attend out patient therapy however there ending our sessions because they feel that theres nothing they can do to hel her. Although we havent quite reached our 4 month mark yet i was wondering does anyone know what kind of time line i should look forward to?

Avatar f tn July 27 will be exactly a year. Lost his speech, use of right arm, had a feeding tube, catheter, and Gall bladder bag for infection. He now has incontinence. He has been in 3 nursing homes so far. Been in and out of the hospital 5 different times. And just today had a seizure. He cries a lot and Refuses to do any therapy.(Which frustrates the crap out of me.) Has anyone out there experienced some similar situations?
Avatar f tn Dear, A stroke recovery, is the process by which patients with disabling strokes undergo treatment to help them return to normal life as much as possible by regaining and relearning the skills of everyday living the rehabilitation process includes nursing, occupational therapy , physical therapy , therapeutic recreation and speech therapy .
Avatar n tn My delemma is that he is making sense now when he talks not good but we can understand him, and he has always asked us not to put him in a nursing home if the time came that he couldnot care for himself----do we ignore his wishes or look for alternative treatment. He is being fed thru the nose at themoment. Be grateful for your help.
Avatar f tn Shes started back up about 2yrs ago after getting her meds right, tons of therapy and counseling, but now she happy as Ive seen her now thats shes nursing again. Im gonna see her later on today and Im sure she'll know the answer to your question, Im not sure if its varies from state to state but I will find out. The main thing is for your mom to get well, whether shes abusing medications or the problem is with her conditions.
Avatar f tn But with a lot of fighting for more therapy he has been home with my mother caring for him along with a little bit of nursing help. He still cannot walk, but is able to transfer to wheelchair, toilet with just a little help. His memory is not very good and sometimes he still talks crazy, but he has come alot farther than anyone had ever hoped. So don't give up, keep fighting for more therapy, It's a long road to recovery...
500419 tn?1220124743 My son had a speech delay they recognized at 18 months after he had tubes put in his ears around the same time. I took him to speech therapy at "Columbus Speech and Hearing." They first did a hearing check to make sure everything was ok. Then autism was another good thing to look into. Their first plan of attach, though, was "early intervention" with speech therapy one day a week for a half hour at "Columbus Speech and Hearing.
Avatar m tn Can anyone tell me what a medicaid patient is entitled to in terms of physical, occupational and speech therapy. My boyfriend at 47 has had his second stroke on January 30, 2013. It is now November and he is still in a nursing home in Long Term Care unit and not receiving ANY rehab. The reason the home gives is that he has "plateaued". People I have spoken to have said that he should still be receiving therapy.
Avatar f tn He currently receives Speech at home (one hour a week) and Speech, OT, and one on one time with a special ed teacher at school. I've always been told that he's very intelligent- He's a great reader for example. I think the Apraxia really trips him up in getting his thoughts to paper. I've actually learned a little more about language processing and I'm planning on starting him in therapy with a psychologist to improve coping skills.
3053649 tn?1356365017 My friends baby had this. Didn't have it clipped n he's a normal 3 year old. They put him in speech therapy but after the first appt the therapist said he didn't need to come back. You can still understand everything he says.
Avatar m tn My father had a stroke in July and at the time he didn't qualify for therapy... he was in a semi vegetative state & required a peg tube. He was discharged to a skilled nursing home & his prognosis was not great. We started the process of applying for Medicaid for long term care which he was approved for. However, my father was a fighter and began to recover quickly!
Avatar m tn she said lets wait for a PEG for 3 more months and lets do some speech therapy before we take that step and hopefully things will be better...
Avatar f tn I have a speech problem and what didn’t help me was everybody reinforcing that I had the problem. That only willed the stronghold and made me believe it more. She’s still young tell her she can speak and when people speak they don’t think about what they are going to say they just speak. And just let her do it if she stutters or anything just wait for her to finish speaking. She’ll get it down and it would help to find out why she turned out that way. My dad made me stutter.
Avatar f tn Is your son receiving speech therapy? I think that is the most important thing for him to improve his language. If he is already getting speech therapy, maybe he needs it more often.
Avatar n tn She will be in a skilled nursing facility for another 6 weeks and then will come home. She is on a double dose of Provigil (modafinil), which seems to have have little effect. She cries out alot and asks for her mother and grandmother, who have passed away. My mother is only 73 and I miss being able to have a conversation with her. I am very saddened and discouraged.
