500419 tn?1220124743 My son had a speech delay they recognized at 18 months after he had tubes put in his ears around the same time. I took him to speech therapy at "Columbus Speech and Hearing." They first did a hearing check to make sure everything was ok. Then autism was another good thing to look into. Their first plan of attach, though, was "early intervention" with speech therapy one day a week for a half hour at "Columbus Speech and Hearing.
Avatar n tn The doctor promoted speech therapy and said there was nothing to worry about. I also took him to a child neurologist for an exam. The neurologist also did not seem to think anything was wrong. He also mentioned speech therapy and time. However the school district evaluated my son with specialists and said that he was possibly autistic. I don't know what to think. I know my son have some problems and is slow but I'm not comfortable with Autism.
Avatar m tn I went to my speech therapy this morning. She had me saying ahhhhhh, ooooh, eeeeh and reading from what looked like a grade second reader. The she made a mistake. She said, "Tell me a little about yourself." Now, being a complete windbag I went into a dissertation that rocked her back on her heels. She kept asking me to take a deep breath as i talked.
193609 tn?1292180293 She said that they do educational speech therapy and that Ashtyn needs Clinical speech therapy. Is there anything that would be as helpful as speech therapy since my insurance wont cover it and the ISD doesn't do the speech therapy that he needs? Ashtyn is very behind in almost all communication skills. I don't know what else to do for him, and no one can help him!
Avatar f tn Btw, getting a birth to three person can help with speech. He should qualify for speech therapy which does not mean he has autism.
Avatar n tn The best way to proceed would be to arrange a comprehensive developmental evaluation, including cognitive, social, emotional, fine and gross motor. Speech/Language and Occupational Therapy (particulally to address sensory integration problems) should be included in the evaluation.
Avatar n tn Hello, my son will be 5 in Nov and I've been reading up alot on Autism lately and I think he may have it. The symptoms he has are speech delay which right now he's in pre k and he recives speech therapy 2x's a week, but also since hes entered pre k his speech is getting alot better, he's always in his own world, he chews on everything you can think of and sometimes i dont even know if he knows hes doing it.
Avatar n tn Potty training has become quite complex in this day and age and made more challenging if a child has certain delays. Given that your daugher has speech delays (Is she in speech therapy) and sensory issues (she would benefit from Occupational Therapy), the potty training is made even more difficult. It sounds like you have tried many positive things--here's a few more: Create a hug basket of "rewards" that sits in a basket near the designated potty.
Avatar f tn She does have a speech delay and has been in speech therapy since 4. She would rather hang with adults than the kids. The teachers had to encourage her to go play with the kids. If one kid just looks at her funny, there went that self confidence things again. I am confused at what to do with her. Is she acting out or is it something else? I spend most my day with her. My poor son thinks I like her more.
Avatar m tn There is no effective treatment for total cure of stammering, though speech therapy techniques précised may provide some relief to the stammerer. However, here is a sincere attempt to solve the mystery of stammering and also to find a cure to be tried by the stammerer himself or herself without interference from others.
Avatar f tn I have never encountered this problem personally but several of my friends had children who stayed silint for no good reason and then suddenly started speaking. Of course he must start speech therapy as already suggested. I don't know if this will help in addition, but when my kids were small, as they were learning new words, I took their hands and placed one on my lips while i repeated a word, and then on my larynx so they could see how the sound was made.
676912 tn?1332812551 He doesn't have speech therapy. He's five years old. He speaks clearly, and has a huge vocabulary, normal for his age. I'm not 100% sure about all of it, but I know it has more to do with his brain and comprehension.
Avatar m tn yes he has been ordered speech therapy and physiotherapy as well. But everybody around me saying that a speech therapy can't help it. It can come back just suddenly, there is no specific and really helpfull treatment for it. thats why i am asking here that what should i do.? i don't have any idea about it. But i will try my level best to recover his speaking power. so please help me if possible. thanks.
Avatar m tn How ever my voice is still hoars. With speech therapy, I improved in making the sound eeee and oooo for almost 18 to 20 seconds but aaaaaa for only 12 seconds where as in the begining all theses were only 4 and 5 seconds. ENT doctor told me that if by speech therepy, it is not cured, I will have to operate-do surgery. However, I do not want to opt for surgery. So if there are any other options for cure, pls help me.
1664949 tn?1303075099 yes he gets speech therapy in school and once a week thru a outside speech therapist. He doesnt really sort them they just have to be in a straight line and facing the same direction. I will check the books out thanks..
Avatar n tn With the exception of lining things up she seems to play appropriately - feeds a doll, stacks blocks, loves to look at books. She began speech therapy and after 5 sessions the speech therapist said she thinks she has characteristics of autism because she lines things up and seems to have a fixation with the buckle on the chair (she likes to snap it shut herself).
Avatar f tn suggested occupational therapy then speech therapy. She said that some kids who have speech delays are showing some Autistic traits that will disappear later on. My husband doesn't want him to start any therapies yet because he said he's still young & he wants to give him a time because he believes that it's not Autism. We enrolled him to a toddler class instead so he can interact with other kids because he's our only child & he doesn't have playmates.
333021 tn?1207759633 ) I started speech therapy for cognitive issues two wks ago . I have all the troubles everyone mentioned above . I also have great difficulty speaking concepts.. or what I'm thinking .. also understanding what has just been said and what I'm looking at (this is the scariest for me) unnerving stuff this is Typing is much easier.. as most of these problems have to do with processing speed. This also affects my movements, walking ,stairs ( mostly going down)...etc.
Avatar n tn My son just turned 3 in July. He is very intelligent and understands what you say to him, can carry out instructions, but he is not talking very well. He says yellow, no, noodles, and truck, but these are the only words I have been able to understand, as when he does speak, he is not clear. I have also noted that he walks with his shoulders hunched forward and that he falls a lot because he does not ever watch where he is going.
Avatar f tn My son was a late talker as well, never put him in speech therapy or anything like that, now he's 5 and won't shut up. Lol!
Avatar f tn Therapists’ first work with patients to create sing-song sentences that can be set to familiar tunes, then work on removing the melody to leave behind a more normal speaking pattern. This kind of therapy is recommended for patients who have no meaningful form of speech, but can understand language and have the patience for therapy sessions. I hope this helps. Take care always and regards.
Avatar n tn And she refused the Birth to 3 speech therapy for him as well. He has made very slow progress compared to my daughter (they are the same age, only 1 week apart). I mentioned the things to her, only because my daughter has and will be going through them, but after that I don't suggest things because I know she gets frustrated because she hears the same things from her family.
342647 tn?1291107933 my son started speaking full words really early but when he would say something that i couldn't understand, i would name off things that sounded similar to what he had said until he finally said yes to one of them i immediatly pronounced it the way it was supposed to be said and he would pronounce it the correct way and run around the house saying it i think maybe because he was proud that he said it right...lol......
Avatar n tn It is possible to provide therapy and make problems worse, so they would want the ENT to review and determine the cause of the hoarseness. Many times a speech pathologist will not make a diagnosis. Speech and language symptoms are often a sign of something else.
Avatar m tn Are speech therapy and occupational therapy available where you live? Are there any programs or classes in which he can be enrolled? Any specialists in the field of child development that he can see? If not, I would read to him A LOT and try to sound out words together, be encouraging over any attempt he makes and don't get upset or disappointed if he can't or won't try to say something. Only positive reinforcement.
727792 tn?1231227009 I have a sister who just had some serious language processing disorder issues (she does not have autism) and I remember she was very frustrated growing up until she started getting speech and language therapy. She started speech therapy when she was 4 1/2. But by the time she was in 5th grade you would never have known she had any language problems and got straight As in high school and college.
Avatar n tn One possibility - developmental apraxia of speech - I might suggest you google this phrase and see if the information remind you of your child. If so, I urge you to seek help immediately - start with your family doctor or pediatrician. This disorder has an excellent prognosis but early intervention/treatment/speech therapy is critical for children (and 22 months is not too young). I wish you the best ...
