Avatar f tn I have a speech problem and what didn’t help me was everybody reinforcing that I had the problem. That only willed the stronghold and made me believe it more. She’s still young tell her she can speak and when people speak they don’t think about what they are going to say they just speak. And just let her do it if she stutters or anything just wait for her to finish speaking. She’ll get it down and it would help to find out why she turned out that way. My dad made me stutter.
Avatar f tn d want someone to rule out the possibilities. Speech therapy can help in more ways think you would think, and would be of no cost if he is in public schools.
Avatar f tn Shes three years old and is in earlie intervention.she took speech therapy before starting this program. I really dont see any improvement.
Avatar f tn Yes speech therapy is the way to go, perhaps get her a therapist that isnt school related .Have you spoken to her pediatrician about it ?
Avatar m tn Are speech therapy and occupational therapy available where you live? Are there any programs or classes in which he can be enrolled? Any specialists in the field of child development that he can see? If not, I would read to him A LOT and try to sound out words together, be encouraging over any attempt he makes and don't get upset or disappointed if he can't or won't try to say something. Only positive reinforcement.
Avatar m tn I went to my speech therapy this morning. She had me saying ahhhhhh, ooooh, eeeeh and reading from what looked like a grade second reader. The she made a mistake. She said, "Tell me a little about yourself." Now, being a complete windbag I went into a dissertation that rocked her back on her heels. She kept asking me to take a deep breath as i talked.
193609 tn?1292180293 She said that they do educational speech therapy and that Ashtyn needs Clinical speech therapy. Is there anything that would be as helpful as speech therapy since my insurance wont cover it and the ISD doesn't do the speech therapy that he needs? Ashtyn is very behind in almost all communication skills. I don't know what else to do for him, and no one can help him!
Avatar f tn in Texas schools you cannot even enroll them in school without legal guardianship- I mean if they get thru the front door and the office finds out- they will be sent home the same day,,,,, so these sorts of problems don't become issues- she needs to be evaluated- Could her mother come to the school to ask for the evaluation- Sometimes schools refuse intervention til after kindergarten- sometimes 2nd grade- I don't agree with it but that's the way it is sometimes, although speech the
473493 tn?1236836912 Services can be provided by early intervention or the public schools in your area. You may want to look for behaviorally trained professionals to supervise a treatment program by checking www.bacb.com for a person in your area.
Avatar f tn By kindergarten, all kids in the US are screened for speech in the public schools. If you are concerned, you could call your doctor and be referred for a speech evaluation or go through an evaluation through your local school system now that he is three. My older son was evaluated for speech concerns at almost 4 and the speech pathologist concluded he would self correct as his articulation issues were all within normal for his age group.
Avatar n tn As well as a diagnosis meaning that relevant therapies and approaches are used, it may also enable you to get an Educational Statement for your child through the LEA, and that will also give your daughter access to special educational places in Enhanced Resource Schools. These are schools that have classes with a mixture of mainstream and special needs children (usually those with Aspergers and High Functioning Autism).
688450 tn?1259468734 Also, be prepared to keep your kids out of school for several days at a time - the schools here require that unvaccinated children be kept home when certain illnesses are present in the schools. Good luck - this is a hard road for anyone!
Avatar n tn I don't believe speech therapy is necessary for him, he may just be a quieter type of child who takes in alot from his environment, which isn't such a bad thing. For now, just do as you would normally and keep communicating with him. Encourage him to communicate with others aswell, which i'm sure you already do. I myself was a real quiet kid and wouldn't speak to anyone and was extremely shy, i just wanted to do my own thing and was happy to do so.
Avatar n tn He turned 2 in October. Since then, we have him in speech 3x week (1 hr session). Occupational therapy 1x week, and Applied Behavioral Analysis 15 hours a week. He is on the GFCF diet, takes supplements, vit b12 injections etc.. We have run labs on him as well. Currently, he still runs in circles flapping his hands, climbs constantly on our table and chairs, has to close one door in house, turn on a certain light and does other non-typical behaviors. Do these kids improve?
Avatar f tn I dont know if this is because of his speech or laziness. In social situations, he plunges ahead, not even really thinking about what to say or do. If he feels he is not getting attention he will act up. He is very sensitive to loud noises. He doesnt even like it when I run the vacume cleaner. He also fidgets a lot. I suspect he does have a learning problem besides speech. I have to wait untill hes 6, then the school will test him. I suspect adhd.
Avatar n tn Your local public school system must also evaluate him (free) and then provide services for him. Whether it is just speech therapy or early intervention preschool and occupational therapy. Communication takes a lot to make it happen. As far as sensory, the first time I looked, I didn't think it fit. But it has so many little things with it and polar opposites of kids can still have sensory----- it is hard to tell when they are so little. When my son was 4, it was much clearer.
Avatar m tn Aggressive behavior and delayed speech patterns are common symptoms of autism. Also, consider enrolling your son in a speech therapy program. The sooner you get him started on speech therapy, the better will be the outcome. Check this: http://www.khovnanianchildrenshospital.com/KHCH/services/pediatric_rehabilitation/Our-Speech-Therapy-Program.
972758 tn?1253099564 If not, please contact your school system and have her assessed to get into speech, occupational, and possibly physical therapy ASAP (some districts offer developmental preschool), and they can possibly tell you if there is a specialist doctor who can do an assessment for autism. Some schools make their own diagnosis. You don't need a diagnosis to get the therapy, though.
Avatar m tn My husband didn't say a word until he was 24 months. his first words were all numbers. He didnt' say mama or dada until after age 3. Although delayed in speech, he took off quite quickly on speaking and was reading at age 3. He didnt' have any early intervention because back in the 1970s, there just wasn't until you were like 4. My brother also didn't say anything until he was after age 2.
Avatar f tn My 4 yr old son is receiving speech therapy at his pre-school. He has good eye-contact, follow 2 sentenct instructions (like go down in the basement and shut the light off and close the door), likes to ready story books, plays with his elder brother has good memory, knows rhymes, count numbers, letters, knows colors and shapes. There are few things about him which are making me worried.
709940 tn?1231900307 This means that your son should receive 20 hours of direct teaching in language, social skills and self-help skills. Services can be provided by early intervention or the public schools in your area. You may want to look for behaviorally trained professionals to supervise a treatment program by checking www.bacb.com for a person in your area.
Avatar m tn Another thing I wanted to add, is if you can't get services provided in your country for speech, start teaching your child sign language. There are lots of videos and books out there. Even if you can get services, if you start teaching him sign language now, it'll get him started. I think the idea is to aim for a word per week, or at least until they get the idea. Some kids take longer than others. My daughter learned quickly, but she was 25 months when she started learning.
Avatar n tn Hi, Brain injured patients may receive rehabilitation that involves individually tailored treatment programs in the areas of physical therapy, occupational therapy, speech/language therapy, physiatry, psychology, and social support. A complete physical and neurological examination is needed in each treatment program. It would be best to discuss which treatment option is best for you with your doctor for proper evaluation and management. Take care and keep us posted.
