speech

Avatar n tn She was assessed by early intervention (psychologist, speech therapist, and occupational therapist) and her pediatrician for autism and no one had any concerns. The speech therapist said she should be evaluated by a neuropsychologist. This is a very expensive assessment. Given the fact that she has been evaluated a couple of times do you think this is necessary? I am so frustrated, I have been trying to get her speech help for so long and have jumped through so many hoops.
Avatar m tn This by the way, had to do with my doctor who thought that seeing as I have asthma I should learn how to breathe so I could talk. Unfortunately for the speech therapist, she was caught unawares and might possibly need some kind of therapy herself after having a couple of stints with me.
Avatar n tn She's still a bit young to be worried. I don't think you can really know whether there is a problem until the child is 3. She could have a speech delay. If that's the case she should a speech therapist.
584252 tn?1218223686 Hi i took my daughter Melissa to see a speech and language therapist today and she said from the little test she did her speech is within normal parameters, but from what i have been saying she did say she wanted to test her at school to check her understanding. She did notice that Melissa went into her own world and that when i spoke to her i had to repeat myself quite a few times.
Avatar f tn Hi my sister-n-law had triplets and then another set of twins. All premie's and all with delayed speech. By age 2 they all had a speech therapist work with them because of weak mouth/tongue. Within a short period of time they all had advanced in their language skills. The therapist said with some mouth exercises they have really caught up. They are now 6 and 3 yrs old.
Avatar f tn I am being set up to see a speech therapist in the near future and will let you know how much it helps!
620048 tn?1358018235 00. I am not sure what she is going to do but I am sure I need it..What do speech therapists do anyway? With all of that, I still have a terrible headache but still happy...
Avatar n tn Whatever, I went to see three ENT’s and each of them gave me a different opinion, however one thing in common was said is to go see a speech therapist, the problem is that I think that a speech therapist may be useless for my case because I exercised my voice so many times in singing and it relapsed again and again so whatever can a speech therapist do with his a, o, i... For more details, here is a stroboscopy that shows the catastrophic movement of my vocal cords: https://vimeo.
Avatar f tn XXXX will receive a minimum of 6 hours direct Speech and Language Therapy each term from a fully qualified and experienced Speech and Language Therapist, reviewed in line with the SEN Annual Review process. This equates to approximately twelve 30 minute sessions per term to be delivered weekly or as agreed with Yiannis’ parents and school staff in order to best meet Yiannis’ changing needs.
Avatar n tn Indeed the higher the cognitive level of the child the more appropriate it is and in some circumstances it can fool professionals into thinking that they have advanced verbal skills. An experienced Speech and Language Therapist who has experience of autistic spectrum disorders as well as speech impairments should be able to assess his speech and communication and social interaction skills. Out of interest, also google Semantic Pragmatic Speech Disorder to see if that is relevant.
Avatar m tn Speech disorder will be recovered easily , when they are constant efforts from both patient and Therapist. Normally Breathing exercises and Speech training by therapist will be helpful.
Avatar f tn This is something to speak to his pediatrician about and get a referral to an occupational therapist and speech therapist. They can help work with him to get past some of the sensory problems. Also, I promise you he does feel emotion. I know it doesn't seem like he does, but people with autism do have strong emotions and feelings as they are people too. Has he been diagnosed with autism?
1493284 tn?1294875712 m swallowing problems according to the speech therapist is neurological in nature so the last neuro just shrugged it off but my new neuro is taking it seriously and we are trying to finally come to a diagnosis we are waiting for new mri in a few more months but she thinks its spms but least it will finally take me out of limboland for 6 years
Avatar m tn I wanted to take him to a speech therapist but the drs insisted that I take him to a neuro pediatric. She classified him as very mild autistic in the 30 minutes she saw him. The reasons where: 1- He flapped his hands a bit 2- She gave him a car. He played with it normally on the floor but when he gave it to her, he turned it around and spun the wheel like once or twice. 3- He wanted the car back and when she didnt give it to him, he threw himself on the floor and started crying.
Avatar n tn She diagnosed me with VCD and suggested I see a speech therapist. She said it will likely go away on its own. Others she has seen with the same problem - there symptoms went away within a year. I then began to see a speech therapist in March 2011. She had me doing breathing exercises for two months. This gave me something to do and kept me from getting anxious about not being able to breathe (which makes it worse) but it did not help.
Avatar f tn if it would ease your mind you can ask your pedi to refer you to a speech therapist to have him evaluated but that would be more to appease hubby because every child develops on their time not anyone else
Avatar n tn He didnt babble much as a baby, and not very much as a toddler, so at 2 years old I took him to a speech therapist...........now he is 4 and a half and the speech therapist just noticed that at the back of his throat his uvula is doubled, and she felt the back the top of the roof of his mouth and told me he has Submoucus Cleft Palate. We since have seen a nose ear and throat specialist and he says that my son doesnt need surgery, and should out grow his nasily sound by puberty.
Avatar n tn Has a Speech Therapist assessed his receptive speech? She would also need to assess his auditory memory skills, auditory processing, semantics and pragmatics, comprehension, inference etc. If you cannot process auditory information fast enough you are not going to be able to follow speech or classroom instructions. It will also impact on social interaction.
Avatar n tn t want to, and when he gets upset about the most minor thing, he screams and cries and rolls around on the floor. For example, the other day he got graham crackers out of the pantry, and, in an encouraging voice, I said, "Say 'cracker'," and he threw the box at me and screamed and rolled around on the floor for several minutes. I try reading books to him and he doesn't have the attention span to finish even a very short one.
Avatar n tn If he had problems with receptive language, for example--- (this is the part of speech in which allows a child to understand what is going on) and the speech therapist is addressing it, this could help with his progression and learning very much. It is great the way he plays as that is how a child should play. An autistic child anywhere on the spectrum has trouble playing usually especially with pretend play. Also that he has eye contact is great.
Avatar f tn I'm a 32 yr old female and as far as I know completely healthy. The past few months I've been having issues talking, in my head I know exactly what I want to say but then I say it and it all screwed up. For example words will be mixed up, instead of saying "My hat is in the car." I'll say "My car is in the hat."....thats just an example but this seems to be happening more and more and I'm wondering maybe something could be wrong. Any info will be appreciated.
Avatar m tn They will often ask some very GENERAL questions about why you want to see a therapist, nothing personal, just to get an idea of what kind of therapist they should recommend..........for example, if you are having anxiety issues, they would recommend a therapist who deals with anxiety, if you've been abused, they would recommend a different therapist. And there's always the "let your fingers do the walking" method which I don't recommend.
738090 tn?1250622476 I have been sent to a speech therapist after I started having hoarseness. I have emphysema, acid reflux and the signs of essential tremor. The internist, pulmonologist, gastroentrologist and Ent all could not determine the cause. The speech therapist says is is because the muscle around the vocal cord has been retrained by using the PLB method and I have to relearn to work the breathing and speech in concert.
Avatar f tn I dont' think you would get evealuated by CPS just by having him in the school unless someone reports you or something about your child, etc (bruises, etc). Was he held back, you metion he's in Pre-K and he's seven. Was he speech delayed? My son is speech delays and sometimes we've had trouble getting him to use his words. No one can force you to have him evaluated. You might start by going to see a therapist to see if they have any suggestions.
616452 tn?1253877644 s social interaction difficulties are caused by, and then the Speech and Language Therapist and Educational Psychologist should put together a programme and structure for school. For example, my son cannot find the words to interact socially. So the SALT will teach him learnt phrases to say to children as conversation openers. He also wanted to re-enact things alot, and couldn't organise himself in time for playtime.
Avatar f tn It is all exercises for the mouth. But a speech therapist can help you the best with this. My son had trouble chewing and speech therapists and occupational therapists can help with that as well. So, I can't say for sure what is going on with your son. You've seen a specialist that says possible autism. I'm just a mom on the internet so I don't want to discount that. I'd take any steps that they've recommended.
Avatar f tn I would have her evaluated by a developmental pediatrician or an occupational therapist. This could be speech related but speech also plays into other neurological issues. There are three parts of speech that all have to work. First, there is receptive, that she has to take in what is said to her and organize it so she can understand it, comprehend. The next part of speech is expressive speech.
